    New root endophytic water borne conidial fungi from Kumaun Himalaya

    Water borne conidial fungi occurring in living roots of healthy plant growing in the wet and ravine areas of Dogaon and Ramgarh, Nainital, Kumaun Himalaya (India) were isolated as root endophytes. A total of 15 species (Alatospora acuminata, Anguillospora longissima, Beltrania rhombica, Campylospora chaetocladia, Claviriopsis aquatica, Cylindrocarpon aquaticum, Flagellospora penicilloides, Helicomyces roseus, Helicosporium lumbricoides, Pleurophragmium sonum, Pestalotiopsis submersus, Seridium sp, Setosynnema isthomosporum, Tetrachaetum elegans and Tetracladium marchalianum) of endophytic aquatic fungus were recovered as root endophytes of various host plants. Three species viz. Helicosporium lumbricoides, Pleurophragmium sonum and Setosynnema isthomosporum isolated from the roots of pteridophytes and grasses were found as new root endophytes. Among the studied host plants five plant species were also found as new hosts

    Balanced Allocations and Double Hashing

    Double hashing has recently found more common usage in schemes that use multiple hash functions. In double hashing, for an item xx, one generates two hash values f(x)f(x) and g(x)g(x), and then uses combinations (f(x)+kg(x)) mod n(f(x) +k g(x)) \bmod n for k=0,1,2,...k=0,1,2,... to generate multiple hash values from the initial two. We first perform an empirical study showing that, surprisingly, the performance difference between double hashing and fully random hashing appears negligible in the standard balanced allocation paradigm, where each item is placed in the least loaded of dd choices, as well as several related variants.     Prospective study of ovarian function in hysterectomised females

    Background: Hysterectomy is one of the most common operations performed in the world. The aim of this study was to determine prospectively the influence of hysterectomy on ovarian function by measuring gonadotrophin levels and studying ovarian doppler over a two-year period.Methods: Authors conducted a prospective cohort study at the department of obstetrics and gynecology in study tertiary care center. The study was carried out over a period of two years November 2012-November 2014. Serum FSH, ovarian PI and questionnaire data were obtained at baseline and at 6 and 12 months postoperatively.Results: There was significant difference in the mean FSH and mean PI at follow-up visits of 6 and 12 months. Patient characteristics did not contribute to the changes that were observed during the follow-up.Conclusions: Authors conclude that hysterectomy affects ovarian function by affecting blood supply (reducing blood supply). This is reflected by increased FSH levels and increased PI values on ovarian Doppler

    Within the context of infinite-dimensional representations of the rotation group the Dirac monopole problem is studied in details. Irreducible infinite-dimensional representations, being realized in the indefinite metric Hilbert space, are given by linear unbounded operators in infinite-dimensional topological spaces, supplied with a weak topology and associated weak convergence. We argue that an arbitrary magnetic charge is allowed, and the Dirac quantization condition can be replaced by a generalized quantization rule yielding a new quantum number, the so-called topological spin, which is related to the weight of the Dirac string.Comment: JHEP style.     Field experiment was conducted to study the population dynamics of potential bioagents of mustard aphids on 9 different cultivars which included: Brassica alba cv. PSB-I, Eruca sativa Mill cv. T-27, Brassica campestriscv. BSH-I, Brassica napuscv. Sheetal, B. carinataBraun cv. CCN-06- 1, B. junceaL. cv. Varuna, B. nigraKoch. cv. PBR-I, Brassica campestriscv.YST-151 and Brassica campestriscv. PT-30. Population of aphid and natural enemies was recorded at weekly intervals. The results indicated that the first appearance of coccinellids and syrphids has been observed during 4th standard week, which gradually build up population and attained peak during 9th (pooled mean 1.42 coccinellids/ plant and 0.122 syrphid larva/plant) and 8th standard week (pooled mean 3.96 coccinellids/plant and 0.228 syrphid larva/plant) in 2008-09 and 2009-10 respectively, followed by a declining trend in the following weeks. Similarly first appearance of parasi-tization has been found to occur from 4th standard week followed by a gradual increase in the following weeks with maximum parasitization on PT-30 (33.32%) and BSH-1 (35.25%) during 2008-09 and 2009-10 respectively. Correlation between abiotic factors and these natural enemies was also studied. It has been observed that with the increase of aphid population the population of natural enemies also increased. The population dynamics of mustard aphids and its natural enemies var-ied according to climatic situations and between host plant species. So by computing population trends of both natu-ral enemies and aphids with meterological records would generate information on relative abundance and would certainly help in formulating sound pest management strategies against mustard aphid

    Biology and feeding potential of Coccinella septempunctata (Linn.) against Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt) at different temperature regimes

    Biology and feeding potential of Coccinella septempunctata (Linn.) were studied in laboratory on 3rd instar nymphs of mustard aphid (Lipaphis erysimi Kalt.) at two different temperature regimes. At 30± 20C, fecundity, oviposition period, hatchability of eggs, male and female longevity (232±70.46, 12.8±3.91, 82.87±6.66, 22.70 ± 2.21and 26.60 ± 4.45, respectively) were higher and incubation period, pre-oviposition period, total grub duration and pupal duration (2.6±0.51, 6.5±3.53, 8.7 ± 1.63 and 5.1 ± 1.10, respectively) were lesser in comparison to 25± 20C where fecundity, oviposition period, hatchability of eggs, male and female longevity, incubation period, preoviposition period, total grub duration and pupal duration were 169.8±61.12, 7.9±1.37, 71.68±4.08, 16.2 ± 1.31 and 21.50 ± 1.95, 2.9±0.73, 7.7±2.49, 11.1 ± 1.52 and 5.8 ± 0.918, respectively . At 27± 2 0C, total mustard aphid consumption by a grub of C. septempunctata during the whole life span, was 424.4±2.78 mustard aphids in comparison to 272.64±1.79 mustard aphid at 23± 20C. Similarly an adult male and female consumed 103.2±1.52 and 116.6 ±1.46 aphids per day respectively at 27± 2 0C in comparison to 65.6 ± 1.02 and 71.8 ± 1.60 at 23± 20C. Thus, at both temperatures aphid consumption increased gradually till 4th instar and 30±20C was found to be most suitable temperature as compared to 25±20C for the life history of C. septempunctata. Hence, it could be concluded that C. septempunctata might play a suitable role in biointensive Integrated Pest Management programme because of better longevity and high predatory potential against the mustard aphid

    Prevalence of hypothyroidism in type 2 diabetic adult Indian females and its correlation with age, HbA1c, BMI and duration of diabetes

    Background: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus are more prone to thyroid disorders. Hypothyroidism in them leads to an aggravation of microvascular complications. Screening for thyroid dysfunction in diabetic patients will allow early treatment of hypothyroidism. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of hypothyroidism in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and its correlation with age, HbA1c, BMI and duration of diabetes. Methods: This was a cross sectional study that was conducted at department of medicine GSVM medical college, Kanpur. 200 female patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus attending the outpatient department without any prior history of thyroid disease, chronic liver disease or acute illness were recruited for the study. Results: Our study describes 14% prevalence of hypothyroidism (subclinical hypothyroidism 13.5%) among 200 diabetic subjects. Hypothyroidism was more common in older age group maximum seen in age group 70-79 years (66.7%). Hypothyroidism was more common in subjects having diabetes for a longer duration; maximum seen in 25-30 years group (40%). No correlation was found between BMI and hypothyroidism. Conclusions: The prevalence of hypothyroidism was 14% among female patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in this study. Overt hypothyroidism was 0.5 % and subclinical hypothyroidism was more common (13.5%) among the study subjects. Hypothyroidism was more common in older age group. and in subjects having diabetes for longer duration. No corelation was found between prevalence of hypothyroidism and body mass index (BMI)

    Development and quality of apple -whey based herbal functional ready-to-serve beverage

    Apple is one of the widely consumed fruits which constitute an important part of the human diet as a source of sugars and dietary fibres. But, it is poor in proteins and some minerals like calcium. On the other hand, whey- a by-product of dairy industry is an excellent source of proteins and calcium. Therefore, in the present study, apple-whey based functional ready-to-serve (RTS) beverage was developed by blending apple juice with whey and jaljeera extract and was evaluated for quality under ambient and refrigerated conditions during storage. The incorporation of whey had increased the calcium content from 3.96 to 15.64 mg/100 mL and total proteins from 0.07 to 0.29 % in the developed beverage. Further addition of jaljeera extract not only enhanced the sensory quality of the beverage, but also improved the ascorbic acid content (10.57 mg/100g) total phenols (37.86 mg/100g) and antioxidant activity (40.34 %). The developed product was stored safely for a period of sixty days under refrigerated storage conditions with minimum changes in chemical and sensory attributes

    This research was aimed to test the effect of local own source revenue (PAD), general allocation fund, special allocation of fund, revenue-sharing fund, other legitimate income as the determinants to the level of local financial independence in South Sumatra. Data was obtained from the budget realization report from 2013-2014. Determination of samples was 17 local governments in South Sumatra. The data were secondary data obtained from Central Agency on Statistics (BPS). The results showed that PAD had significant positive effect on the level of local financial independence. The general allocation fund, revenue-sharing fund, and other legitimate income had significant negative effect on the level of local financial independence. The special allocation fund got the negative effect but not significant on the level of local financial independence
