    Digital and experimental rock analysis of proppant injection into naturally fractured coal

    Proppant-laden fluid injection has been applied to many low permeability reservoirs, such as coal seams, to enhance permeability and thus production. While there are several laboratory-scale experimental studies on proppant placement in hydraulic fractures, the possible infiltration of proppant into natural fractures and its effect on overall permeability has received little attention. We study proppant injection into a naturally fractured coal sample by a combination of experimental and digital rock technologies. The sample was imaged using a helical X-ray computed tomography (micro-CT) scanner in as-received condition. Then, proppants of different size ranges were gradually injected into the sample, using a purpose-built X-ray transparent core flooding system, and the permeability was measured at different effective stresses. Subsequently, the propped sample was re-imaged and registered to the as-received image to map the internal changes. The experimental results indicated almost no permeability change of the sample after proppant injection. While proppant collection in the outlet proved passage of the proppant through the sample, observation of the sample indicated that some of the proppants were accumulated on the inlet face of the core and created a filter leading to no permeability increment. Micro-CT images confirmed that proppants were effectively placed in the sample and kept the fractures open. Numerical computation of permeability, using the digital coal sample in which accumulated proppants at the coal surface were excluded, indicated a significant increase in the sample permeability. Such an increase resulted from the opening of the fractures, particularly in the outlet region. This demonstrated the significance of proppant size selection for coal seam hydraulic fracturing. While proppants were successfully placed in the fractures, the experiment measured the permeability of the system, including proppants accumulated on the inlet, and could not effectively map the internal changes. This, therefore, needs to be considered when an experimental program for proppant injection is executed. To accurately monitor the internal changes, application of digital rock technology is recommended for such experiments

    Coronaviruses Detected in Brazilian Wild Birds Reveal Close Evolutionary Relationships with Beta- and Deltacoronaviruses Isolated From Mammals

    This study showed that the most of the coronaviruses (CoVs) detected in Brazilian wild birds clustered with the mouse hepatitis virus A59 strain, belonging to the BetaCoV group. Furthermore, CoV detected in two different bird species, Amazona vinacea and Brotogeris tirica, clustered with a CoV isolated from Sparrow (SpaCoV HKU17) belonging to a monophyletic group related with the CoVs isolated from swines (PorCoV HKU15), both belonging to the DeltaCoV genus, previously unreported in South America. Considering the risk of inter-species host switching and further adaptation to new hosts, detection in bird species of CoVs closely related to mammal CoVs should warn for the potential emergence of new threatening viruses.Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (Grants 2013/03922-6 and 2011/50919-5

    A otimização do manejo de milho consorciado com braquiária depende da fertilidade do solo, da densidade de plantas de braquiária e do arranjo de plantas do milho. Avaliaram-se as interações desses fatores e sua influência na produtividade de grãos e da pastagem, em experimento conduzido por duas safras, num fatorial 2x2x3+1, combinando-se duas condições de adubação do milho (para produtividade de 6 ou > 10 t ha-1 de grãos), densidade média ou alta de braquiária ( 30 plantas m-2), três arranjos de plantas de milho (A = 90 cm entre linhas, 5 plantas m-1; B = 45 cm entre linhas, 2,5 plantas m-1; e C = 45 cm entre linhas, 3 plantas m-1) e um tratamento adicional (maior adubação, sem braquiária e arranjo A do milho). A disponibilidade hídrica influenciou as respostas aos tratamentos. Em ano chuvoso, maior adubação resultou em expressivo incremento da produtividade de grãos, independentemente do arranjo de plantas de milho e da presença de braquiária. Em ano com veranico, o ganho do milho, devido à adubação, foi menor e houve efeito prejudicial da maior densidade de braquiária. A produção de matéria seca pela braquiária não apresentou relação direta com a variação na densidade de plantas

    On-the-fly Uniformization of Time-Inhomogeneous Infinite Markov Population Models

    This paper presents an on-the-fly uniformization technique for the analysis of time-inhomogeneous Markov population models. This technique is applicable to models with infinite state spaces and unbounded rates, which are, for instance, encountered in the realm of biochemical reaction networks. To deal with the infinite state space, we dynamically maintain a finite subset of the states where most of the probability mass is located. This approach yields an underapproximation of the original, infinite system. We present experimental results to show the applicability of our technique

    Second order analysis of geometric functionals of Boolean models

    This paper presents asymptotic covariance formulae and central limit theorems for geometric functionals, including volume, surface area, and all Minkowski functionals and translation invariant Minkowski tensors as prominent examples, of stationary Boolean models. Special focus is put on the anisotropic case. In the (anisotropic) example of aligned rectangles, we provide explicit analytic formulae and compare them with simulation results.     Bayesian extreme value analysis of extreme sea levels along the German Baltic coast using historical information

    Developed coastlines require considerable investments into coastal protection measures to mitigate the effects of flooding caused by extreme sea levels (ESLs). To maximize the effectiveness of these measures, accurate estimates of the underlying hazard are needed. These estimates are typically determined by performing extreme value analysis on a sample of events taken from tide-gauge observations. However, such records are often limited in duration, and the resulting estimates may be highly uncertain. Furthermore, short records make it difficult to assess whether exceptionally large events within the record are appropriate for analysis or should be disregarded as outliers. In this study, we explore how historical information can be used to address both of these issues for the case of the German Baltic coast. We apply a Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo approach to assess ESLs using both systematic tide-gauge observations and historical information at seven locations. Apart from the benefits provided by incorporating historical information in extreme value analysis, which include reduced estimate uncertainties and the reclassification of outliers into useful samples, we find that the current tide-gauge records in the region alone are insufficient for providing accurate estimates of ESLs for the planning of coastal protection. We find long-range dependence in the series of ESLs at the site of Travemünde, which suggests the presence of some long-term variability affecting events in the region. We show that ESL activity over the full period of systematic observation has been relatively low. Consequently, analyses which consider only these data are prone to underestimations.</p

    Prevalence Of Newcastle Disease Virus In Broiler Chickens (gallus Gallus) In Brazil.

    This study was carried out during 2002/2003, aiming to determine the prevalence of virulent Newcastle disease virus strains (NDV) in Brazilian commercial poultry farms. Clinical samples were obtained from the Southeastern, Southern and Central-Western regions, which comprise the main area of the Brazilian poultry production. Serum samples and tracheal and cloacal swabs of 23,745 broiler chickens from 1,583 flocks, including both vaccinated chickens and those with no vaccination information, were tested for NDV using a diagnostic ELISA kit. The seropositivity was 39.1%, and the isolation percentage by flock varied from 1.0 to 7.6%, and by region from 6.5 to 58.4%. Higher isolation rates (74.3-83.3%) were obtained after three passages in embryonated chicken eggs. All isolates preliminarily identified as NDV were characterized as nonpathogenic strains, as their Intracerebral Pathogenicity Index (ICPI) was below 0.7.
