Proposed method for laser spectroscopy of pionic helium atoms to determine the charged-pion mass
Metastable pionic helium () is a three-body atom composed of a
helium nucleus, an electron occupying the ground state, and a negatively
charged pion in a Rydberg state with principal- and orbital angular
momentum quantum numbers of . We calculate the
spin-independent energies of the and
isotopes in the region --19. These include relativistic and quantum
electrodynamics corrections of orders and
in atomic units, where and denote
the Rydberg and fine structure constants. The fine-structure splitting due to
the coupling between the electron spin and the orbital angular momentum of the
, and the radiative and Auger decay rates of the states are also
calculated. Some states and retain
nanosecond-scale lifetimes against absorption into the helium nucleus.
We propose to use laser pulses to induce transitions from these
metastable states, to states with large ( s) Auger rates.
The ion that remains after Auger emission of the
electron undergoes Stark mixing with the , , and states during
collisions with the helium atoms in the experimental target. This leads to
immediate nuclear absorption of the . The resonance condition between
the laser beam and the atom is thus revealed as a sharp spike in the rates of
neutrons, protons, deuterons, and tritons that emerge....(continued)Comment: 25 pages, 3 tables, 11 figure
Alapvető szimmetriák vizsgálata antiprotonokkal = Study of fundamental symmetries using antiprotons
| Our activity is connected to the experiments of the ASACUSA collaboration at the Antiproton Decelerator of CERN, mainly to the tests of CPT invariance, stating the equivalence of matter and antimatter. Using tunable lasers to stimulate transitions between short- and long-lived states in antiprotonic helium atoms, from the transition energies we determine the antiproton-to-electron mass ratio. Performing the measurements in low-pressure cold gas, stabilising the laser tune using a frequency comb and reducing the Doppler broadening from atomic motion using two-photon spectroscopy we managed to reach a precision of determining to antiproton mass close to that of the proton. Using a laser-microwave-laser triple resonance technique we have measured the magnetic moment of the antiproton in He-4 and He-3 atoms in agreement with the theoretical predictions. We have built a prototype of a two-tone Paul-trap for antihydrogen formation and also a detector system for testing antihydrogen annihilation. We have measured single ionization cross sections for collisions of low-energy antiprotons with hydrogen molecules and calculated singly and doubly differential cross sections for collisons of antiprotons with helium and also for the ionization of hydrogen and water molecules in a polarized laser field. Measured the temperature dependence of ionic conductivity in capillaries and showed that at low energies elastic collisions whereas at higher ones Coulomb repulsion dominate
High-resolution laser resonances of antiprotonic helium in superfluid 4He
When atoms are placed into liquids, their optical spectral lines corresponding to the electronic transitions are greatly broadened compared to those of single, isolated atoms. This linewidth increase can often reach a factor of more than a million, obscuring spectroscopic structures and preventing high-resolution spectroscopy, even when superfluid helium, which is the most transparent, cold and chemically inert liquid, is used as the host material(1-6). Here we show that when an exotic helium atom with a constituent antiproton(7-9) is embedded into superfluid helium, its visible-wavelength spectral line retains a sub-gigahertz linewidth. An abrupt reduction in the linewidth of the antiprotonic laser resonance was observed when the liquid surrounding the atom transitioned into the superfluid phase. This resolved the hyperfine structure arising from the spin-spin interaction between the electron and antiproton with a relative spectral resolution of two parts in 10(6), even though the antiprotonic helium resided in a dense matrix of normal matter atoms. The electron shell of the antiprotonic atom retains a small radius of approximately 40 picometres during the laser excitation(7). This implies that other helium atoms containing antinuclei, as well as negatively charged mesons and hyperons that include strange quarks formed in superfluid helium, may be studied by laser spectroscopy with a high spectral resolution, enabling the determination of the particle masses(9). The sharp spectral lines may enable the detection of cosmic-ray antiprotons(1)(0,)(11) or searches for antideuterons(12) that come to rest in liquid helium targets
Microwave spectroscopic study of the hyperfine structure of antiprotonic helium-3
In this work we describe the latest results for the measurements of the
hyperfine structure of antiprotonic helium-3. Two out of four measurable
super-super-hyperfine SSHF transition lines of the (n,L)=(36,34) state of
antiprotonic helium-3 were observed. The measured frequencies of the individual
transitions are 11.12548(08) GHz and 11.15793(13) GHz, with an increased
precision of about 43% and 25% respectively compared to our first measurements
with antiprotonic helium-3 [S. Friedreich et al., Phys. Lett. B 700 (2011)
1--6]. They are less than 0.5 MHz higher with respect to the most recent
theoretical values, still within their estimated errors. Although the
experimental uncertainty for the difference of 0.03245(15) GHz between these
frequencies is large as compared to that of theory, its measured value also
agrees with theoretical calculations. The rates for collisions between
antiprotonic helium and helium atoms have been assessed through comparison with
simulations, resulting in an elastic collision rate of gamma_e = 3.41 +- 0.62
MHz and an inelastic collision rate of gamma_i = 0.51 +- 0.07 MHz.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with

Scintillation detectors with silicon photomultiplier readout in a dilution refrigerator at temperatures down to 0.2 K
We are developing a novel high-brightness atomic beam, comprised of a two-body exotic atom called muonium (M = μ + + e -), for next-generation atomic physics and gravitational interaction measurements. This M source originates from a thin sheet of superfluid helium (SFHe), hence diagnostics and later measurements require a detection system which is operational in a dilution cryostat at temperatures below 1 K. In this paper, we describe the operation and characterization of silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) at ultra-low temperatures in SFHe targets. We show the temperature dependence of the signal shape, breakdown voltage, and single photon detection efficiency, concluding that single photon detection with SiPMs below 0.85 K is feasible. Furthermore, we show the development of segmented scintillation detectors, where 16 channels at 1.7 K and one channel at 170 mK were commissioned using a muon beam.ISSN:1748-022
