Dealing with Qualitative and Quantitative Features in Legal Domains
In this work, we enrich a formalism for argumentation by including a formal
characterization of features related to the knowledge, in order to capture
proper reasoning in legal domains. We add meta-data information to the
arguments in the form of labels representing quantitative and qualitative data
about them. These labels are propagated through an argumentative graph
according to the relations of support, conflict, and aggregation between

The Cost of Social Agents
In this paper we follow the BOID (Belief, Obligation, Intention, Desire) architecture to describe agents and agent types in Defeasible Logic. We argue that the introduction of obligations can provide a new reading of the concepts of intention and intentionality. Then we examine the notion of social agent (i.e., an agent where obligations prevail over intentions) and discuss some computational and philosophical issues related to it. We show that the notion of social agent either requires more complex computations or has some philosophical drawbacks
AI Risk Assessment: A Scenario-Based, Proportional Methodology for the AI Act
The EU Artificial Intelligence Act (AIA) defines four risk categories for AI systems: unacceptable, high, limited, and minimal. However, it lacks a clear methodology for the assessment of these risks in concrete situations. Risks are broadly categorized based on the application areas of AI systems and ambiguous risk factors. This paper suggests a methodology for assessing AI risk magnitudes, focusing on the construction of real-world risk scenarios. To this scope, we propose to integrate the AIA with a framework developed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports and related literature. This approach enables a nuanced analysis of AI risk by exploring the interplay between (a) risk determinants, (b) individual drivers of determinants, and (c) multiple risk types. We further refine the proposed methodology by applying a proportionality test to balance the competing values involved in AI risk assessment. Finally, we present three uses of this approach under the AIA: to implement the Regulation, to assess the significance of risks, and to develop internal risk management systems for AI deployers
An axiomatic characterization of temporalised belief revision in the law
This paper presents a belief revision operator that considers time intervals for modelling norm change in the law. This approach relates techniques from belief revision formalisms and time intervals with temporalised rules for legal systems. Our goal is to formalise a temporalised belief base and corresponding timed derivation, together with a proper revision operator. This operator may remove rules when needed or adapt intervals of time when contradictory norms are added in the system. For the operator, both constructive definition and an axiomatic characterisation by representation theorems are given

Evolution of the magma system of Pantelleria (Italy) from 190 ka to present
The eruptive history of Pantelleria has been marked by the eruption of nine peralkaline ignimbrites,
with inter-ignimbrite episodes from small, local volcanic centres. New whole-rock geochemical
data are presented for seven ignimbrites and used with published data for younger units to track
compositional changes with time. From»190 ka, silicicmagmatismwas dominated by comenditic trachyte
to comendite compositions, evolving along generally similar liquid lines of descent (LLOD). The
final ignimbrite, the Green Tuff (»46 ka), was tapped from a compositionally zoned pantelleritic upper
reservoir to a trachytic mush zone. Younger (20–7 ka) silicic magmatism has been relatively small
scale, with compositions similar to the earliest pre-Green Tuff pantelleritic ignimbrite (Zinedi). These
data suggest that the comenditic reservoirs may have been emplaced at deeper levels than the pantelleritic
reservoirs. While both types of series evolved along similar LLOD dominated by fractionation
of alkali feldspar, it is the fractionation of iron that determines whether comendite or pantellerite is
produced. The deeper reservoirs were more oxidizing and wetter, thus leading to the crystallization of
magnetite and therefore the fractionation of iron
Geochemical Constraints on Mantle Sources and Basalt Petrogenesis in the Strait of Sicily Rift Zone (Italy): Insights into the Importance of Short Lengthscale Mantle Heterogeneity.
Igneous activity from the late Miocene to historic time (most recently 1891 ce) in the Strait of Sicily has created two islands (Pantelleria and Linosa) and several seamounts. These volcanoes are dominated by transitional (ol+hy-normative) to alkaline (ne-normative) basaltic lavas and scoriae; peralkaline felsic rocks (trachyte-rhyolite) crop out only on Pantelleria. Although most likely erupted through continental crust, basalts demonstrate no evidence of crustal contamination and are geochemically similar to oceanic island basalts (OIB). Despite their isotopic similarities, there are considerable compositional differences with respect to major and trace element geochemistry both between and within the two islands that are due to short-length scale mantle heterogeneity beneath the region as well as variability in partial melting and magma storage conditions. Published geophysical surveys suggest that lithospheric thickness beneath both islands is ~60 km; this is consistent with the results of our geochemical modelling (59-60 km), which also suggest mantle potential temperatures between 1415-1435°C, similar to other documented continental passive rifts. Although there is some compositional overlap between the three synthems at Linosa, in general the older magmas (Arena Bianca, 700 ka) formed as a result of ~5% partial melting of a depleted MORB mantle (DMM) source enriched with a relatively small amount of recycled MORB material, which differentiated in a shallow-level (~8 km) magma chamber prior to eruption whereas the younger magmas (Monte Bandiera, 530 ka) formed as a result of ~2% partial melting of a similar mantle source, which differentiated in a magma chamber at or below the base of the crust (~25 km). Pantelleria magmas formed from a higher degree (~6%) of partial melting of a DMM source enriched with a relatively greater amount of recycled MORB material with possibly other components. Data for the seamounts are scarce and compromised by significant seawater alteration; thus, these volcanic centers cannot be modelled but based on comparative geochemistry with the islands are likely the result of even smaller (60 km) lithosphere. Magmas stored in the higher-level chamber were more effectively homogenized and preserve a narrower compositional range. Despite the geophysical similarities between the two islands in terms of lithospheric thickness and crustal thinning, melt productivity has been greater at Pantelleria, producing a much larger island and sustaining felsic magmatism, which may ultimately be entirely due to the local occurrence of much more fusible mantle
Exploring the interdependencies of research funders in the UK
Investment in medical research is vital to the continuing improvement of the UK's health and wealth. It is through research that we expand our understanding of disease and develop new treatments for patients. Medical research charities currently contribute over £1 billion annually to medical research in the UK, of which over £350 million is provided by Cancer Research UK. Many charities,
including Cancer Research UK, receive no government funding for their research
activity.
Cancer Research UK is engaged in a programme of work in order to better understand the medical research funding environment and demonstrate the importance of sustained investment. A key part of that is the Office of Health
Economics‟ (OHE) 2011 report “Exploring the interdependency between public and charitable medical research”. This study found that there are substantial
benefits, both financial and qualitative, from the existence of a variety of funders and that reductions in the level of government financial support for medical
research are likely to have broader negative effects.
This contributed to other evidence which found that the activities and funding of the charity, public and private sectors respectively are complementary, i.e. mutually reinforcing, rather than duplicative or merely substituting for one another.

This report uncovers the extent to which funders of cancer research are interdependent, nationally and internationally. Key figures show that two
thirds of publications acknowledging external support have relied on multiple funders, while just under half benefited from overseas funding, and almost a fifth are also supported by industry. In addition the analysis
shows that the general public would not want tax funding of cancer research to be reduced, but would not donate enough to charities to compensate for any such reduction
Timescale of Emplacement and Rheomorphism of the Green Tuff Ignimbrite (Pantelleria, Italy)
We present a multidisciplinary study based on Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), paleomagnetic analysis, and numerical modeling to gain information on the timescales of syn- and post-depositional ductile deformation of the strongly welded and rheomorphic Green Tuff ignimbrite (GT; Pantelleria, Italy). DSC measurements allow the determination of glass fictive temperatures (Tf; i.e., the parameter accounting for the cooling dependence of glass structure and properties). Using a Tf-based geospeedometry procedure, we infer the cooling rate (qc) experienced by the glassy phases in different lithofacies within the GT formation. Glass shards from the basal pumice fall deposit record a fast qc of ∼10°C/s. In contrast, the ignimbrite body returns slow qc values depending on the stratigraphic position and lithofacies (basal/upper vitrophyres, fiamme-rich and rheomorphic layers), ranging from ∼10−2 to ∼10−6 °C/s. Moreover, paleomagnetic analyses of the natural remanent magnetization of ignimbrite matrix and embedded lithic clasts indicate an emplacement temperature higher than 550–600°C. By integrating calorimetric and paleomagnetic datasets, we constrain a conductive cooling model, describing the ignimbrite's temperature-time-viscosity (T–t–η) evolution from the eruptive temperature to below Tf. Outcomes suggest that the upper and basal vitrophyres deformed and quenched over hours, indicating that the entire GT underwent intense syn-depositional ductile deformation. Furthermore, the central body remained above Tf for a much longer timespan (>1 month), enabling post-emplacement rheomorphic flow. Lastly, we discuss the critical role of mechanisms such as shear heating and retrograde solubility of volatiles, in locally controlling the rheological behavior of the GT
First Report of Pseudomonas Grapevine Bunch Rot Caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae .
Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae, a Gammaproteobacterium belonging to genomospecies 2 within the P. syringae complex, is distributed worldwide, and it is responsible for bacterial canker on >100 different hosts, including the grapevine. P. syringae pv. syringae induces necrotic lesions in the leaf blades, veins, petioles, shoots, rachis, and tendrils on grapevine cultivars in different areas. P. syringae pv. syringae has been associated with severe economic losses in different grape cultivars in Australia, where it causes inflorescence rot. In midsummer to late summer 2017, symptoms of berry rots differing from those caused by the common berry rots agents were observed in different cultivar Red Globe vineyards of Apulia (southern Italy). As proven by fulfillment of Koch's postulates, these symptoms were caused by a bacterium that, according to the results of biochemical, physiological, nutritional, antimicrobial activity, and pathogenicity tests and sequencing of 16S ribosomal DNA, gyrB, rpoB, and rpoD genes, was identified as P. syringae pv. syringae.
