    The provision of distance education within the HE sector - some areas for concern

    This paper presents a summary of the findings of a recent survey of the way in which UK higher education institutions (HEIs) are offering distance education (DE) courses, the types of courses being offered, and their modes of delivery. From analysis of the findings of this survey, it is apparent that the emphasis of HEIs is very much on the exploitation of available teaching technology in the delivery of DE courses. However, teaching at a distance is quite different from face-toface teaching, and the evidence suggests that many HEIs fail to implement any meaningful academic staff training for the new role of DE tutor. The authors consider the difficulties this presents to academic staff who are required to move from face-to-face teaching to online facilitating. The paper concludes with an examination of the current provision of staff development and training within UK HEIs and suggests the type of academic staff training required if DE courses are to become truly core activities

    Examining the existence of double jeopardy and negative double jeopardy within Twitter

    Purpose: The theory of Double Jeopardy (DJ) is shown to hold across broad ranging geographies and physical product categories. However, there is very little research appertaining to the subject within an online environment. In particular, studies that investigate the presence of DJ and the contrasting view point to DJ, namely that of Negative Double Jeopardy (NDJ), are lacking. This study contributes to this identified research gap, and examines the presence of DJ and NDJ within a product category, utilising data from Twitter. Design/methodology/approach: 354,676 tweets are scraped from Twitter and their sentiment analysed and allocated into positive, negative and no-opinion clusters using fuzzy c-means clustering. The sentiment is then compared to the market share of brands within the beer product category to establish whether a DJ or NDJ effect is present. Findings: The data reveals an NDJ effect with regards to original tweets (i.e. tweets which have not been retweeted). That is, when analysing tweets relating to brands within a defined beer category, we find that larger brands suffer by having an increased negativity amongst the larger proportion of tweets associated with them. Research limitations/implications: The clustering approach to analyse sentiment in Twitter data brings a new direction to analysis of such sentiment. Future consideration of different numbers of clusters may further the insights this form of analysis can bring to the DJ/NDJ phenomenon. Managerial implications discuss the uncovered practitioner’s paradox of NDJ and strategies for dealing with DJ and NDJ effects. Originality/value: This study is the first to explore the presence of DJ and NDJ through the utilisation of sentiment analysis derived data and fuzzy clustering. DJ and NDJ are under-explored constructs in the online environment. Typically, past research examines DJ and NDJ in separate and detached fashions. Thus, the study is of theoretical value because it outlines boundaries to the DJ and NDJ conditions. Second, this research is the first study to analyse the sentiment of consumer-authored tweets to explore DJ and NDJ effects. This study also highlights the need to separate original tweets from retweets because our data shows that jeopardy dynamics differ in these different domains. Finally, the current study offers valuable insight into the DJ and NDJ effects for practicing marketing managers.     As wine and food trends move and evolve, new needs are presenting in the food and wine industries. We will here explore education for hospitality, the importance of information about a product’s origin and consumption locale. We will look at the word educate, as defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary, both as it pertains to hospitality professionals “to train by formal instruction and supervised practice especially in a skill, trade, or profession” and as part of evolving hospitality toward guests “to provide with information”. We will consider how today’s consumer body and labour force are moving through a generational transition, bringing technological evolution and heightened awareness of food and wine provenance. We will consider the difference between hedonic and eudaimonic satisfaction for consumer and provider, discussing these topics with working professionals in international markets while observing commonality and diversity throughout

    Assessing and Improving the Ecological Function of Linear Parks Along the Lower Los Angeles River Channel, Los Angeles County, California, US

    Long overlooked by conservation groups and ecologists, urban open spaces are now seen as important contributors to biodiversity at various scales. Urban greenspaces often represent the only “nature” millions of human residents around the world ever interact with, and provide cooling and aesthetic relief from the urban hardscape. In the Los Angeles Metropolitan area, over the past three decades, non-profit advocacy groups and institutions have established a network of bike paths, neighborhood access points, habitat restoration, and recreational amenities along the Los Angeles River, a major urban waterway. We investigated the environmental contribution provided by numerous linear landscaped parks along the river, focusing on climate amelioration (i.e., cooling within heat islands) in the parks and surrounding neighborhoods, and on their contribution to local biodiversity, utilizing an indicator species approach. We conducted plant surveys of the parks, documenting locally native, non-local California native, and non-native species, and examined the occurrence of 15 riparian indicator species of wildlife in the parks and in 500-meter buffer zones surrounding each park utilizing citizen science data. We then explore correlations between indicator species richness and environmental variables. We note important occurrences of relict riparian vegetation in several linear parks, as well as both planted and naturally-occurring special-status plant and wildlife species. Finally, we discuss challenges to managing natural habitat in highly-urban parks, many of which support important relict vegetation and/or special-status species, and offer suggestions on how they may be improved

    Rangelands worldwide have experienced significant shifts from grass-dominated to woody-plant dominated states over the past century. In North America, these shifts are largely driven by overgrazing and landscape-scale fire suppression. Such shifts reduce productivity for livestock, can have broad-scale impacts to biodiversity, and are often difficult to reverse. Restoring grass dominance often involves restoring fire as an ecological process. However, many resprouting woody plants persist following disturbance, including fire, by resprouting from protected buds, rendering fire ineffective for reducing resprouting woody plant density. Recent research has shown that extreme fire (high-energy fires during periods of water stress) may reduce resprouting capacity. This previous research did not examine whether high-energy fires alone would be sufficient to cause mortality. We created an experimental framework for assessing the “buds-protection-resources” hypothesis of resprouting persistence under different fire energies. In July–August 2018 we exposed 48 individuals of a dominant resprouting woody plant in the region, honey mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa), to two levels of fire energy (high and low) and root crown exposure (exposed vs unexposed) and evaluated resprouting capacity. We censused basal and epicormic resprouts for two years following treatment. Water stress was moderate for several months leading up to fires but low in subsequent years. Epicormic and basal buds were somewhat protected from lowand high-energy fire. However, epicormic buds were protected in very few mesquites subjected to high-energy fires. High-energy fires decreased survival, caused loss of apical dominance, and left residual dead stems, which may increase chances of mortality from future fires. Basal resprout numbers were reduced by high-energy fires, which may have additional implications for long-term mesquite survival. While the buds, protection, and resources components of resprouter persistence all played a role in resprouting, high-energy fire decreased mesquite survival and reduced resprouting. This suggests that high-energy fires affect persistence mechanisms to different extents than low-energy fires. In addition, high-energy fires during normal rainfall can have negative impacts on resprouting capacity; water stress is not a necessary precursor to honey mesquite mortality from highenergy fire

    Development of a Novel miR-3648-Related Gene Signature as a Prognostic Biomarker in Esophageal Adenocarcinoma

    Background: Esophageal adenocarcinoma (EA) is a typical immunogenic malignant tumor with a dismal 5-year survival rate lower than 20%. Although miRNA-3648 (miR-3648) is expressed abnormally in EA, its impact on the tumor immune microenvironment remains unknown. In this study, we sought to identify immune-related genes (IRGs) that are targeted by miR-3648 and develop an EA multigene signature. Methods: The gene expression data of 87 EA tumor samples and 67 normal tissue samples from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) database were downloaded, respectively. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), the CIBERSORT algorithm, and Cox regression analysis were applied to identify IRGs and to construct a prognostic signature and nomogram. Results: MiR-3648 was expectedly highly expressed in EA tumor tissues (P=2.6e-8), and related to the infiltration of activated natural killer cells (NK cells) and activated CD4 T lymphocytes (CD4 cells). A total of 70 miR-3648-targeted genes related to immune cell infiltration were identified. Among them, 4 genes (C10orf55, DLL4, PANX2, and NKAIN1) were closely related to overall survival (OS), and were thus selected to construct a 4-gene risk score (RS). The RS had a superior capability to predict OS [area under the curve (AUC) =0.740 for 1 year; AUC =0.717 for 3 years; AUC =0.622 for 5 years]. A higher score was indicative of a poorer prognosis than a lower score [hazard ratio (HR) =2.71; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.45–5.09; P=0.002]. Furthermore, the nomogram formed by combining the RS and the TNM classification of malignant tumors (TNM stage) improved the accuracy of survival prediction [Harrell’s concordance index (C-index) =0.698]. Conclusions: MiR-3648 may play a critical role in EA pathogenesis. The novel 4-gene signature may serve as a prognostic tool to manage patients with EA

    Exotic herbivores and fire energy drive standing herbaceous biomass but do not alter compositional patterns in a semiarid savanna ecosystem

    Questions: Fire regime alterations are pushing open ecosystems worldwide past tipping points where alternative steady states characterized by woody dominance prevail. This reduces the frequency and intensity of surface fires, further limiting their effectiveness for controlling cover of woody plants. In addition, grazing pressure (exotic or native grazers) can reinforce woody encroachment by potentially reducing fine-fuel loads. We investigated the effects of different fire energies on the herbaceous plant community, together with mammalian wildlife herbivory (exotic and native combined) exclusion, to inform best management practices. Location: Texas semi-arid savanna, southern Great Plains, USA. Methods: We conducted an experiment in which we manipulated fire intensity and herbivore access to herbaceous biomass in a split-plot design. We altered fire energy via fuel addition rather than applying fire under different environmental conditions to control for differences in standing biomass and composition attributable to differential plant physiological status and fire season. Results: High-energy fire did not reduce herbaceous biomass or alter plant community composition, although it did increase among-plot variability in composition and forb biomass relative to low-energy fire and non-burned controls. Grazing pressure from native and non-native mammalian herbivores reduced above-ground herbaceous biomass regardless of fire treatments, but did not alter community composition. Conclusions: Managers seeking to apply high-intensity prescribed fire to reduce woody encroachment will not negatively impact herbaceous plant productivity or alter community composition. However, they should be cognizant that repeated fires necessary for greatly reducing woody plants in heavily invaded areas might be difficult to accomplish due to fine-fuel reduction from wild herbivores. High fencing to restrict access by wildlife herbivores or culling might be necessary to build fuels sufficient to conduct high-intensity burns for woody-plant reductio

    Q methodology and a Delphi poll: a useful approach to researching a narrative approach to therapy

    Q methodology and a Delphi poll combined qualitative and quantitative methods to explore definitions of White and Epston's (1990) narrative approach to therapy among a group of UK practitioners. A Delphi poll was used to generate statements about narrative therapy. The piloting of statements by the Delphi panel identified agreement about theoretical ideas underpinning narrative therapy and certain key practices. A wider group of practitioners ranked the statements in a Q sort and made qualitative comments about their sorting. Quantitative methods (principal components analysis) were used to extract eight accounts of narrative therapy, five of which are qualitatively analysed in this paper. Agreement and differences were identified across a range of issues, including the social construction of narratives, privileging a political stance or narrative techniques and the relationship with other therapies, specifically systemic psychotherapy. Q methodology, combined with the Delphi poll, was a unique and innovative feature of this study

    A new layout optimization technique for interferometric arrays, applied to the MWA

    Antenna layout is an important design consideration for radio interferometers because it determines the quality of the snapshot point spread function (PSF, or array beam). This is particularly true for experiments targeting the 21 cm Epoch of Reionization signal as the quality of the foreground subtraction depends directly on the spatial dynamic range and thus the smoothness of the baseline distribution. Nearly all sites have constraints on where antennas can be placed---even at the remote Australian location of the MWA (Murchison Widefield Array) there are rock outcrops, flood zones, heritages areas, emergency runways and trees. These exclusion areas can introduce spatial structure into the baseline distribution that enhance the PSF sidelobes and reduce the angular dynamic range. In this paper we present a new method of constrained antenna placement that reduces the spatial structure in the baseline distribution. This method not only outperforms random placement algorithms that avoid exclusion zones, but surprisingly outperforms random placement algorithms without constraints to provide what we believe are the smoothest constrained baseline distributions developed to date. We use our new algorithm to determine antenna placements for the originally planned MWA, and present the antenna locations, baseline distribution, and snapshot PSF for this array choice.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 1 table.     High-energy sources at low radio frequency : the Murchison Widefield Array view of Fermi blazars

This article may be used for non-commercial purposes in accordance with the EDP Sciences self-archiving policies.Low-frequency radio arrays are opening a new window for the study of the sky, both to study new phenomena and to better characterize known source classes. Being flat-spectrum sources, blazars are so far poorly studied at low radio frequencies. We characterize the spectral properties of the blazar population at low radio frequency compare the radio and high-energy properties of the gamma-ray blazar population, and search for radio counterparts of unidentified gamma-ray sources. We cross-correlated the 6,100 deg^2 Murchison Widefield Array Commissioning Survey catalogue with the Roma blazar catalogue, the third catalogue of active galactic nuclei detected by Fermi-LAT, and the unidentified members of the entire third catalogue of gamma-ray sources detected by \fermilat. When available, we also added high-frequency radio data from the Australia Telescope 20 GHz catalogue. We find low-frequency counterparts for 186 out of 517 (36%) blazars, 79 out of 174 (45%) gamma-ray blazars, and 8 out of 73 (11%) gamma-ray blazar candidates. The mean low-frequency (120--180 MHz) blazar spectral index is αlow=0.57±0.02\langle \alpha_\mathrm{low} \rangle=0.57\pm0.02: blazar spectra are flatter than the rest of the population of low-frequency sources, but are steeper than at \simGHz frequencies. Low-frequency radio flux density and gamma-ray energy flux display a mildly significant and broadly scattered correlation. Ten unidentified gamma-ray sources have a (probably fortuitous) positional match with low radio frequency sources. Low-frequency radio astronomy provides important information about sources with a flat radio spectrum and high energy. However, the relatively low sensitivity of the present surveys still misses a significant fraction of these objects. Upcoming deeper surveys, such as the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-Sky MWA (GLEAM) survey, will provide further insight into this population.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
