    Who Gets Vocal about Hyperlocal: Neighborhood Involvement and Socioeconomics in the Sharing of Hyperlocal News

A reader survey of 10 hyperlocal news websites that operate in a variety of communities in the United States was conducted (n = 2289). More readers indicated sharing hyperlocal news in person than through email or social media. Higher neighborhood involvement and higher education tended to characterize readers who shared hyperlocal news via each of the three channels. Education moderated the association between neighborhood involvement and sharing news in person and via social media. These results suggested that highly involved readers with little education used social media more than their highly educated neighbors to share news from hyperlocal websites. The study extends the precepts of channel complementarity theory into the domain of online news sharing

    A role for SUMO modification in transcriptional repression and activation

    Since the discovery of the SUMO (small ubiquitin-like modifier) family of proteins just over a decade ago, a plethora of substrates have been uncovered including many regulators of transcription. Conjugation of SUMO to target proteins has generally been considered as a repressive modification. However, there are now a growing number of examples where sumoylation has been shown to activate transcription. Here we discuss whether there is something intrinsically repressive about sumoylation, or if the outcome of this modification in the context of transcription will prove to be largely substrate-dependent. We highlight some of the technical challenges that will be faced by attempting to answer this question

    Applying mixed-effects growth models to back-calculated size-at-age data for Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus)

    We fit growth models to back-calculated size-at-age data for Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) captured in the western Atlantic management area to inform alternative growth scenarios within the current management framework of the species. The Modified-Fry function was the best-performing of three back-calculation functions based on a leave-one-out cross-validation for within-cohort comparisons. We fit multiple growth models to the back-calculated growth trajectories, and demonstrated that growth parameters were highly sensitive to whether the lack of independence between back-calculated lengths from each individual was accounted for by the model. Non-linear mixed-effects modelling provides a suitable approach for accounting for this lack of independence and the autocorrelation between back-calculated lengths from the same individual. We further demonstrated the utility of mixed-effects models for predicting future growth of individuals using a forecasting test. We used this modelling approach to demonstrate that male bluefin tuna had greater estimated asymptotic length than females, and found that there was no significant difference in growth parameters between individuals assigned to genetically distinct spawning stocks.1,58
