Cloze Encounters of a Different Kind
The cloze test usually consists of a graded reading passage from which words have been deleted according to some methodical strategy. such as every fifth word. every tenth word. every pronoun. etc. The deleted words are replaced with blanks of a uniform size. and the student is asked to fill in the blanks with the most appropriate word
Toward a More Cognitive Definition of Reading Comprehension
Perhaps the most pervasive and unsettling problem confronting the community of reading educators, researchers, and theorists is the lack of a commonly held view of the precise nature of reading comprehension. Comprehension has developed denotative and connotative characteristics which befuddle even the most serious students of language and language processes.
This paper proposes, as a partial solution to this vexing situation, a straightforward theoretical construct as a lexical equivalent of the technical term. The focus here is upon relating reading comprehension to a variety of research and theoretical paradigms which lend themselves to divergent interpretations, but which have a common conceptual base
Draft genome sequence of a Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi strain resistant to fourth-generation cephalosporin and fluoroquinolone antibiotics
ABSTRACT
Typhoid is endemic in developing countries. We report here the first draft genome sequence of a
Salmonella enterica
serovar Typhi clinical isolate from Pakistan exhibiting resistance to cefepime (a fourth-generation cephalosporin) and fluoroquinolone antibiotics, two of the last-generation therapies against this pathogen. The genome is ~4.8 Mb, with two putative plasmids.

Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential Testing Payment Policy Review for Clinicians and Payers
Purpose of review A recent American Academy of Neurology Evidence-Based Practice Guideline on vestibular myogenic evoked potential (VEMP) testing has described superior canal dehiscence syndrome (SCDS) and evaluated the merits of VEMP in its diagnosis. SCDS is an uncommon but now well-recognized cause of dizziness and auditory symptoms. This article familiarizes health care providers with this syndrome and the utility and shortcomings of VEMP as a diagnostic test and also explores payment policies for VEMP. Recent findings In carefully selected patients with documented history compatible with the SCDS, both high-resolution temporal bone CT scan and VEMP are valuable aids for diagnosis. Payers might be unfamiliar with both this syndrome and VEMP testing. Summary It is important to raise awareness of VEMP and its possible indications and the rationale for coverage of VEMP testing. Payers may not be readily receptive to VEMP coverage if this test is used in an undifferentiated manner for all common vestibular and auditory symptoms

Stop Using the Modified Work APGAR to Measure Job Satisfaction
Background. The psychometric properties of the Modified Work APGAR (MWA) scale are not established, yet researchers use this scale as an overall measure of job satisfaction. Objective. Perform psychometric analyses on the MWA scale using data from two populations. Methods. A landmark occupational cohort and a clinical cohort are populations with low back pain studied. The first five items of the MWA scale measure social support from coworkers, one item measures dissatisfaction with job tasks, and the sixth item measures lack of social support from a supervisor. Exploratory principal components analyses were conducted in both cohorts. Results. In both cohorts, the first five items of the MWA scale loaded consistently onto one factor, social support from coworkers subscale. Conclusions. Unless researchers are interested in measuring social support from coworkers only, future studies should use other reliable and valid instruments to measure a broad range of psychosocial work characteristics
Draft genome sequence of the blaOXA-436- and blaNDM-1-harboring Shewanella putrefaciens SA70 isolate
ABSTRACT
We sequenced a carbapenem-resistant
Shewanella putrefaciens
isolate cultured from the sink handle of a Pakistan hospital room. Assembly annotation indicates that the isolate has a chromosomal

Neonatal ureteral obstruction stimulates recruitment of renin-secreting renal cortical cells
Neonatal ureteral obstruction stimulates recruitment of renin-secreting renal cortical cells. Unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) in the neonate increases ipsilateral renal renin gene expression, an effect which is mediated by renal nerves. To determine whether neonatal UUO alters the number of renal cortical cells secreting renin and whether this change is modulated by renal nerve activity, newborn Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to left UUO, right uninephrectomy, or sham operation and studied four weeks thereafter. To evaluate the importance of renal nerves in this response, an additional group of animals underwent chemical sympathectomy with guanethidine. Ureteral obstruction was associated with marked reduction in renal mass in the obstructed kidney and contralateral compensatory hypertrophy, changes which were not altered by sympathectomy. Renin messenger RNA and renal renin content were elevated in the obstructed kidney. The number of cells secreting renin, measured by the reverse hemolytic plaque assay, was markedly increased in the obstructed kidney (45 ± 18 plaques/slide vs. 11 ± 1 plaques/slide in sham animals), but not in the opposite kidney or following uninephrectomy. This effect was not significantly altered by sympathectomy. There was no change in the amount of renin secreted per cell or in the secretory response to Ca++. These results show that UUO results in recruitment of cells not previously secreting renin by a mechanism independent of renal nerve activity. This recruitment occurs without alteration of the quantity of renin secreted per cell or in the normal regulatory effect of Ca++ on renin secretion. An increase in the number of renin-secreting cells may contribute to the activation of the renin-angiotensin system, and thus to the vasoconstriction observed following ureteral obstruction
Superficieibacter electus gen. nov., sp. nov., an extended-spectrum β-lactamase possessing member of the enterobacteriaceae family, isolated from Intensive Care Unit surfaces
<p>Two Gram-negative bacilli strains, designated BP-1(T) and BP-2, were recovered from two different Intensive Care Unit surfaces during a longitudinal survey in Pakistan. Both strains were unidentified using the bioMerieux VITEK MS IVD v2.3.3 and Bruker BioTyper MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry platforms. To more precisely determine the taxonomic identity of BP-1(T) and BP-2, we employed a biochemical and phylogenomic approach. The 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain BP-1(T) had the highest identity to Citrobacter farmeri CDC 2991-81(T) (98.63%) Citrobacter amalonaticus CECT 863(T) (98.56%), Citrobacter sedlakii NBRC 105722(T) (97.74%) and Citrobacter rodentium NBRC 105723(T) (97.74%). The biochemical utilization scheme of BP-1(T) using the Analytic Profile Index for Enterobacteriaceae (API20E) indicated its enzymatic functions are unique within the Enterobacteriaceae but most closely resemble Kluyvera spp., Enterobacter cloacae and Citrobacter koseri/farmeri. Phylogenomic analysis of the shared genes between BP-1(T), BP-2 and type strains from Kluyvera, Citrobacter, Escherichia, Salmonella, Kosakonia, Siccibacter and Shigella indicate that BP-1(T) and BP-2 isolates form a distinct branch from these genera. Average Nucleotide Identity analysis indicates that BP-1(T) and BP-2 are the same species. The biochemical and phylogenomic analysis indicate strains BP-1(T) and BP-2 represent a novel species from a new genus within the Enterobacteriaceae family, for which the name Superficieibacter electus gen. nov., sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is BP-1(T) (= ATCC BAA-2937, = NBRC 113412).</p
