Liver iron contents in rats after administration of certain iron compounds

    Get PDF
The effect of consumption of certain iron compounds on liver iron deposition was studied in rats, in each case at 4 dietary iron levels ranging from 70 to 206 mg/100 g diet. In one of two series the basic diet was maize porridge meal, and in the other, a semisynthetic 'balanced' diet was fed. The siderogenicity of the iron compounds, when fed with maize porridge meal, was found to be in the following order: ferrous chloride> pulverised steel> pulverised cast iron>ferric chloride>ferric citrate=ferric lactate> ferric oxide. The relatively high siderotic effect of cast iron was reduced considerably when fed together with a semisynthetic 'balanced' diet. It was concluded that the presence of free iron particles in food, as well as the conditions prevailing in the gut as a result of consumption of a predominantly maize diet, are important contributing factors in the development of siderosis in the rat and most probably also in Blacks.S. High-performance three-layer 1.3-/spl mu/m InAs-GaAs quantum-dot lasers with very low continuous-wave room-temperature threshold currents

    Get PDF
The combination of high-growth-temperature GaAs spacer layers and high-reflectivity (HR)-coated facets has been utilized to obtain low threshold currents and threshold current densities for 1.3-/spl mu/m multilayer InAs-GaAs quantum-dot lasers. A very low continuous-wave (CW) room-temperature threshold current of 1.5 mA and a threshold current density of 18.8 A/cm/sup 2/ are achieved for a three-layer device with a 1-mm HR/HR cavity. For a 2-mm cavity, the CW threshold current density is as low as 17 A/cm/sup 2/ for an HR/HR device. An output power as high as 100 mW is obtained for a device with HR/cleaved facets

Dualities, Twists, and Gauge Theories with Non-Constant Non-Commutativity

We study the world volume theory of D3-branes wrapping the Melvin universe supported by background NSNS B-field. In the appropriate decoupling limit, the open string dynamics is that of non-commutative guage field theory with non-constant non-commutativity. We identify this model as a simple Melvin twist of flat D3 branes. Along similar lines, one recognizes the model of Hashimoto and Sethi as being the Melvin null twist, and the model of Dolan and Nappi as being the null Melvin twist, of the flat D3-brane. This construction therefore offers a unified perspective on most of the known explicit constructions of non-commutative gauge theories as a decoupled theory of D-branes in a B-field background. We also describe the world volume theory on the D3-brane in Melvin universe which is decaying via the nucleation of monopole anti-monopole pair.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figure, References added, typo correcte

Quantum pumping and dissipation: from closed to open systems

Current can be pumped through a closed system by changing parameters (or fields) in time. The Kubo formula allows to distinguish between dissipative and non-dissipative contributions to the current. We obtain a Green function expression and an SS matrix formula for the associated terms in the generalized conductance matrix: the "geometric magnetism" term that corresponds to adiabatic transport; and the "Fermi golden rule" term which is responsible to the irreversible absorption of energy. We explain the subtle limit of an infinite system, and demonstrate the consistency with the formulas by Landauer and Buttiker, Pretre and Thomas. We also discuss the generalization of the fluctuation-dissipation relation, and the implications of the Onsager reciprocity.Comment: 4 page paper, 1 figure (published version) + 2 page appendi

Non-commutative gauge theory on D-branes in Melvin Universes

Non-commutative gauge theory with a non-constant non-commutativity parameter can be formulated as a decoupling limit of open strings ending on D3-branes wrapping a Melvin universe. We construct the action explicitly and discuss various physical features of this theory. The decoupled field theory is not supersymmetric. Nonetheless, the Coulomb branch appears to remain flat at least in the large N and large 't Hooft coupling limit. We also find the analogue of Prasad-Sommerfield monopoles whose size scales with the non-commutativity parameter and is therefore position dependent.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figure, reference adde

A compact scalable reconfigurable multiwavelength router is proposed and demonstrated using an electronically gated cyclic router. Simultaneous wavelength-multiplexed channel allocation is performed with power penalties of 0.2-0.8 dB. Nanosecond timescale reconfiguration is achieved within a 2-ns guard band using semiconductor optical amplifier gates

Time series modeling of cell cycle exit identifies Brd4 dependent regulation of cerebellar neurogenesis

Cerebellar neuronal progenitors undergo a series of divisions before irreversibly exiting the cell cycle and differentiating into neurons. Dysfunction of this process underlies many neurological diseases including ataxia and the most common pediatric brain tumor, medulloblastoma. To better define the pathways controlling the most abundant neuronal cells in the mammalian cerebellum, cerebellar granule cell progenitors (GCPs), we performed RNA-sequencing of GCPs exiting the cell cycle. Time-series modeling of GCP cell cycle exit identified downregulation of activity of the epigenetic reader protein Brd4. Brd4 binding to the Gli1 locus is controlled by Casein Kinase 1ÎŽ (CK1 ÎŽ)-dependent phosphorylation during GCP proliferation, and decreases during GCP cell cycle exit. Importantly, conditional deletion of Brd4 in vivo in the developing cerebellum induces cerebellar morphological deficits and ataxia. These studies define an essential role for Brd4 in cerebellar granule cell neurogenesis and are critical for designing clinical trials utilizing Brd4 inhibitors in neurological indications
