    Shifting Identities Through Switching Codes: a Close Look at the Social Languages of Pre-service English Teachers in an Indonesian Context

    The globalization of English has undoubtedly brought shifts into how the English language is taught in classroom settings and how English teachers are prepared. In English as a foreign language (EFL) settings, for example, teaching and learning English is generally influenced by local contexts. Taking into account the sociocultural contexts of the learners and the teachers, identity construction becomes one important aspect in the process of English teaching and learning. Focusing on the microanalysis of social language uses, the study was aimed to understand how pre-service teachers of English as a foreign language in a multilingual setting, Indonesia, enact their identities through their language use in classroom settings. The data for this study was obtained from a classroom observation where an English pre-service teacher was performing peer teaching. The discourse analysis of the first thirteen minutes of a pre-service teacher\u27s teaching demonstration indicates that multiple identities were enacted when the student teacher switched from one language to another. The pervasive use of code-switching in four different languages (Indonesian, English, Arabic, and Malay) provides clues that Mamas, a student teacher\u27s pseudonym in the study was enacting different identities as he taught his peers. While further research is absolutely necessary to obtain more vivid pictures of the reasons behind using multiple languages in teaching English within this context, the study provides insight about how pre-service teachers in an Indonesian context try to develop identities as they learn to teach English

    Sintesis dan Karakterisasi Karboksimetil Kitosan

    Karboksimetil kitosan merupakan derivate dari kitosan yang diperoleh melalui proses eterifikasi alkalis kitosan dengan asam monokloroasetat. Kitosan diperoleh dari deasetilasi kitin dalam kulit udang putih (Penaeus vannamei). Keberadaan kitin dalam kulit udang tidak dalam keadaan bebas, akan tetapi berikatan dengan protein, mineral, dan berbagai macam pigmen (zat warna). Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mensintesis dan mengkarakterisasi karboksimetil kitosan. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian diperoleh kitosan sebanyak 17,33% (per berat serbuk kulit udang) dan karboksimetil kitosan sebanyak 42% (per berat kitosan). Spektum IR karboksimetil kitosan menunjukan melebarnya serapan dari vibrasi ulur gugus -OH yang tumpang tindih dengan serapan vibrasi ulur –NH serta semakin tajamnya intensitas serapan pita ulur C=O dan vibrasi ulur C-O. Kadar air dari kitosan hasil sintesis sebesar 2,13% sedangkan karboksimetil kitosan sebesar 11,86%. Kadar abu kitosan hasil sintesis sebesar 0,73%, sedangkan kadar abu karboksimetil kitosan sebesar 0,93%. Swelling untuk kitosan hasil sintesis sebesar 163,13% sedangkan untuk karboksimetil kitosan sebesar 182,98 %

    The objective of this paper was to define the laying chicken production performance in the different stocking densities by evaluation of the feed intake, daily gain, feed convertion, uniformity and income over feed cost (IOFC).The completely randomised design was used in the research , A total 210 of 7 weeks old Isa Brown laying chicken were housed in the boxes in slatt rearing system at density of 6, 9, 12 and 15 birds/ m2 with 5 repition of each treatment. Result of trial indicate that stocking density had no significane effect on their feed intake, daily gain, feed convertion, uniformity and income over feed cost (IOFC). Consequently, the same production could be achieved by laying chicken with different stocking density (6,9 ,12 and 15 birds/m2 ) in the early grower phase

    Improving Students Pronunciation By Using Reading Aloud In Junior High School

    This research is held to improve the students pronunciation especially English words in the form short text used readin aloud. It is a Classroom Action Research which is conducted in three cycles. The subject of this research is grade VIII, which is consists 25 students. The data is collected by using observation checklist, fieldnote, and test. The data is analyzed by describing the observation checklist and filed note, and by using formula of mean score. The result indicate the students pronunciation in short text improve of each cycle by using reading aloud,it can be seen from the mean score on the third cycle was 76.6, it was categorized as good

    The aim of this research isto improvestudents\u27 reading comprehension onnarrative text. This research was conducted to eighth year students of SMP Negeri 14 Pontianak in academic year 2011/2012.The method of this research is classroom action researchThesubjectwas taken fromclass VIII C that consistsed of 30 students.The researcher acted as the teacher during the research period. The data were collected by using measurement and observation techniques and analyzed by describing the observation checklist, field note, and the students\u27 score. The researcher conducted the research in three cycles. The research findings show that the mean score of students\u27 reading comprehension test in the first cycle is 60.7, the second cycle is 63.3, and in the third cycle is68.1It means that students successfully pass the KriteriaKetuntasan Minimum (KKM) in this school that is65.This technique helped the students in understanding what the author meant and in drawing the conclusion from the narrative text given to them

    Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh penambahan tepung tulang ikan tuna dan kacangmerah pada berbagai variasi formula terhadap sifat kimia dan sifat sensoris susu jagung. Tulang ikan tuna yangdigunakan diharapkan dapat meningkatkan kadar kalsium dan kacang merah dapat meningkatkan kadar protein susujagung. Rancangan penelitian menggunakan Rancangan Acak Lengkap (RAL) dengan satu faktorial, yaitu variasipenambahan tepung tulang ikan tuna (Thunnus albacores) dan variasi penambahan kacang merah (Phaseolus vulgarisL.) pada susu jagung. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa penambahan tepung tulang ikan tuna dan kacang merahmempengaruhi karakteristik kimia susu jagung, yaitu meningkatkan kadar kalsium dan kadar protein, menurunkanderajat keasaman (pH) dan kadar lemak serta mempengaruhi nilai total padatan susu jagung. Penambahan tepung tulangikan tuna dan kacang merah tidak mempengaruhi karakteristik sensoris susu jagung, karena hasil analisis menunjukkanbahwa keempat sampel tersebut (kode F1, F2, F3, F4) tidak berbeda nyata untuk parameter warna, rasa, dan overall.Sedangkan untuk parameter aroma, hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa susu jagung kode F1 dan F3 tidak berbeda nyata,akan tetapi berbeda nyata dengan susu jagung kode F2 dan F
