Measuring the Water Level Datum Relative to the Ellipsoid During Hydrographic Survey

    Get PDF
Hydrographic surveys are referenced vertically to a local water level “chart” datum. Conducting a survey relative to the ellipsoid dictates a datum transformation take place before the survey is used for current navigational products. Models that combine estimates for the tide, sea surface topography, the geoid, and the ellipsoid are often used to transform an ellipsoid referenced survey to a local water level datum. Regions covered by these vertical datum transformation models are limited and so would appear to constrain the areas where ellipsoid referenced surveys can be conducted. Because areas not covered by a vertical datum transformation model still must have a tide model to conduct a hydrographic survey, survey‐ time measurements of the ellipsoid to water level datum can be conducted through the vessel reference point. This measured separation is largely a function of the vessel ellipsoid height and the standard survey tide model and thus introduces limited additional uncertainty than is typical in a water level referenced survey. This approach is useful for reducing ellipsoid reference surveys to the water level datum, examining a tide model, or for evaluating a vertical datum transformation model. Prototype tools and a comparison to typical vertical datum transformation models are discussed

Effect of grain source and brewer\u27s grain on the performance and serum cholesterol concentration of finishing steers

    Get PDF
The inclusion of brewer\u27s grains at 20% of the ration dry matter increased dry matter intake, resulting in poorer feed efficiency. Brewer\u27s grain appeared to increase serum cholesterol. Serum cholesterol increased as days on feed increased, similar to other reported studies. Steers fed grain sorghum had greater dry matter intakes and poorer feed efficiencies than those fed barley or wheat. Analysis of tissue samples has not been completed at this time, which prohibits drawing any conclusions as to the effect on tissue cholesterol concentrations

Integrating Industrial Laser Scanners for Small Vessel Operations

The NOAA Navigation Response Teams (NRTs) perform hydrographic surveys to support nautical charting updates for 175 ports of the United States Marine Transportation System. These include the identification of bathymetric and anthropogenic features that may pose a danger to navigation. In addition, NRTs respond to emergencies, speed the resumption of shipping after storm events, and protect life and property from underwater dangers. The spectrum of dangers occurs from natural features, such as rocks to anthropogenic objects such as piers.Previous work conducted by the NOAA Office of Coast Survey have shown that survey-grade laser scanners can be used to remotely map features that are dangers-to-navigation. However, the justifications to purchase these systems are difficult since one system can be on the order of several hundred thousand dollars. An alternative solution is proposed through the use of economical industrial laser scanners. The capabilities of these systems can vary widely with range and angular resolution and require additional integration (e.g., translation into geographic space and timing considerations) into the network of sensors typical of vessels engaged inhydrographic operations. This paper presents evaluation work to balance cost versus performance using an industrial laser scanner into a hydrographic system. The laser scanner wasevaluated in a laboratory setting at the Joint Hydrographic Center / Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping (CCOM/JHC), University of New Hampshire (UNH) water tank facilities and aboard the R/V Coastal Surveyor (Portsmouth Harbor, NH). The results of the study include a first-order analysis of Velodyne’s VLP-32E system and its target detection performance on piers, piles, air gaps and overhanging cables

Single vs. reimplant programs for finishing steers

    Get PDF
Finishing yearling beef steers were used to compare various implant programs in a 167-day trial. All implant programs increased daily gain ranging from 6.6 to 25.4% over non-implanted controls and improved feed efficiency ranging from .5 to 13.9%. Steers implanted with Ralgro® initially and reimplanted 75 days later with Synovex-S gained the fastest and mos

Effects of Rumensin or Rumensin-Tylan combination on steer performance and liver abscess control

    Get PDF
Combining Tylan with Rumensin dramatically reduced abscessed liver incidence, compared with that of steers fed a non-medicated control ration or Rumensin without Tylan. Only one steer out of 50 on the Rumensin plus Tylan combination had an abscessed liver, whereas livers from 16 of the control steers and 27 on Rumensin were condemned. There were no significant differences in daily gain among treatments; however, Rumensin plus Tylan improved feed efficiency by 9.4% compared with that of the control. Rumensin alone improved efficiency by 6%
