The Dynamics of Circular Migration in Southern Europe: An Example of Social Innovation
During economic crises, governments establish policies that facilitate the creation of jobs, goods and services that make their economies more resilient. Often, this requires innovative social programs that match global migratory trends to local labor demand. The implementation of such programs requires a significant degree of innovation that requires models that can capture the complexity involved. To explore this phenomenon, we provide a multi-disciplinary view of innovative social programs that shed light on the dynamic characteristics of the political, social, technological and economic aspects of circular migration. Our focus is a case study of the European Union-funded circular migration program to support the strawberry harvest in the province of Huelva in Spain. Covering the time period of 1999-2011, this paper provides a system dynamics model to represent the key elements that led to the success of circular migration from the standpoint of economic and social change. The model helps explain the key factors that make the program robust under recent economic crisis conditions. Based on a qualitative analytical approach, the model demonstrates how adaptive policies can enable macroeconomic equilibrium in environments where circular migration can be implemented. We also show that circular migration is not an impediment to economic recovery, in fact, it helps stabilize the labor supply in times of high uncertainty
Identidade e discurso em "Avenida Brasil"; "Falar, Ler e Escrever Português" e "Ponto de Encontro" Identity and Discourse in "Avenida Brasil'", "Falar, Ler e Escrever" and "Ponto de Encontro"
Eles mostram, assim, perspectivas muito diferentes das possibilidades discursivas em português como segunda língua.<br>This article analyzes three Portuguese as a Second Language textbooks, using methods of Critical Discourse Analysis centered in the concept of identity: Avenida Brasil 1 (1991), Falar, Ler, Escrever Português (1999), and Ponto de Encontro (2007). The paper discusses (1) the idea of language, knowledge, and language learning present in the text; (2) the power relations at play between speaker-receiver and within the text; and (3) how the texts present identity, culture and society, Brazil and the foreigner. The results show that the three books employ different discursive strategies to engage the reader and to approach issues related to ideology, language, language learning, and culture. They therefore present very different perspectives on the possible discourses in Portuguese as a Second Language

The discourse of Hugo Chávez in “Aló Presidente” : establishing the Bolivarian Revolution through television performance
textThis dissertation analyzes the discourse of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez in his weekly television show Aló Presidente. It focuses on the discursive practices in this genre by Chávez as an essential element in the Bolivarian Revolution; an exercise of power in itself, and a means to establish a direct relationship with the Venezuelan public.
The analysis shows that Aló Presidente employs unique discursive strategies to engage in a national dialogue, including: the use of repetition, lists, and fragmentation through the alternation of discursive genres, as well as deictic shift; the establishment of an ideology, the presentation of selected themes and stories; the construction of relationships with established social categories (middle-aged women, high-ranking military personnel, militant youth, etc.) through dialogue with interlocutors during the show; and a strict hierarchy in which Chávez appears as the ultimate leader, through deixis, turn-taking, and the use of targeted speech acts.
This study uses the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis, drawing mainly from Fairclough (2003) and van Dijk (1998, 2010). It also draws from theories of: (a) discourse genre, as in Charaudeau (2004) and Smith (2003); (b) deixis, as in Agha (2007); (c) dialogue, defined by Weigand (2009) and Tannen (2007); (d) political discourse, discussed in Chilton (2004); and (e) media discourse, as in Bourdieu (1991). The corpus is drawn from broadcasts ending with the digit 8 randomly selected between 2005 and 2007 (shows 218, 248, 278, 288, 298).
The conclusion is that the show serves as the main communication strategy of the Revolution, establishing a direct relationship with viewers, in which several conventional procedures of television discourse are flaunted. The discourse, which is anchored in the category of space, is well established as a new genre in political media discourse. It is directed to Chávez’s followers, divided into specific target groups, in a hierarchical fashion in which he occupies the power position. The strategies adopted allow for a high level of involvement with the audience. The discursive practices developed are a key element in the advancement of the Revolution and are in line with its beliefs and attitudes.Spanish and Portugues

Logistic networks modeling with inventory carrying costs calculated using inventory turnover
Inventory carrying cost has become very important in the analysis of the trade-offs and an important component to be considered when taking decisions about a logistic network. This paper proposes a methodology incorporated in a multi-echelon sourcing decision model, to be considered as a new version of the model presented in Hamad, Gualda (2008). It treats the carrying costs using the inventory Days-on-hand estimate in each echelon of the chain (plants and/or Distribution Centers). The main contributions of this methodology compared to other options found in the literature are the simplicity of its application, the consideration of all inventory costs (not only the ones related to the products being modeled) and, also, the inclusion of constraints related to warehousing capacity
