    Physical activity of children and adolescents who use a wheelchair: a systematic review

    AbstractPhysical activity has numerous health benefits for people with physical disabilities. Nevertheless, activity levels are often below recommended levels. To promote physical activity among children and adolescents who use a wheelchair as their primary source of mobility, this systematic review explores the physical activity patterns of this group. A systematic search of PubMed, Sports Medicine &amp; Education Index, Web of Science, and SPORTDiscus was performed, included articles were synthesized in terms of duration, intensity, and settings in which physical activity occurred, as well as the physical activity measurement methods. Nine articles were included. The mean overall physical activity level across the included studies was 98 minutes per day (range: 78–115 minutes per day). Two articles analysed the duration of physical activity at different intensities (very light physical activity, light physical activity (LPA), moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and intensities near to maximum). Within the included articles, both subjective and objective measurement methods were used. Due to the small number of articles, combined with small sample sizes, there is not enough evidence to answer the research questions sufficiently. Nevertheless, the review provides an overview of actual research and clearly shows that the physical activity values are insufficiently researched. There is a need for further research on the scope, types and settings of physical activity in the target group. </jats:p

    In vitro wound healing assays - State of the art

    Wound healing is essential for the restoration of the barrier function of the skin. During this process, cells at the wound edges proliferate and migrate, leading to re-epithelialization of the wound surface. Wound healing assays are used to study the molecular mechanisms of wound repair, as well as in the investigation of potential therapeutics and treatments for improved healing. Numerous models of wound healing have been developed in recent years. In this review, we focus on in vitro assays, as they allow a fast, cost-efficient and ethical alternative to animal models. This paper gives a general overview of 2-dimensional (2D) cell monolayer assays by providing a description of injury methods, as well as an evaluation of each assay's strengths and limitations. We include a section reviewing assays performed in 3-dimensional (3D) culture, which employ bioengineered skin models to capture complex wound healing mechanics like cell-matrix interactions and the interplay of different cell types in the healing process. Finally, we discuss in detail available software tools and algorithms for data analysis. © 2016 by De Gruyter

    Physical Activity and Outdoor Play of Children in Public Playground : Do Gender and Social Environment Matter?

    Background: Few studies have delved into the relationship of the social environment with children’s physical activity and outdoor play in public playgrounds by considering gender differences. The aim of the present study was to examine gender differences and the relationship of the social environment with children’s physical activity and outdoor play in public playgrounds. Methods: A quantitative, observational study was conducted at ten playgrounds in one district of a middle-sized town in Germany. The social environment, physical activity levels, and outdoor play were measured using a modified version of the System for Observing Play and Leisure Activity in Youth. Results: In total, 266 observations of children (117 girls/149 boys) between four and 12 years old were used in this analysis. Significant gender differences were found in relation to activity types, but not in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). The presence of active children was the main explanatory variable for MVPA. In the models stratified by gender, the presence of opposite-sex children was a significant negative predictor of MVPA in girls but not in boys. Conclusions: The presence of active children contributes to children’s physical activity levels in public playgrounds. Girls’ physical activity seems to be suppressed in the presence of boys

    Changes in Physical Activity during the COVID-19 Pandemic—An Analysis of Differences Based on Mitigation Policies and Incidence Values in the Federal States of Germany

    Measures to slow down the spread of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 have had an impact on the daily life and physical activity (PA) of many people. Nevertheless, in Germany, mitigation policies and incidence values vary widely across the federal states (Länder). Thus, the aim of the present study was to investigate regional differences in PA during the coronavirus pandemic. This study is based on the SPOVID project (Examining physical activity and sports behavior in the face of COVID-19 pandemic: a social inequality perspective) that incorporates a large-scale, representative cross-sectional survey representing the German population (≥14 years). Based on the survey that took place in October 2020 (N = 1477), we investigated the relationships between the COVID-19 incidence values as well as the mitigation policies across the federal states in Germany and changes in PA. Pearson correlations indicated a strong negative relationship between PA change and 7-day incidence values (r = −0.688 **, p = 0.009) and a moderate negative relationship between PA changes and an index of mitigation policies (r = −0.444, p = 0.112). Higher 7-day incidence values and stricter mitigation policies were associated with a stronger decline in PA levels. Therefore, it is important to support people to stay active even if there are restrictions. In particular, in federal states and regions with high incidences and stricter mitigation policies, measures to promote health-enhancing PA are necessary

    How to disseminate national recommendations for physical activity: a qualitative analysis of critical change agents in Germany

    Physical activity recommendations are reached by only a small part of the population. A common problem is that research findings on public health-related topics such as physical activity promotion are oftentimes not translated into practice. The involvement of relevant stakeholders, such as change agents (role models, decision-makers, and/or knowledge mediators), is a common strategy to implement physical activity recommendations in specific settings, as they have the necessary knowledge of contextual factors. However, dissemination and implementation of physical activity recommendations are often prevented by focusing exclusively on the health sector and by underestimating the individual perceptions and needs of change agents. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to address the problem of how physical activity recommendations can be translated into practice through comprehensive consideration of the situation and context of change agents from various sectors of society at different administrative levels. This allows for deriving recommendations for action on how a national dissemination strategy of physical activity recommendations should be designed. Methods Qualitative expert interviews were conducted with change agents from different sectors of society and administrative levels in Germany (N = 21). Case selection took place via a sampling plan. The interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analysed by two trained researchers using qualitative content analysis. Results The change agents’ perceived relevance of physical activity and physical activity promotion and their knowledge of physical activity recommendations varied across different sectors. Nine themes were identified covering the change agents’ needs for the implementation of physical activity recommendations: strengthening of political will and cooperation, availability of public space for physical activity, change in awareness and health education, professional qualification, financial incentives, development of physical activity-promoting programmes and structures, provision of resources, bridging the theory–practice gap, and knowledge of physical activity recommendations. Conclusions This exploratory study contributes to the development of an evidence-based dissemination strategy of physical activity recommendations involving change agents from various sectors. Cross-sectoral needs and obstacles were identified indicating gaps that have to be addressed. Future research should choose practice-oriented approaches to develop dissemination strategies that are adapted to the needs of local contexts

    Social Support and Modelling in Relation to Physical Activity Participation and Outdoor Play in Preschool Children

    Physical activity during early childhood is a prerequisite for healthy development in many cases. The aim of this study was to assess the relationships of social modelling and support from parents, peers, and siblings and domain-specific physical activity participation in a nationwide sample of preschool boys and girls from Germany. 519 preschool children aged 4–6 and one of their parents participated in the ‘MoMo’ Wave 1 Study between 2009 and 2012. Participants and their parents provided self-reported data on social support modelling, and domain-specific physical activity participation (physical activity in sports clubs, physical activity outside of sports clubs, and outdoor play). Parental, peer, and sibling support and modelling were related to domain-specific physical activity: Parental support was particularly relevant for physical activity in sports clubs, and peer support for outdoor play. Parental modelling was only related to physical activity outside of sports clubs: Maternal modelling was a positive correlate in girls and paternal modelling in boys, respectively. Sibling and peer modelling were especially relevant for physical activity in sports clubs. The results were heterogeneous regarding types and providers of support and modelling. Thus, different providers and types of support should be targeted in physical activity promotion programs for preschool children

    Scaling Up Physical Activity Promotion Projects on the Community Level for Women in Difficult Life Situations and Older People: BIG-5 and GET-10—A Study Protocol

    Introduction Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for a population's health, especially among socially disadvantaged groups. Many health promotion projects focus on increasing physical activity among their respective target groups. However, because they are mostly developed and implemented under laboratory conditions, they fail when being scaled to real-world settings. The community-based participatory research projects BIG and GESTALT have demonstrated their effectiveness regarding the physical activity promotion in real-world settings by employing a participatory method. Material and Analysis Within the context of the BIG-5 and GET-10 projects, these previously implemented and tested participatory projects are scaled to 15 additional settings in Bavaria, Germany. By applying an overarching mixed-methods evaluation framework, the aim is to gain insights into a) the recruitment of communities for scale-up; b) the specific results of the projects according to the RE-AIM framework. In the recruitment of communities, standardized information on the first contact, the consultation process, the person in charge, and previously implemented health promotion projects are collected. A systematic web search will complete information on each community and their health promotion activities. Results will be compared with information on those communities most in need, here according to the deprivation index of communities in Bavaria, Germany. The scale-up process and its results will be measured using semi-structured interviews with project coordinators. A standardized questionnaire will be used with the course's participants. Applying the RE-AIM framework, the collected data will be analyzed deductively. Discussion We expect the results to be highly relevant for the effective scale-up of any health promotion project. The study will enhance the understanding of how to reach those communities most in need of health promotion projects and will identify the barriers coordinators face in reaching socially disadvantaged groups. Conclusion Although participatory projects are often used as individual projects, little is known about the scaling up of participatory health promotion projects. This cross-cutting evaluation of two projects aims at producing data on the barriers and facilitators for the reach of settings most in need, and those success factors for a durable implementation

    Interventions Aiming to Promote Active Commuting in Children and Adolescents: An Evaluation From a Sex/Gender Perspective

    Active commuting (AC) provides numerous health benefits and is one way to improve physical activity in children and adolescents. Boys are more likely to use active transport modes than girls. Girls and boys benefit differently from interventions that promote AC. The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate the effects of interventions on girls and boys and to appraise the extent to which previous studies have taken sex/gender into account. Eleven electronic databases were searched to identify all relevant randomized and non-randomized controlled trials based on a priori defined eligibility criteria. Two independent reviewers screened the literature for eligibility and assessed risk of bias. Semiquantitative analyses were conducted to evaluate the effects of intervention effects by taking sex/gender aspects into account. To evaluate sex/gender considerations in interventional studies, a recently developed sex/gender checklist was applied. Twelve studies were included that examined intervention effects on AC in girls and boys. Three intervention studies showed significant effects in increasing AC, with one study favoring girls, one favoring boys, and another focusing on a single sex/gender (only girls). According to the checklist, the overall sex/gender rating highlighted a lack of information in sex/gender consideration. Studies with and without significant effects indicated no differences in the sex/gender checklist. The results indicate that sex/gender is not considered adequately in primary interventional research on AC. To evaluate the effectiveness of intervention in boys and girls, detailed analyses of sex/gender are required, and better reporting about sex/gender-specific intervention content is necessary. In future health research to promote AC, sex/gender should be systematically taken into account

    Associations of parents’ and adolescents’ active travel behavior across various destinations – a sex/gender analysis

    Abstract Background Active travel behavior such as walking and cycling is associated with several health benefits. Especially the family environment seems to be important for active travel in children and adolescents. Currently, little is known regarding travel behavior in leisure time and associations of travel behavior within parent-adolescent dyads. Methods The present analysis is based on the German ARRIVE study (Active tRavel behavioR in the famIly enVironmEnt), which incorporated a large scale, representative cross-sectional online survey including 517 parent–child dyads consisting of adolescents (N = 517; boys = 263, girls = 254) aged 11–15 years and one of their parents (N = 517; fathers = 259, mothers = 258). Based on that survey which took place in June 2021 (during the COVID-19 pandemic), we calculated the prevalence of active travel to four commonly visited destinations (school/work, friends/relatives, shopping stores and recreational activities) using an adapted version of the travel to school questionnaire by Segura-Diaz JM, Rojas-Jimenez A, Barranco-Ruiz Y, Murillo-Pardo B, Saucedo-Araujo RG, Aranda-Balboa MJ, et al. (Int J Environ Res Public Health 17(14), 2020). In addition, we investigated the associations between parents’ and adolescents’ travel behavior using scores for school/work, leisure time (friends/relatives, shopping stores and recreational activities) and overall (school/work and leisure time). Results Across all destinations, prevalence of active travel in adolescents (63.08%) was higher than in parents (29.21%). Active travel to school (47.33%) as well as to work (20.43%) indicated the lowest prevalence. Linear regression models revealed significant associations in overall active travel between mothers and adolescents (girls: β = 0.308, p &lt; 0.001; boys: β = 0.302, p = 0.001) and in leisure time active travel behavior between mothers and daughters (β = 0.316, p &lt; 0.001). Related to school/work active travel there were no associations between parents and adolescents. Conclusion The associations between adolescents’ and parents’ travel behavior differ depending on gender: they are solely seen in mother-adolescents dyads. Furthermore, our findings conclude that travel is a routine and independent of the destination. </jats:sec

    Active travel behaviour in the family environment: protocol for the mixed-methods cross-sectional ARRIVE study

    IntroductionActive travel is an important source of physical activity and a primary contributor to overall health among adolescents. To understand and promote active travel behaviour in adolescents, developing a more robust understanding of the predictors of active travel and its associated decision-making processes is needed. Situated within a theoretical socioecological framework for adolescent travel behaviour, the mixed-methods Active tRavel behavioR in the famIly enVironmEnt study aims to quantitatively assess the influence of several predictors of adolescent travel behaviour, and to qualitatively understand the associated decision-making processes of both adolescents and parents.Methods and analysisOur mixed-methods approach will feature online surveys and semistructured interviews. The online questionnaire, developed in accordance with a theoretical framework of adolescent active travel, will examine adolescent travel behaviour with respect to four different destinations while controlling for multiple relevant individual, social and physical environment factors. To enable the comparison of adolescent and parental perspectives, the questionnaire will be answered by a representative sample of German adolescents (11–15 years old) and their parents.Our semistructured interviews, likewise framed based on the central tenets of the theoretical framework of adolescent active travel, will seek to explore the decision-making process of families regarding travel mode choice via conducting interviews with each member (ie, father, mother, adolescent). To investigate travel decision-making processes, adolescents and their parents will be invited to talk about trips they undertook using both active and passive transport modes during the last week. Thematic analyses will be conducted to highlight the central concerns, priorities and values of participants’ decision-making processes.Ethics and disseminationThis study has received ethical approval from the ethics commission of the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg. Study results will be disseminated at scientific conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, study findings will be made publicly available to relevant health, policy, and research stakeholders and groups
