    Modeling Klein tunneling and caustics of electron waves in graphene

    We employ the tight-binding propagation method to study Klein tunneling and quantum interference in large graphene systems. With this efficient numerical scheme, we model the propagation of a wave packet through a potential barrier and determine the tunneling probability for different incidence angles. We consider both sharp and smooth potential barriers in n-p-n and n-n' junctions and find good agreement with analytical and semiclassical predictions. When we go outside the Dirac regime, we observe that sharp n-p junctions no longer show Klein tunneling because of intervalley scattering. However, this effect can be suppressed by considering a smooth potential. Klein tunneling holds for potentials changing on the scale much larger than the interatomic distance. When the energies of both the electrons and holes are above the Van Hove singularity, we observe total reflection for both sharp and smooth potential barriers. Furthermore, we consider caustic formation by a two-dimensional Gaussian potential. For sufficiently broad potentials we find a good agreement between the simulated wave density and the classical electron trajectories.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figure

    Grey seal tracking reveals different behaviours of resident and transient population components

    Grey seals recently recolonised the Dutch coasts. The exponential population growth is fuelled by immigrating grey seals from the UK, who subsequently breed in the Netherlands. In addition, population survey data suggested that a number of grey seals use the Dutch area to forage, but return to the UK to breed. Although such population surveys can provide insight into discrepancies and regional imbalances in the number of seals observed on land, the data are insufficient to measure the actual underlying migration processes. Using an extensive data set on individually tracked grey seals, we study the movement of grey seals in relation to where they forage and breed. The tracked seals of different age and sex classes were recognised to be either resident or transient based on where they went during and outside the breeding season. The grey seals breeding in the Netherlands also only haul-out in the Netherlands throughout the period between the moult and next breeding season. Only animals that bred elsewhere (respectively 50% of the adult females and 67% of the adult males tracked in this study) visited regions other than Dutch waters during the rest of the year. Some however, remained in Dutch waters continuously between the breeding trips to other countries. The tracking data suggest a higher number of grey seals might be visiting the Dutch waters than was estimated in a population analysis based on aerial surveys. These results might also have consequences for the population modelling used to estimate the grey seal population size in the UK. As eastern Atlantic grey seals in the North Sea are a mixed meta-population, coordinated, international collaborations are needed to assess their status and trends. Since transient seals might be driven by intraspecific competition, ecological studies on for example, the role of grey seals as a top predator, need to consider the entire North Sea grey seal population

    Optical investigation of thermoelectric topological crystalline insulator Pb0.77_{0.77}Sn0.23_{0.23}Se

    Pb0.77_{0.77}Sn0.23_{0.23}Se is a novel alloy of two promising thermoelectric materials PbSe and SnSe that exhibits a temperature dependent band inversion below 300 K. Recent work has shown that this band inversion also coincides with a trivial to nontrivial topological phase transition. To understand how the properties critical to thermoelectric efficiency are affected by the band inversion, we measured the broadband optical response of Pb0.77_{0.77}Sn0.23_{0.23}Se as a function of temperature. We find clear optical evidence of the band inversion at 160±15160\pm15 K, and use the extended Drude model to accurately determine a T3/2T^{3/2} dependence of the bulk carrier lifetime, associated with electron-acoustic phonon scattering. Due to the high bulk carrier doping level, no discriminating signatures of the topological surface states are found, although their presence cannot be excluded from our data.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure

    European harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) populations decreased substantially during the phocine distemper virus (PDV) outbreaks of 1988 and 2002. Different hypotheses have stated that various seals and terrestrial carnivore species might be the source of infection. To further analyse these hypotheses, grey (Halichoerus grypus) and ringed (Phoca hispida) seals, polar bears (Ursus maritimus) and minks (Mustela lutreola) were sampled from the North Sea and East Greenland coasts between 1988 and 2004 and investigated by RT-PCR using a panmorbillivirus primer pair.     Occurrence and profiles of PCBs and PBDEs in harbour seals and harbour porpoises from the southern North Sea

    Harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoen) and harbour seals (Phoca vitulina), two representative top coastal pollution. Concentrations of sum PCBs were 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than concentrations of sum PBDEs (with median values of 23.1 μg.g- lw (lipid weight) and 12.4 μ.g-1 lw for sum PCBs and 0.33 μ.g- lw and 0.76 μ.g-1 lw for sum PBDEs in harbour seals and harbour porpoises respectively) and were highly dependent of age group and gender. For both species, the highest PCB concentrations were observed in adult males as the result of accumulation for years and years, while the highest PBDE concentrations were measured in juveniles probably due to better developed metabolic capacities for these congeners with age in adults. Results for PCBs were higher than observations in harbour seals and porpoises from other areas, while results for PBDEs were comparable indicating that the North Sea is a highly contaminated area. Relative PCB and PBDE profiles were constructed to compare metabolic capacities between harbour seals and porpoises. A higher contribution of lower chlorinated and nonpersistent congeners, such as CB 52, CB 95, CB 101, CB 118 and CB 149 indicated that harbour porpoises are unable to metabolize these compounds. Similar to PCBs, higher contributions of other PBDEs than BDE 47 were observed in harbour porpoises, suggesting that this species has difficulties to metabolize these congeners. In contrast, harbour seals showed a higher ability to metabolize PCBs and PBDEs
