    Numerous levels of concepts perform logical designand logical representations in an efficient manner. In typical and quantum theories of computation, Binary logic and Boolean algebra occupies an imperative place. But they havethe limitation of representing signals or sequences by using either binary ‘1’ or ‘0’. This has major drawbacks that the neutralities or any intermediate values are ignored which are essential in most of the applications. Because of the occurrence of such situations it is the need of the hour to look into other alternative logics in order to fulfill the necessities of the user in their respective applications. The binary logic can be replaced by Multi-Valued Logic (MVL), which grabs the positions of the major applications because of the ability to provide representation by using more than two values.As most of the significant applications are based on the logical sequences, the multi-valued logic shines because of its thriving feature. Genomic signal processing, a novel research area in bioinformatics,is one of the foremost applications which involve the operations of logical sequences. It is concerned with the digital signal representations and analysis of genomic data.Determination of the coding region in DNA sequence is one of the genomic operations.This leads to the identification of the characteristics of the gene which in turn finds out an individual’s behavior. In order to extract the coding regions on the basis of logical sequences a number of techniques have been proposed by researchers. But most of the works utilized binary logic, which lead to the problem of losing some of the coding regions and incorrectly recognizing non-coding regions as the coding regions. Hereby,we are proposing an approach for recognizing the exon regions from a gene sequence based on the multi-valued logic. In this approach, we have utilized fourlevel logical system, termed as quaternary logic for the representation of gene sequences and so that we recognize theexon regions from the DNA sequence

    Prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency among individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus in a South Indian rural community

    Background: To estimate the prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency in a rural south Indian community and to evaluate the association between metformin use and prevalent vitamin B12 deficiency in people with T2DM stratified by oral vitamin B12 supplementation.Methods: Using a cross sectional study design, a random sample of people with T2DM (N=438) was recruited from a rural community. Vitamin B12 deficiency was defined as serum B12 ≤200pg/ml. Data on metformin dose, duration of use, oral vitamin B12 supplementation, and diet were collected. Laboratory measurements included complete blood count, tests for hepatic, renal, and thyroid function, as well as serum vitamin B12 levels and HbA1c.Results: The prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency in people with T2DM was 11.2% (95% Confidence Interval (CI) 8.2%-14.1%). The odds of vitamin B12 deficiency in patients receiving a metformin dose of 2 grams/day were 4 times higher compared to those receiving ≤1 gram/day, after adjusting for oral B12 supplementation (odds ratio 4.2;95% CI 1.5-11.8). The odds of vitamin B12 deficiency in those taking metformin and receiving oral vitamin B12 supplementation were lower compared to those on metformin and not receiving vitamin B12 supplementation (adjusted odds ratio 0.20; 95% CI 0.06-0.70).Conclusions: Vitamin B12 deficiency affects 1 in 10 people with T2DM, is associated with higher dose metformin use, and oral vitamin B12 supplementation mitigates B12 deficiency in this group

    Implementation of TCP Congestion Control mechanism for Wireless Networks using TCP Reserved Field and Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR)

    TCP is the most popular and widely used network transmission protocol. All most 90% of the Internet connections make use of TCP for communication. TCP is reliable for wired networks and it considers all packet timeouts in wired networks as due to network congestion and not because of bit errors. However, TCP suffers from performance degradation over error-prone wireless links, as it has no technique to distinguish error deficits from congestion deficits, with networking becoming more divergent, with wired and wireless topologies. It considers all packet deficits are due to congestion and subsequently reduces the packet burst transmission, at the same time decreasing the network throughput. In this paper a new TCP congestion control mechanism is proposed that is suitable and applicable for wireless and also for wired networks and is capable of distinguishing congestion deficits from error deficits. The proposed technique uses the reserved field of the TCP header to indicate whether the connection established is over a wired or a wireless link. Further, the proposed technique influences the usage of Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) to discover the reliability of the link and determine whether to decrease the packet burst or retransmit the timed-out packet. Investigations performed, revealed that the proposed mechanism confirmed to function amend in circumstances where timeouts were due to error and not due to congestion. Further, the future work can be enhanced upon the proposed mechanism so that it can leverage Cyclic Redundancy Check(CRC) and Header Error Check(HEC) errors so that it can be properly determined the reason for initializing transmission timeouts in wireless networks.

    Studies on atmospheric gravity wave activity in the troposphere and lower stratosphere over a tropical station at Gadanki

    MST radars are powerful tools to study the mesosphere, stratosphere and troposphere and have made considerable contributions to the studies of the dynamics of the upper, middle and lower atmosphere. Atmospheric gravity waves play a significant role in controlling middle and upper atmospheric dynamics. To date, frontal systems, convection, wind shear and topography have been thought to be the sources of gravity waves in the troposphere. All these studies pointed out that it is very essential to understand the generation, propagation and climatology of gravity waves. In this regard, several campaigns using Indian MST Radar observations have been carried out to explore the gravity wave activity over Gadanki in the troposphere and the lower stratosphere. The signatures of the gravity waves in the wind fields have been studied in four seasons viz., summer, monsoon, post-monsoon and winter. The large wind fluctuations were more prominent above 10 km during the summer and monsoon seasons. The wave periods are ranging from 10 min-175 min. The power spectral densities of gravity waves are found to be maximum in the stratospheric region. The vertical wavelength and the propagation direction of gravity waves were determined using hodograph analysis. The results show both down ward and upward propagating waves with a maximum vertical wave length of 3.3 km. The gravity wave associated momentum fluxes show that long period gravity waves carry more momentum flux than the short period waves and this is presented

    In the vast oceanic microbial environment of 2468.83km 2, GIS modeling techniques involving sixty query steps, enabled the deciphering of Microenvironments as low as 1.19km 2 to 38.6 km 2 for the summer of 2004 and in case of summer 2005 where 84 query steps were involved to decipher Microenvironments of 10.55km 2 to 25.94km 2. Thirtythree sampling stations were established between Betul to Ankola off the central west coast of India accounting for a spatial coverage of 2468.83km 2. GIS query-modeling investigation was carried out using spatial layers of depth, optical parameters (k-Irradiance attenuation Coefficient, c-Beam attenuation coefficient), sediment size parameters (Sediment Mean Size and Sediment Sorting) and Benthic Foraminifera Suborders (Rotaliina, Textulariina, Miliolina, Lagenina). Foraminifera have been used as a surrogate parameter. However, any microbial parameter could proxy for foraminifers providing for the numerical deciphering of microenvironments. This is suggestive of the assimilation of GIS technology for a better appreciation of microbial oceanography

These services are implemented within the different components of a Smart City, helping city administrators to improve the life of the citizens, addressing different service, security and administrative challenges. The objective of this paper is to explore and determine how three well-known cities - Nice, Palo Alto and Stockholm - implemented the Smart City concept. The study indicates that a successful implementation of a Smart City model requires addressing a number of critical challenges: citizen involvement, business collaboration and strong leadership prove to be key success factors in the Smart City development process

    TCF7L2 gene polymorphisms do not predict susceptibility to diabetes in tropical calcific pancreatitis but may interact with SPINK1 and CTSB mutations in predicting diabetes

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Tropical calcific pancreatitis (TCP) is a type of chronic pancreatitis unique to developing countries in tropical regions and one of its important features is invariable progression to diabetes, a condition called fibro-calculous pancreatic diabetes (FCPD), but the nature of diabetes in TCP is controversial. We analysed the recently reported type 2 diabetes (T2D) associated polymorphisms in the <it>TCF7L2 </it>gene using a case-control approach, under the hypothesis that <it>TCF7L2 </it>variants should show similar association if diabetes in FCPD is similar to T2D. We also investigated the interaction between the <it>TCF7L2 </it>variants and N34S <it>SPINK1 </it>and L26V <it>CTSB </it>mutations, since they are strong predictors of risk for TCP.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Two polymorphisms rs7903146 and rs12255372 in the <it>TCF7L2 </it>gene were analyzed by direct sequencing in 478 well-characterized TCP patients and 661 healthy controls of Dravidian and Indo-European ethnicities. Their association with TCP with diabetes (FCPD) and without diabetes was tested in both populations independently using chi-square test. Finally, a meta analysis was performed on all the cases and controls for assessing the overall significance irrespective of ethnicity. We dichotomized the whole cohort based on the presence or absence of N34S <it>SPINK1 </it>and L26V <it>CTSB </it>mutations and further subdivided them into TCP and FCPD patients and compared the distribution of <it>TCF7L2 </it>variants between them.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The allelic and genotypic frequencies for both <it>TCF7L2 </it>polymorphisms, did not differ significantly between TCP patients and controls belonging to either of the ethnic groups or taken together. No statistically significant association of the SNPs was observed with TCP or FCPD or between carriers and non-carriers of N34S <it>SPINK1 </it>and L26V <it>CTSB </it>mutations. The minor allele frequency for rs7903146 was different between TCP and FCPD patients carrying the N34S <it>SPINK1 </it>variant but did not reach statistical significance (OR = 1.59, 95% CI = 0.93–2.70, P = 0.09), while, <it>TCF7L2</it><it/>variant showed a statistically significant association between TCP and FCPD patients carrying the 26V allele (OR = 1.69, 95% CI = 1.11–2.56, P = 0.013).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Type 2 diabetes associated <it>TCF7L2 </it>variants are not associated with diabetes in TCP. Since, <it>TCF7L2 </it>is a major susceptibility gene for T2D, it may be hypothesized that the diabetes in TCP patients may not be similar to T2D. Our data also suggests that co-existence of <it>TCF7L2 </it>variants and the <it>SPINK1 </it>and <it>CTSB </it>mutations, that predict susceptibility to exocrine damage, may interact to determine the onset of diabetes in TCP patients.</p
