With the increasing demand for fish as human food, aquaculture both in freshwater and salt water is rapidly developing over the world. In the developing countries, fishes are being raised as food. In many countries fish farming is a very important economic activity. The most recent branch, mariculture, has shown advances in raising fishes in brackish, estuarine and bay waters, in which marine, anadromous and catadromous fishes have successfully been grown and maintained

The snails were exposed to various concentrations of cadmium at two different temperatures and salinities. The tolerance experiments were also conducted with medium and small sized snails. Mortality rates increased with increasing cadmium concentration at all the different parameters studied. At ambient temperature(29°C) and salinity (32%), the LC50 of 6.1844 ppm was obtained for 96 hr when the medium-size snails were exposed to different concentrations. The LC50 values of 0.3629 and 0.0577 ppm obtained at low (25°C) and high (33 °C) temperatures respectively were found to be significantly (P < 0.05) lower than that of ambient temperature. Similarly, low LC50 values of 1.154 and 0.3722 ppm were observed at low (20%o) and high (35%o) salinities respectively. The small size animals showed LC50 value of 2.774 ppm, which is significantly lower (P <0.05 ) than that of the medium sized snails. The results clearly demonstrated that the toxicity of cadmium changes with size and environmental variables in T. intercostalis.</span

Alongshore wind stress and heat flux divergence off Visakhapatnam, east coast of India

18-21Annual variation of heat flux divergence (Qv) was computed for the coastal waters of Visakhapatnam. The mean values of net heat exchange (Qn) and heat flux divergence (Qv) were found to be 114 and 115 W.m-2 respectively on annual scale. The net heat storage in the water column is almost negligible. The winds and currents in the study area are favourable for upwelling during premonsoon and SW monsoon seasons. This resulted in large divergence of heat from the region

82-86Analysis of the thermal structure in coastal waters off Visakhapatnam revealed sub-surface inversions during October. In postmonsoon, a good association existed between wind stress (tau) and total heat loss (Qe + Qs) and between SST and heat content (H) on diurnal scale. Horizontal eddy diffusion coefficient (Kx) estimated from the horizontal advection equation was 3 x 10(4) cm(2) . s(-1) during October. During February 1993, surface currents had magnitudes of 105-126 cm . s(-1) and the now was towards north-east

Reliability studies on Si PIN photodiodes under Co-60 gamma radiation

Silicon PIN photodiodes were fabricated with 250 nm SiO2 antireflective coating (ARC). The changes in the electrical characteristics, capacitance-voltage characteristics and spectral response after gamma irradiation are systematically studied to estimate the radiation tolerance up to 10 Mrad. The different characteristics studied in this investigation demonstrate that Si PIN photodiodes are suitable for high radiation environment
