    THE CALLA-BASED ELENA MODEL FOR LINGUISTICS: DOES IT WORK?

    This paper is aimed to describe the implementation of the CALLA-based ELENA model for introduction to linguistics course in the English Department of Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES). The research was conducted through descriptive analysis. The analysis of data is the impact of the implementation of the model for the Introduction to linguistics course. Data of the study were collected through observation, questionnaires, and tests.   The result of the study shows that using the model can provide the learners' comprehension in learning linguistics concepts.   Further, that model has emerged as one of the alternative modes of instruction delivery in the concept of linguistics. This research finding can be used to review current online learning model trends and to explore potential research directions

    Tale is the folklore in the form of poem that is sung. This study aims to gain in-depth understanding of the structure of Tale poem in the release of the Kerinci pilgrims. This qualitative study employed content analysis as the method with a structural approach. This study discussed the structure of the Tale poem. The results of the study are Tale poem consists of sampiran phrase, the rhyme/ sound phrase, and content. It composed by ten lines to twenty lines.     ENHANCING THE PRONUNCIATION OF ENGLISH SUPRASEGMENTAL FEATURES THROUGH REFLECTIVE LEARNING METHOD

    Suprasegmentals are of paramount importance in spoken English. Yet, these pronunciation features are marginalised in EFL/ESL teaching-learning. This article deals with a study through reflective learning method and That aims to describe the increase in supramental english skill find out if the improvements achieved in the english pronounciation. Kemmis and Taggart’s model of action research was adopted. The study involved twenty-four undergraduate students at Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto, Indonesia. The investigation contained two cycles, each of which comprised three sessions. Data were gathered through observation, recorded conversation, diary, interview, and test. Overall, the study has shown that reflective method using video integrated into communicative activities enhanced student involvement in learning the pronunciation of English suprasegmentals. Students got involved in monitoring and evaluating their own learning. In addition, a majority of the students gave positive response to the instruction. Level of pronunciation mastery rose sharply from only 4.16% of students passing the test in the pre-intervention (baseline) to 65.21% in first cycle, and 73.9% in second cycle. Most students’ pronunciation to some degree sounded “more Englishâ€

    The problem in this research is the incompatibility of teaching materials used with the needs of students and teachers of Indonesian class VII. Teaching materials should contain four language competencies, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing in an integrative manner. In addition, Indonesian language learning should integrate with literature, culture, and religion. Thus, the demands of the 2013 curriculum that synergize between the core competencies 1 (KI 1) in the form of spiritual competence, Core Competence 2 (KI 2) in the form of social competence, Core 3 Competence (KI 3) in the form of knowledge competence, and Core Competence 4 (KI 4) in the form of skill competence can be done. For that, one solution is to display the story in the Qur'an as a raw material for learning Indonesian. Not just learners, parents also like the story. This paper offers how the story in the Qur'an can be the source text in Indonesian Language learning. In addition, the discussion in this paper also links various subjects. All of that is put together under one theme. Through the story in the Qur'an with CLIL approach Indonesian learning will be more interesting, actual, and dynamic because the story in the Qur'an is a true story that at the same time can teach the noble character.     THE LIFE STRUGGLEOF FEMALE CHARACTERS IN THE NOVELSOF ABIDAH EL KHALIEQY

    This study aimed to obtain a deep picture and understanding of the life struggle of female characters in the novel written by Abidah El Khalieqy. The research design used was descriptive qualitative with feminism approach. The data in this research were the study results of the novel documents of Perempuan Berkalung Sorban and Geni Jora by Abidah El Khalieqy in the form of words, sentences in the form of utterances, description of figures and inter-character dialogues indicating the  existence of feminism that happened to the analyzed figures of the novel. The procedure in analyzing research data was content analysis. The data validity analysis utilized triangulation technique. Based on the results of research and discussion, it was found that the struggles to fight the injustice among them were the struggle against: 1) marginalization of women; 2) subordination to women; 3) stereotypes about women; and 4) violence against women, including the struggle against physical, sexual and psychological violence; and 5) the struggle against women'sworkload

    The Effect of Learning Model and Creative Thinking Ability on Students' Recount Writing Skill

    The aim of the study is to find out the effect of learning model and creative thinking ability on students' recount writing skill. It was an experimental study with 2x2 factorial design and analysed using two-factor ANOVA at 0.05 significance level. The sample was 32 students and divided into two groups, namely experiment and control. The data were collected using recount writing test in English and creative thinking ability test. The research finding showed: (1) the students' recount writing skill taught by project-based learning model was higher than by genre-based learning model, (2) there was interaction between learning model and creative thinking ability on students' recount writing skill, (3) the students' recount writing skill with high creative thinking ability taught by project-based learning model was higher than those by genre-based learning model, and (4) the students' recount writing skill with low creative thinking ability taught by project-based learning model was lower than those by genre-based learning model

    This research aimed to explain the way and culture of utterances in wedding proposal ceremony in Minangkabau. This research was qualitative research using ethnography of communication method. The findings of the research can be described as follow. First is the negotiation using turn taking in own initiative. However before the agreement was taken using own initiative, the discussion need to be done. The culture of discussion is the culture of Minangkabau society to get an agreement. It is because the decision made will give effect to other family members. Second is negotiation that always used in direct utterance in form of declarative utterance. Third is negotiation that always used in indirect utterance in form of declarative and imperative utterance. Indirect utterance was the utterance that mostly used. This is related with the culture of Minangkabau society that has intrinsic meaning

    Breaking the Secrets behind the Polyglots: How Do They Acquire Many Languages?

    In this study, participants acquired three types of language, those are regional, national and foreign ones. The purpose of this research was to explore how Indonesian polyglots acquire several different languages. We collected data through demographic questionnaires and semi-structured interviews obtained from nine participants. Four salient themes and sub-themes that emerged in this research were (a) mastering languages through instructed learning (learning in formal educational institution and learning in informal educational institution), (b) gaining extra amounts of languages input beyond the classroom (getting more access to a national language environment and getting more access to foreign languages environment), (c) learning languages autonomously (self-directed learning through printed resources and self-directed learning through media and technology), and (d) acculturating with a new language group in society. The findings indicated that the polyglots acquired several different languages through a natural process, a learning process, and a mixture of both naturalistic as well as instructed experiences

    The Effect of Learning Model and Self Regulated Learning towards Students’ English Writing Skill

    This research aimed to find out the effect of learning model and self-regulated learning toward English writing skill. It was an experimental study by using treatment by level 2 x 2 design. The population was the first year students with the sample was 32 students. The data were collected through the questionnaire of self-regulated learning and the test of English writing skill. The data were analyzed by two way ANOVA and Tukey test. The result of the data analysis showed that (1) the students’ English writing skill who were taught by using hybrid learning was higher than the writing skill students’ score who were taught by using face-to-face learning; (2) there was an interaction effect between hybrid learning model and self-regulated learning toward English writing skill; (3) the students’ English writing skill who were taught by using hybrid learning was higher than the writing skill students’ score who were taught by using face-to-face learning for group of students who have higher self-regulated learning; (4) the students’ English writing skill who were taught by using face-to-face learning was higher than the writing skill students’ score who were taught by using hybrid learning for group of students who have low self-regulated learning

    Critical Discourse Analysis 0n Ideology 0f Feminism in Nawāl Al-Sa’adāwi’s Mudzakkirāt Thobībah

    The aim of this research is to carry out a critical discourse analysis on the ideology of feminism  in the novel  Mudzakkirāt Thobībah by Nawāl Al-Sa’adāwī, through linguistic feature in the symbol of sound, vocabulary and text structure or the dialog contained in the novel. This research utilizes qualitative approach with content analysis method of Philipp Mayring. Data is collected by way of reading the novel, identifying, marking, classifying and interpreting meaning. The findings are 1) patriarchal sound symbols because of the existence of  non (nir)-sound in Nawāl Al-Sa’adāwī’s Mudzakkirāt Thobībah linguistic feature. They can be identified as patriarchal because the text is commonly read by men due to minimum access of education for women. Women are illiterate and experience oppression in education. There is almost no information about women figure that become a linguist, scientists and including female scholars. 2) the inequality of antonym and synonym. The word relation and series word by word (word) is ideologically unequal. The words that are used for women are not culturally conditioned as a partner to men. 3) The hegemony of power in the structure of texts in the form of dialog among the characters. In the texts the harmonious and disharmonious dialogs are reciprocal. From the result of this research, the researchers recommend a newly designed curriculum for education to carry out advocacy for the awareness linguistic feminist education with the character of the East and Indonesia
