Multi-lepton signals from the top-prime quark at the LHC
We analyze the collider signatures of models with a vector-like top-prime
quark and a massive color-octet boson. The top-prime quark mixes with the top
quark in the Standard Model, leading to richer final states than ones that are
investigated by experimental collaborations. We discuss the multi-lepton final
states, and show that they can provide increased sensitivity to models with a
top-prime quark and gluon-prime. Searches for new physics in high multiplicity
events are an important component of the LHC program and complementary to
analyses that have been performed.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 2 table
Pleosporales
One hundred and five generic types of Pleosporales are described and illustrated. A brief introduction and detailed history with short notes on morphology, molecular phylogeny as well as a general conclusion of each genus are provided. For those genera where the type or a representative specimen is unavailable, a brief note is given. Altogether 174 genera of Pleosporales are treated. Phaeotrichaceae as well as Kriegeriella, Zeuctomorpha and Muroia are excluded from Pleosporales. Based on the multigene phylogenetic analysis, the suborder Massarineae is emended to accommodate five families, viz. Lentitheciaceae, Massarinaceae, Montagnulaceae, Morosphaeriaceae and Trematosphaeriaceae
Low Scale Flavor Gauge Symmetries
We study the possibility of gauging the Standard Model flavor group. Anomaly
cancellation leads to the addition of fermions whose mass is inversely
proportional to the known fermion masses. In this case all flavor violating
effects turn out to be controlled roughly by the Standard Model Yukawa,
suppressing transitions for the light generations. Due to the inverted
hierarchy the scale of new gauge flavor bosons could be as low as the
electroweak scale without violating any existing bound but accessible at the
Tevatron and the LHC. The mechanism of flavor protection potentially provides
an alternative to Minimal Flavor Violation, with flavor violating effects
suppressed by hierarchy of scales rather than couplings.Comment: 24 pages + appendices; v2) Refs. added and numerical examples

Caspase cleavage of the Golgi stacking factor GRASP65 is required for Fas/CD95-mediated apoptosis
GRASP65 (Golgi reassembly and stacking protein of 65 KDa) is a cis-Golgi protein with roles in Golgi structure, membrane trafficking and cell signalling. It is cleaved by caspase-3 early in apoptosis, promoting Golgi fragmentation. We now show that cleavage is needed for Fas-mediated apoptosis: expression of caspase-resistant GRASP65 protects cells, whereas expression of membrane proximal caspase-cleaved GRASP65 fragments dramatically sensitises cells. GRASP65 coordinates passage through the Golgi apparatus of proteins containing C-terminal hydrophobic motifs, via its tandem PDZ type ‘GRASP' domains. Fas/CD95 contains a C-terminal leucine–valine pairing so its trafficking might be coordinated by GRASP65. Mutagenesis of the Fas/CD95 LV motif reduces the number of cells with Golgi-associated Fas/CD95, and generates a receptor that is more effective at inducing apoptosis; however, siRNA-mediated silencing or expression of mutant GRASP65 constructs do not alter the steady state distribution of Fas/CD95. We also find no evidence for a GRASP65–Fas/CD95 interaction at the molecular level. Instead, we find that the C-terminal fragments of GRASP65 produced following caspase cleavage are targeted to mitochondria, and ectopic expression of these sensitises HeLa cells to Fas ligand. Our data suggest that GRASP65 cleavage promotes Fas/CD95-mediated apoptosis via release of C-terminal fragments that act at the mitochondria, and we identify Bcl-XL as a candidate apoptotic binding partner for GRASP65
Developmental effects on sleep–wake patterns in infants receiving a cow’s milk-based infant formula with an added prebiotic blend: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Background
Few studies have evaluated nutritive effects of prebiotics on infant behavior state, physiology, or metabolic status.
Methods
In this double-blind randomized study, infants (n = 161) received cow’s milk-based infant formula (Control) or similar formula with an added prebiotic blend (polydextrose and galactooligosaccharides [PDX/GOS]) from 14–35 to 112 days of age. Infant wake behavior (crying/fussing, awake/content) and 24-h sleep–wake actograms were analyzed (Baseline, Days 70 and 112). Salivary cortisol was immunoassayed (Days 70 and 112). In a subset, exploratory stool 16S ribosomal RNA-sequencing was analyzed (Baseline, Day 112).
Results
One hundred and thirty-one infants completed the study. Average duration of crying/fussing episodes was similar at Baseline, significantly shorter for PDX/GOS vs. Control at Day 70, and the trajectory continued at Day 112. Latency to first and second nap was significantly longer for PDX/GOS vs. Control at Day 112. Cortisol awakening response was demonstrated at Days 70 and 112. Significant stool microbiome beta-diversity and individual taxa abundance differences were observed in the PDX/GOS group.
Conclusions
Results indicate faster consolidation of daytime waking state in infants receiving prebiotics and support home-based actigraphy to assess early sleep–wake patterns. A prebiotic effect on wake organization is consistent with influence on the gut–brain axis and warrants further investigation.
Impact
Few studies have evaluated nutritive effects of prebiotics on infant behavior state, cortisol awakening response, sleep–wake entrainment, and gut microbiome.
Faster consolidation of daytime waking state was demonstrated in infants receiving a prebiotic blend in infant formula through ~4 months of age.
Shorter episodes of crying were demonstrated at ~2 months of age (time point corresponding to age/developmental range associated with peak crying) in infants receiving formula with added prebiotics.
Results support home-based actigraphy as a suitable method to assess early sleep–wake patterns.
Prebiotic effect on wake organization is consistent with influence on the gut–brain axis and warrants further investigation
The Cosmology of Composite Inelastic Dark Matter
Composite dark matter is a natural setting for implementing inelastic dark
matter - the O(100 keV) mass splitting arises from spin-spin interactions of
constituent fermions. In models where the constituents are charged under an
axial U(1) gauge symmetry that also couples to the Standard Model quarks, dark
matter scatters inelastically off Standard Model nuclei and can explain the
DAMA/LIBRA annual modulation signal. This article describes the early Universe
cosmology of a minimal implementation of a composite inelastic dark matter
model where the dark matter is a meson composed of a light and a heavy quark.
The synthesis of the constituent quarks into dark mesons and baryons results in
several qualitatively different configurations of the resulting dark matter
hadrons depending on the relative mass scales in the system.Comment: 31 pages, 4 figures; references added, typos correcte
Initial Solution Heuristic for Portfolio Optimization of Electricity Markets Participation
Meta-heuristic search methods are used to find near optimal global solutions for difficult optimization problems. These meta-heuristic processes usually require some kind of knowledge to overcome the local optimum locations. One way to achieve diversification is to start the search procedure from a solution already obtained through another method. Since this solution is already validated the algorithm will converge easily to a greater global solution. In this work, several well-known meta-heuristics are used to solve the problem of electricity markets participation portfolio optimization. Their search performance is compared to the performance of a proposed hybrid method (ad-hoc heuristic to generate the initial solution, which is combined with the search method). The addressed problem is the portfolio optimization for energy markets participation, where there are different markets where it is possible to negotiate. In this way the result will be the optimal allocation of electricity in the different markets in order to obtain the maximum return quantified through the objective function. This work has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement No 641794 (project DREAM-GO) and from FEDER Funds through COMPETE program and from National Funds through FCT under the project UID/EEA/00760/2013.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The Impact of Flavour Changing Neutral Gauge Bosons on B->X_s gamma
The branching ratio of the rare decay B->X_s gamma provides potentially
strong constraints on models beyond the Standard Model. Considering a general
scenario with new heavy neutral gauge bosons, present in particular in Z' and
gauge flavour models, we point out two new contributions to the B->X_s gamma
decay. The first one originates from one-loop diagrams mediated by gauge bosons
and heavy exotic quarks with electric charge -1/3. The second contribution
stems from the QCD mixing of neutral current-current operators generated by
heavy neutral gauge bosons and the dipole operators responsible for the B->X_s
gamma decay. The latter mixing is calculated here for the first time. We
discuss general sum rules which have to be satisfied in any model of this type.
We emphasise that the neutral gauge bosons in question could also significantly
affect other fermion radiative decays as well as non-leptonic two-body B
decays, epsilon'/epsilon, anomalous (g-2)_mu and electric dipole moments.Comment: 31 pages, 5 figures; version published on JHEP; added magic QCD

Yukawa Unification and the Superpartner Mass Scale
Naturalness in supersymmetry (SUSY) is under siege by increasingly stringent
LHC constraints, but natural electroweak symmetry breaking still remains the
most powerful motivation for superpartner masses within experimental reach. If
naturalness is the wrong criterion then what determines the mass scale of the
superpartners? We motivate supersymmetry by (1) gauge coupling unification, (2)
dark matter, and (3) precision b-tau Yukawa unification. We show that for an
LSP that is a bino-Higgsino admixture, these three requirements lead to an
upper-bound on the stop and sbottom masses in the several TeV regime because
the threshold correction to the bottom mass at the superpartner scale is
required to have a particular size. For tan beta about 50, which is needed for
t-b-tau unification, the stops must be lighter than 2.8 TeV when A_t has the
opposite sign of the gluino mass, as is favored by renormalization group
scaling. For lower values of tan beta, the top and bottom squarks must be even
lighter. Yukawa unification plus dark matter implies that superpartners are
likely in reach of the LHC, after the upgrade to 14 (or 13) TeV, independent of
any considerations of naturalness. We present a model-independent, bottom-up
analysis of the SUSY parameter space that is simultaneously consistent with
Yukawa unification and the hint for m_h = 125 GeV. We study the flavor and dark
matter phenomenology that accompanies this Yukawa unification. A large portion
of the parameter space predicts that the branching fraction for B_s to mu^+
mu^- will be observed to be significantly lower than the SM value.Comment: 34 pages plus appendices, 20 figure
Extreme Technicolor & The Walking Critical Temperature
We map the phase diagram of gauge theories of fundamental interactions in the
flavor-temperature plane using chiral perturbation theory to estimate the
relation between the pion decaying constant and the critical temperature above
which chiral symmetry is restored. We then investigate the impact of our
results on models of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking and therefore on
the electroweak early universe phase transition.Comment: RevTeX, 18 pages, 3 figure
