Simulation of Fluid Flow During Direct Synthesis of HO in a Microstructured Membrane Reactor
A microstructured membrane reactor has been developed to overcome the safety and productivity challenge of the direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide. A single membrane is employed for separate, continuous dosage of the gaseous reactants hydrogen and oxygen to the solid catalyst present in the aqueous solvent. Using a custom OpenFOAM® model, the impact of catalyst‐coated static mixers with different mixer geometries is studied. It is demonstrated that the custom fluid guiding elements outperform the investigated commercial static mixer under the flow conditions relevant to this application
Scoping review of cytolytic vaginosis literature
Background: Cytolytic vaginosis (CV) is a little-known, controversial condition that is typically not considered for women presenting with vulvovaginitis symptoms. Objective: The objective of this scoping review was to identify and compile the global evidence on CV.
Methods: A medical librarian searched Prospero, Wiley Cochrane Library, Ovid Embase, Ovid Medline, EBSCO CINAHL, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global, and Scopus, from inception to April 4, 2019 and updated to October 17, 2021. Studies were eligible if they discussed CV. Two independent reviewers conducted study selection and data extraction.
Results: Sixty-four studies were identified, with 67% of studies (n = 43) published since 2007. Studies were from around the world, including the United States (28%, n = 18), Brazil (11%, n = 7), Portugal (11%, n = 7), and China (11%, n = 7). Fifty percent of studies (n = 32) were reviews; the remainder were observational; and of these, 78% (n = 25) were cross-sectional. The most frequent topics included: diagnosis (19%, n = 12), prevalence (17%, n = 11), and overview of CV (50%, n = 32). Evidence for prevalence in symptomatic women (median prevalence of 5%, interquartile range 3%-8%) was based only on 16% of studies (n = 10) with minimal evidence on prevalence in asymptomatic women and across different geographic regions. Microbiological findings, including abundant lactobacilli and fragmented epithelial cells, were found useful to distinguish between CV and vulvovaginal candidiasis, and Lactobacillus crispatus was noted to dominate the vaginal flora in women with CV. Most studies used subjective criteria to diagnose CV as the condition lacks gold-standard microscopic criteria. The suggested primary treatment (baking soda irrigations) was largely based on expert opinion, and there was minimal evidence on associations between CV and other conditions.
Conclusion: Knowledge gaps currently exist in all realms of CV research. Additional research is needed to confirm the validity of CV and ensure that women are diagnosed and treated effectively.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
A field study of team working in a new human supervisory control system
This paper presents a case study of an investigation into team behaviour in an energy distribution company. The main aim was to investigate the impact of major changes in the company on system performance, comprising human and technical elements. A socio-technical systems approach was adopted. There were main differences between the teams investigated in the study: the time of year each control room was studied (i.e. summer or winter),the stage of development each team was in (i.e. 10 months), and the team structure (i.e. hierarchical or heterarchical). In all other respects the control rooms were the same: employing the same technology and within the same organization. The main findings were: the teams studied in the winter months were engaged in more `planning’ and `awareness’ type of activities than those studies in the summer months. Newer teams seem to be engaged in more sharing of information than older teams, which maybe indicative of the development process. One of the hierarchical teams was engaged in more `system-driven’ activities than the heterarchical team studied at the same time of year. Finally, in general, the heterarchical team perceived a greater degree of team working culture than its hierarchical counterparts. This applied research project confirms findings from laboratory research and emphasizes the importance of involving ergonomics in the design of team working in human supervisory control
Lie experts' beliefs about non-verbal indicators of deception
ABSTRACT.. Beliefs about behavioral clues to deception were investigated in 212 people, consisting of prisoners, police detectives, patrol police officers, prison guards, customs officers, and college students. Previous studies, mainly conducted with college students as subjects, showed that people have some incorrect beliefs about behavioral clues to deception. It was hypothesized that prisoners would have the best notion about clues of deception, due to the fact that they receive the most adequate feedback about successful deception strategies. The unacknowledged legacy
This paper presents a critical discussion of the treatment of mimetic art, and particularly poetry and the theatre, in the work of the Athenian philosopher Plato (427-347 BC). It centres on Plato's discussion of the corrupting powers of the arts in the Republic, and the implications that his fierce attack on poetry and theatre have for his construction of the ideal polity. The legacy of Platonic ideas in later elaborations of the corrupting power of the arts is discussed. Furthermore, the paper investigates the relationship between current debates on cultural policy and the Platonic idea that the transformative powers of the arts ought to be harnessed by the state to promote a just society. The conclusion thus reached is that “instrumental cultural policy”, rather then being a modern invention, was in fact first theorized precisely in Plato's Republic
Enhancement of Noise-induced Escape through the Existence of a Chaotic Saddle
We study the noise-induced escape process in a prototype dissipative
nonequilibrium system, the Ikeda map. In the presence of a chaotic saddle
embedded in the basin of attraction of the metastable state, we find the novel
phenomenon of a strong enhancement of noise-induced escape. This result is
established by employing the theory of quasipotentials. Our finding is of
general validity and should be experimentally observable.Comment: 4 page
What determines the spreading of a wave packet?
The multifractal dimensions D2^mu and D2^psi of the energy spectrum and
eigenfunctions, resp., are shown to determine the asymptotic scaling of the
width of a spreading wave packet. For systems where the shape of the wave
packet is preserved the k-th moment increases as t^(k*beta) with
beta=D2^mu/D2^psi, while in general t^(k*beta) is an optimal lower bound.
Furthermore, we show that in d dimensions asymptotically in time the center of
any wave packet decreases spatially as a power law with exponent D_2^psi - d

Melting of tantalum at high pressure determined by angle dispersive x-ray diffraction in a double-sided laser-heated diamond-anvil cell
The high pressure and high temperature phase diagram of Ta has been studied
in a laser-heated diamond-anvil cell (DAC) using x-ray diffraction measurements
up to 52 GPa and 3800 K. The melting was observed at nine different pressures,
being the melting temperature in good agreement with previous laser-heated DAC
experiments, but in contradiction with several theoretical calculations and
previous piston-cylinder apparatus experiments. A small slope for the melting
curve of Ta is estimated (dTm/dP = 24 K/GPa at 1 bar) and a possible
explanation for this behaviour is given. Finally, a P-V-T equation of states is
obtained, being the temperature dependence of the thermal expansion coefficient
