Discovery Prospects for NMSSM Higgs Bosons at the High-Energy Large Hadron Collider
We investigate the discovery prospects for NMSSM Higgs bosons during the
13~TeV run of the LHC. While one of the neutral Higgs bosons is demanded to
have a mass around 125~GeV and Standard Model (SM)-like properties, there can
be substantially lighter, nearby or heavier Higgs bosons, that have not been
excluded yet by LEP, Tevatron or the 8~TeV run of the LHC. The challenge
consists in discovering the whole NMSSM Higgs mass spectrum. We present the
rates for production and subsequent decay of the neutral NMSSM Higgs bosons in
the most promising final states and discuss their possible discovery. The
prospects for pinning down the Higgs sector of the Natural NMSSM will be
analysed taking into account alternative search channels. We give a series of
benchmark scenarios compatible with the experimental constraints, that feature
Higgs-to-Higgs decays and entail (exotic) signatures with multi-fermion and/or
multi-photon final states. These decay chains furthermore give access to the
trilinear Higgs self-couplings. We briefly discuss the possibility of
exploiting coupling sum rules in case not all the NMSSM Higgs bosons are
discovered
The International Linear Collider beam dumps
The ILC beam dumps are a key part of the accelerator design. At Snowmass
2005, the current status of the beam dump designs were reviewed, and the
options for the overall dump layout considered. This paper describes the
available dump options for the baseline and the alternatives and considers

Open and Editable: Exploring Library Engagement in Open Educational Resource Adoption, Adaptation and Authoring
Open Educational Resources (OER) have saved students millions of dollars in textbook costs and greatly expanded access to a wide variety of educational materials for countless numbers of students and life-long learners. OER have also saved teachers time and effort by allowing them to reuse, modify, and build on materials developed by other teachers. After a brief discussion of OER and foundations of open licensing, this article presents a number of opportunities for libraries, particularly those situated at research universities
Rydberg excitation of a single trapped ion
We demonstrate excitation of a single trapped cold Ca ion to
Rydberg levels by laser radiation in the vacuum-ultraviolet at 122 nm
wavelength. Observed resonances are identified as 3dD to 51 F, 52 F
and 3dD to 64F. We model the lineshape and our results imply a
large state-dependent coupling to the trapping potential. Rydberg ions are of
great interest for future applications in quantum computing and simulation, in
which large dipolar interactions are combined with the superb experimental
control offered by Paul traps.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Capstone Engineering Design Projects For Community Colleges
Capstone engineering design courses have been a feature at research universities and four-year schools for many years. Although such classes are less common at two-year colleges, the experience is equally beneficial for this population of students. With this in mind, Madison College introduced a project-based Engineering Design course in 2007. This paper explores Madison College’s experience over the past decade offering this class. Unique challenges and opportunities for engineering design courses at two-year colleges are discussed. Our findings include several recommended practices to benefit colleges and universities at any level that are creating new engineering design courses.
In the Highways and Hedges: Library Support for OER Adoption Efforts at Higher Education Institutions Across Virginia
A growing number of Virginia higher education libraries are involved in supporting and leading Open Educational Resource (OER) adoption efforts. Statewide, OER initiatives include a unique blend of administrative and grassroots organizations and individuals that work hand in hand to leverage the economic benefits and educational advantages of open educational resources. Continuous Lyman-alpha generation by four-wave mixing in mercury for laser-cooling of antihydrogen
Cooling antihydrogen atoms is important for future experiments both to test
the fundamental CPT symmetry by high-resolution laser spectroscopy and also to
measure the gravitational acceleration of antimatter. Laser-cooling of
antihydrogen can be done on the strong 1S-2P transition at the wavelength of
Lyman-alpha (121.6nm). A continuous-wave laser at the Lyman-alpha wavelength
based on solid-state fundamental lasers is described. By using a two-photon and
a near one photon resonance a scan across the whole phasematching curve of the
four-wave mixing process is possible. Furthermore the influence of the beam
profile of one fundamental beam on the four-wave mixing process is studied.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
