Extinguishing in-flight engine fuel-leak fires with dry chemicals
The fire extinguishant storage temperature requirements were examined for several commercially available dry chemicals. Particular emphasis was placed on the development of dry powder extinguishant that, when discharged into a jet engine fuel leak fire, would stick to the hot surfaces. Moreover, after putting out the initial fire, these extinguishants would act as antireignition catalysts, even when the fuel continued to leak onto the heated surface

Synthesis of dawsonites
Alkali metal and ammonium dawsonites can be prepared by a nonaqueous process according to which equimolar quantities of the corresponding hydrogen carbonate and aluminum hydroxide in finely divided state are heated together to a tempeature within the range of 150 to 250 C, for a period of 1 to 6 hours under a carbon dioxide pressure within the range of 120 to 360 psig. Carbonates may be used instead of hydrogencarbonates
Branching processes, the max-plus algebra and network calculus
Branching processes can describe the dynamics of various queueing systems, peer-to-peer systems, delay tolerant networks, etc. In this paper we study the basic stochastic recursion of multitype branching processes, but in two non-standard contexts. First, we consider this recursion in the max-plus algebra where branching corresponds to finding the maximal offspring of the current generation. Secondly, we consider network-calculus-type deterministic bounds as introduced by Cruz, which we extend to handle branching-type processes. The paper provides both qualitative and quantitative results and introduces various applications of (max-plus) branching processes in queueing theory
Career progress and career barriers: Women MBA graduates in Canada and the UK
This article explores the career progress of female MBA graduates in Canada and the UK and the nature of career barriers experienced in each context. Results suggest that while Canadian women have similar career profiles to men, women in the UK lag behind their male counterparts after graduation from the course. At the same time, UK women encounter more intractable career barriers in the form of negative attitudes and prejudice. A model of the ‘MBA effect’ is proposed in terms of how the qualification may impact on career barriers. This incorporates three different types of barriers which are seen to operate at the individual level (person centred barriers) and at the intermediate/organizational level (organizational culture and attitudes, corporate practices) as well as, at the macro level, the impact of legislative frameworks. Results from the UK and Canadian surveys are discussed in relation to this model and in the context of feminist theory and women in management literature

Shape-Based Models for Interactive Segmentation of Medical Images
Accurate image segmentation is one of the key problems in computer vision. In domains such as radiation treatment planning, dosimetrists must manually trace the outlines of a few critical structures on large numbers of images. Considerable similarity can be seen in the shape of these regions, both between adjacent slices in a particular patient and across the spectrum of patients. Consequently we should be able to model this similarity and use it to assist in the process of segmentation. Previous work has demonstrated that a constraint-based 2D radial model can capture generic shape information for certain shape classes, and can reduce user interaction by a factor of three over purely manual segmentation. Additional simulation studies have shown that a probabilistic version of the model has the potential to further reduce user interaction. This paper describes an implementation of both models in a general-purpose imaging and graphics framework and compares the usefulness of the models on several shape classes
Dynamical instability of a spin spiral in an interacting Fermi gas as a probe of the Stoner transition
We propose an experiment to probe ferromagnetic phenomena in an ultracold
Fermi gas, while alleviating the sensitivity to three-body loss and competing
many-body instabilities. The system is initialized in a small pitch spin
spiral, which becomes unstable in the presence of repulsive interactions. To
linear order the exponentially growing collective modes exhibit critical
slowing down close to the Stoner transition point. Also, to this order, the
dynamics are identical on the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic sides of the
transition. However, we show that scattering off the exponentially growing
modes qualitatively alters the collective mode structure. The critical slowing
down is eliminated and in its place a new unstable branch develops at large
wave vectors. Furthermore, long-wavelength instabilities are quenched on the
paramagnetic side of the transition. We study the experimental observation of
the instabilities, specifically addressing the trapping geometry and how
phase-contrast imaging will reveal the emerging domain structure. These probes
of the dynamical phenomena could allow experiments to detect the transition
point and distinguish between the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic regimes
