    The Scythe Statistical Library: An Open Source C++ Library for Statistical Computation

    The Scythe Statistical Library is an open source C++ library for statistical computation. It includes a suite of matrix manipulation functions, a suite of pseudo-random number generators, and a suite of numerical optimization routines. Programs written using Scythe are generally much faster than those written in commonly used interpreted languages, such as R and \proglang{MATLAB}; and can be compiled on any system with the GNU GCC compiler (and perhaps with other C++ compilers). One of the primary design goals of the Scythe developers has been ease of use for non-expert C++ programmers. Ease of use is provided through three primary mechanisms: (1) operator and function over-loading, (2) numerous pre-fabricated utility functions, and (3) clear documentation and example programs. Additionally, Scythe is quite flexible and entirely extensible because the source code is available to all users under the GNU General Public License.

    How Not to Lie with Judicial Votes: Misconceptions, Measurement, and Models

    In Part I, we describe the formal spatial theory often invoked to justify the statistical approach. While spatial theory has the nice feature of synthesizing theory and empirics, legal scholars may remain skeptical of its strong assumptions. Fortunately, measurement models can be illuminating even if the spatial theory is questionable. To illustrate this, Part II provides a nontechnical overview of the intuition behind measurement models that take merits votes as an input and return a summary score of Justice-specific behavior as an output. Such scores provide clear and intuitive descriptive summaries of differences in judicial voting. Confusion abounds, however, and in Part III we clarify prevailing misconceptions of such scores. We discuss how these scores relate to ideology, explain how such models grapple with the complexity and dimensionality of judicial decisionmaking, illustrate the problems of intertemporal extrapolation and cardinal interpretation of the scores, and highlight other common abuses of such measures. In Part IV, we demonstrate how modern measurement methods are useful precisely because they empower meaningful examination, data collection, and incorporation of doctrine and jurisprudence. We argue that existing uses are simply a special case of a much more general measurement approach that works synergistically with the qualitative study of case law. We demonstrate in Part V how such measurement approaches-when augmented with jurisprudentially meaningful data-----can advance our understanding of courts, with case studies of the constitutional revolution of 1937, the dimensionality of the Supreme Court, the historical origins of the standing doctrine, statutory interpretation, and backlash against Supreme Court opinions. We conclude with thoughts on the chief virtues of model-based measurement and the study of law

    We thank Professor Baker for a stimulating response to an Article in which we offered empirical evidence of editorial viewpoint diversity in the face of media consolidation. We appreciate his praise of the Article as apply[ing] innovative statistical techniques and as far superior methodologically to most empirical studies he has seen. At the same time, Baker denies the policy relevance to our Article because empirical evidence is entirely irrelevant to the field of media regulation under his preferred normative theory. Baker argues sweepingly that the legal academy\u27s increased willingness to consider the perspectives of quantitative empiricists and positive theorists is malignant, and that law is best confined to normative theory and value-based inquiries - to the exclusion of positive investigation.     Smokefree Home Rules and Cigarette Smoking Intensity Among Smokers in Different Stages of Smoking Cessation from 20 Low-and-Middle Income Countries

    Smokefree environment created by smokefree policies is associated with smoking reduction; however, there is paucity of literature on the relationship between smokefree home rules and smoking intensity in low-and-middle income countries (LMICs), and how smokefree policy affects smoking behavior of smokers at different stages of smoking cessation. This study examined the relationship between smokefree home rules and average number of cigarettes smoked per day (CPD) among daily smokers at different stages of the transtheoretical model (TTM) of change. Data from 18,718 current daily cigarette smokers from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) conducted from 2011 to 2017 in 20 LMICs were analyzed. Weighted multivariable linear regression analyses were conducted using the log of CPD as the outcome variable with smokefree home rules as the exposure variable, controlling for selected covariates. Approximately 15% of the participants were in precontemplation, 5% were in preparation, 15% lived in partial smokefree homes, and 30% lived in complete smokefree homes. The average number of CPD was 12.3, 12.0, and 10.6 among participants living in homes where smoking was allowed, partial smokefree homes, and complete smokefree homes, respectively. Compared to living in homes where smoking was allowed, living in complete smokefree homes were associated with 22.5% (95%CI = 18.4%–26.5%), 17.9% (95%CI = 8.4%–27.3%), and 29.3% (95% CI = 17.1%–41.5%) fewer CPD among participants in precontemplation, contemplation, and preparation stages, respectively. These findings suggest that complete smokefree home policy will benefit smokers in LMICs irrespective of their intention to quit smoking in addition to protecting non-smokers from secondhand smoke exposure

    Integral and fractional Quantum Hall Ising ferromagnets

    We compare quantum Hall systems at filling factor 2 to those at filling factors 2/3 and 2/5, corresponding to the exact filling of two lowest electron or composite fermion (CF) Landau levels. The two fractional states are examples of CF liquids with spin dynamics. There is a close analogy between the ferromagnetic (spin polarization P=1) and paramagnetic (P=0) incompressible ground states that occur in all three systems in the limits of large and small Zeeman spin splitting. However, the excitation spectra are different. At filling factor 2, we find spin domains at half-polarization (P=1/2), while antiferromagnetic order seems most favorable in the CF systems. The transition between P=0 and 1, as seen when e.g. the magnetic field is tilted, is also studied by exact diagonalization in toroidal and spherical geometries. The essential role of an effective CF-CF interaction is discussed, and the experimentally observed incompresible half-polarized state is found in some models

    Faint dwarfs as a test of DM models: WDM vs. CDM

    We use high resolution Hydro++N-Body cosmological simulations to compare the assembly and evolution of a small field dwarf (stellar mass ~ 106−7^{6-7} M⊙\odot, total mass 1010^{10} M⊙\odot in Λ\Lambda dominated CDM and 2keV WDM cosmologies. We find that star formation (SF) in the WDM model is reduced and delayed by 1-2 Gyr relative to the CDM model, independently of the details of SF and feedback. Independent of the DM model, but proportionally to the SF efficiency, gas outflows lower the central mass density through `dynamical heating', such that all realizations have circular velocities << 20kms at 500 ~pc, in agreement with local kinematic constraints. As a result of dynamical heating, older stars are less centrally concentrated than younger stars, similar to stellar population gradients observed in nearby dwarf galaxies. Introducing an important diagnostic of SF and feedback models, we translate our simulations into artificial color-magnitude diagrams and star formation histories in order to directly compare to available observations. The simulated galaxies formed most of their stars in many ∼\sim10 Myr long bursts. The CDM galaxy has a global SFH, HI abundance and Fe/H and alpha-elements distribution well matched to current observations of dwarf galaxies. These results highlight the importance of directly including `baryon physics' in simulations when 1) comparing predictions of galaxy formation models with the kinematics and number density of local dwarf galaxies and 2) differentiating between CDM and non-standard models with different DM or power spectra.Comment: 13 pages including Appendix on Color Magnitude Diagrams.     Acceptability of the Predicting Abusive Head Trauma (PredAHT) clinical prediction tool: A qualitative study with child protection professionals

    The validated Predicting Abusive Head Trauma (PredAHT) tool estimates the probability of abusive head trauma (AHT) based on combinations of six clinical features: head/neck bruising; apnea; seizures; rib/long-bone fractures; retinal hemorrhages. We aimed to determine the acceptability of PredAHT to child protection professionals. We conducted qualitative semi-structured interviews with 56 participants: clinicians (25), child protection social workers (10), legal practitioners (9, including 4 judges), police officers (8), and pathologists (4), purposively sampled across southwest United Kingdom. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and imported into NVivo for thematic analysis (38% double-coded). We explored participants’ evaluations of PredAHT, their opinions about the optimal way to present the calculated probabilities, and their interpretation of probabilities in the context of suspected AHT. Clinicians, child protection social workers and police thought PredAHT would be beneficial as an objective adjunct to their professional judgment, to give them greater confidence in their decisions. Lawyers and pathologists appreciated its value for prompting multidisciplinary investigations, but were uncertain of its usefulness in court. Perceived disadvantages included: possible over-reliance and false reassurance from a low score. Interpretations regarding which percentages equate to ‘low’, ‘medium’ or ‘high’ likelihood of AHT varied; participants preferred a precise % probability over these general terms. Participants would use PredAHT with provisos: if they received multi-agency training to define accepted risk thresholds for consistent interpretation; with knowledge of its development; if it was accepted by colleagues. PredAHT may therefore increase professionals’ confidence in their decision-making when investigating suspected AHT, but may be of less value in court

    The Mass of the White Dwarf Companion in the Self-Lensing Binary KOI-3278: Einstein vs. Newton

    KOI-3278 is a self-lensing stellar binary consisting of a white-dwarf secondary orbiting a Sun-like primary star. Kruse and Agol (2014) noticed small periodic brightenings every 88.18 days in the Kepler photometry and interpreted these as the result of microlensing by a white dwarf with about 63%\% of the mass of the Sun. We obtained two sets of spectra for the primary that allowed us to derive three sets of spectroscopic estimates for its effective temperature, surface gravity, and metallicity for the first time. We used these values to update the Kruse and Agol (2014) Einsteinian microlensing model, resulting in a revised mass for the white dwarf of 0.539−0.020+0.022 M⊙0.539^{+0.022}_{-0.020} \, M_{\odot}. The spectra also allowed us to determine radial velocities and derive orbital solutions, with good agreement between the two independent data sets. An independent Newtonian dynamical MCMC model of the combined velocities yielded a mass for the white dwarf of 0.5122−0.0058+0.0057 M⊙0.5122^{+0.0057}_{-0.0058} \, M_{\odot}. The nominal uncertainty for the Newtonian mass is about four times better than for the Einsteinian, ±1.1%\pm 1.1\% vs. ±4.1%\pm 4.1\% and the difference between the two mass determinations is 5.2%5.2 \%. We then present a joint Einsteinian microlensing and Newtonian radial velocity model for KOI-3278, which yielded a mass for the white dwarf of 0.5250−0.0089+0.0082 M⊙0.5250^{+0.0082}_{-0.0089} \, M_{\odot}. This joint model does not rely on any white dwarf evolutionary models or assumptions on the white dwarf mass-radius relation. We discuss the benefits of a joint model of self-lensing binaries, and how future studies of these systems can provide insight into the mass-radius relation of white dwarfs.Comment: ApJ Accepted; 22 Pages, 8 Figures, 6 Tables and 4 Supplementary Table

    Factors influencing child protection professionals' decision-making and multidisciplinary collaboration in suspected abusive head trauma cases: a qualitative study

    Clinicians face unique challenges when assessing suspected child abuse cases. The majority of the literature exploring diagnostic decision-making in this field is anecdotal or survey-based and there is a lack of studies exploring decision-making around suspected abusive head trauma (AHT). We aimed to determine factors influencing decision-making and multidisciplinary collaboration in suspected AHT cases, amongst 56 child protection professionals. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with clinicians (25), child protection social workers (10), legal practitioners (9, including 4 judges), police officers (8), and pathologists (4), purposively sampled across southwest United Kingdom. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and imported into NVivo for thematic analysis (38% double-coded). We identified six themes influencing decision-making: ‘professional’, ‘medical’, ‘circumstantial’, ‘family’, ‘psychological’ and ‘legal’ factors. Participants diagnose AHT based on clinical features, the history, and the social history, after excluding potential differential diagnoses. Participants find these cases emotionally challenging but are aware of potential biases in their evaluations and strive to overcome these. Barriers to decision-making include lack of experience, uncertainty, the impact on the family, the pressure of making the correct diagnosis, and disagreements between professionals. Legal barriers include alternative theories of causation proposed in court. Facilitators include support from colleagues and knowledge of the evidence-base. Participants’ experiences with multidisciplinary collaboration are generally positive, however child protection social workers and police officers are heavily reliant on clinicians to guide their decision-making, suggesting the need for training on the medical aspects of physical abuse for these professionals and multidisciplinary training that provides knowledge about the roles of each agency
