This study explored the Media Focus in Afghanistan News Coverage to examine what categories of Afghanistan-related news received the largest amount of coverage during periods from 2010 to 2012. This study covered reports in The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, and The Daily Outlook Afghanistan, a national Afghan news outlet, as a sample within a period of three months over three years (June 2010, July 2011, and August 2012). The 147 news stories\u27 headlines of the four news organizations were studied to find what categories (process: peace talks, negotiation, and economic development; conflict: violence and military action; and politics and policy: USA, Afghanistan, and NATO) received the most coverage on Afghanistan. The purpose of this study was to examine focal points in media coverage on Afghanistan. The findings of the study indicated that the category of politics and policy, received the highest media coverage with 55% both at the U.S.-based news organizations, including the New York Times, The Washington Post, and USA Today, and also the Afghan paper, Daily Outlook Afghanistan, while the other two categories including process: peace talks, negotiation, and economic development with 22% and conflict: violence and military with 23% of the news coverage. Although peace talks and negotiation in Afghanistan have been extensively discussed by the Afghan government, the international community, and particularly by the U.S. government, the media did not cover them that much. In fact, media coverage on this subject (negotiation and peace talks, and economic development) is considered very critical to Afghanistan, and the more positive frame and frequent coverage the better effect it will have on the issues

    Get PDF
The Internet of Things (IoT) is significant in today’s development of mobile networks enabling to obtain information from the environment, devices, and appliances. A number of applications have been implemented in various kinds of technologies. IoT has high exposure to security attacks and threats. There are several requirements in terms of security. Confidentiality is one of the major concerns in the wireless network. Integrity and availability are key issues along with the confidentiality. This research focuses on identifying the attacks that can occur in IoT. Packet filtering and patches method were used to secure the network and mitigate mentioned attacks but these techniques are not capable of achieving security in IoT. This paper uses Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) to address these mentioned security issues. Official AES version uses the standard for secret key encryption. However, several problems and attacks still occur with the implementation of this original AES. We modified AES by adding white box and the doubling of the AES encryption. We also replaced the Substitute-Byte (S-Box) in the conventional AES with the white box. The significance of a white box is where the whole AES cipher decomposed into round functions. While doubling the process of AES gives difficulty to the attacker or malware to interrupt the network or system. From the algorithms, our proposed solutions can control DoS attack on IoT and any other miniature devices

Objective: The primary goal of the study was to examine students’ perceptions of classroom assessment at a public university in Afghanistan. Exploring current assessment practices focused on student and faculty members lived experiences was a secondary goal. The study also sought to collect evidence on whether or not the new assessment policy was effective in student achievement. Method: Authors used an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design to conduct the study. Initially, we applied the Students Perceptions of Assessment Questionnaire (SPAQ), translated into Dari/Farsi and validated, to collect data from a random sample of 400 students from three colleges: Agriculture, Education, and Humanities. Response rate was 88.25% (N = 353). Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data from a purposeful sample of 18 students and 7 faculty members. Descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, and t-tests were used to analyze quantitative data, and NVivo 12 was used to conduct thematic analysis on qualitative data. Results: The quantitative results suggest that students have positive perceptions of the current assessment practices. However, both students and faculty members were dissatisfied with the grading policy, reinforcing summative over formative assessment. Results support that the policy change regarding assessment has resulted in more students passing the courses compared to in the past. The findings also suggest improvements in faculty professional skills such as assessment and teaching and ways that they engage students in assessment processes. Implication for Policy and Practice: Recommendations include revisiting the grading policy at the national level to allow faculty members to balance the formative and summative assessment and utilizing assessment benchmarks and rubrics to guide formative and summative assessment implementation in practice
