    On the D0D^0 -- DsD_s lifetime difference and τ→7π+ντ\tau\to 7\pi + \nu_\tau decays

    In this paper we discuss some aspects of inclusive decays of charmed mesons and also decays of the τ\tau lepton into ντ+7π\nu_\tau + 7\pi. We find that phase space effects are likely to explain the observed lifetime ratio τ(Ds+)/τ(D0)\tau(D_s^+) / \tau(D^0) = 1.17. In particular one need not appeal to a large annihilation contribution in the inclusive D0D^0 decay which, being absent in Ds+D_s^+ decays could also contribute to the enhanced D0D^0 decay rate relative to that of the Ds+D_s^+. Examining a separate problem, we find that the rate for τ→ντ+7π\tau\to \nu_\tau + 7\pi is almost completely dominated by the tiny phase space for the final eight particle state. Using an effective chiral Lagrangian to estimate the matrix element yields a branching ratio into the channel of interest far smaller than the present upper bound.Comment: No figure

    P04.42. Use of complementary and alternative medicine among adults with neuro-psychiatric symptoms common to mild traumatic brain injury

    Purpose: One in three adults uses complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) annually in the United States. However, the pattern of CAM use among adults with neuropsychiatric symptoms commonly reported by patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), a serious public health concern, is not well studied. Methods: We analyzed data from the 2007 National Health Interview Survey (n=23,393) to compare CAM use between adults with and without neuropsychiatric symptoms common to mTBI. Symptoms included self-reported anxiety, depression, insomnia, headaches, memory deficits, attentional deficits, and excessive sleepiness. CAM use was defined as use of mind-body (e.g., meditation), biological (e.g., herbs), manipulation (e.g., massage) therapies, and alternative medical systems (e.g., Ayurveda), within the past 12 months. We estimated prevalence and reasons for CAM use in patients with and without neuropsychiatric symptoms. We also explored variations in CAM use by the number of symptoms. Multivariable logistic regression was performed to examine the association between neuropsychiatric symptoms and CAM use after adjustment for sociodemographic characteristics, illness burden (e.g,. fibromyalgia, low back pain), access to care, and health habits. Results: Adults with neuropsychiatric symptoms had higher CAM use compared to adults without neuropsychiatric symptoms (44% vs. 30%, p<0.001); prevalence increased with increasing number of symptoms (p-value for trend <0.001, table below). Differences persisted after adjustment (table below). Twenty percent used CAM because standard treatments were either too expensive or ineffective; 25% used CAM because it was recommended by a provider. Conclusion: More than 40% of adults with neuropsychiatric symptoms observed in mTBI used CAM. An increasing number of symptoms was associated with increased use. Future research is needed to understand the use, efficacy, and safety of CAM in mTBI patients

    Quantification and Localization of Mast Cells in Periapical Lesions

    Background: Periapical lesions occur in response to chronic irritation in periapical tissue, generally resulting from an infected root canal. Specific etiological agents of induction, participating cell population and growth factors associated with maintenance and resolution of periapical lesions are incompletely understood. Among the cells found in periapical lesions, mast cells have been implicated in the inflammatory mechanism. Aim: Quantifications and the possible role played by mast cells in the periapical granuloma and radicular cyst. Hence, this study is to emphasize the presence (localization) and quantification of mast cells in periapical granuloma and radicular cyst. Materials and Methods: A total of 30 cases and out of which 15 of periapical granuloma and 15 radicular cyst, each along with the case details from the previously diagnosed cases in the department of oral pathology were selected for the study. The gender distribution showed male 8 (53.3%) and females 7 (46.7%) in periapical granuloma cases and male 10 (66.7%) and females 5 (33.3%) in radicular cyst cases. The statistical analysis used was unpaired t‑test.Results: Mean mast cell count in periapical granuloma subepithelial and deeper connective tissue, was 12.40 (0.99%) and 7.13 (0.83%), respectively. The mean mast cell counts in subepithelial and deeper connective tissue of radicular cyst were 17.64 (1.59%) and 12.06 (1.33%) respectively, which was statistically significant. No statistical significant difference was noted among males and females.Conclusion: Mast cells were more in number in radicular cyst. Based on the concept that mast cells play a critical role in the induction of inflammation, it is logical to use therapeutic agents to alter mast cell function and secretion, to thwart inflammation at its earliest phases.     Arduino - Uno Based Underground Cable Fault Detection System (AUCFDS)

    Today, it is very challenging to manually find underground cable faults like wear and tear or rodents, because it costs more and takes more time. Finding the fault sources is also very difficult because the entire line must be dug to check for cable line faults. Our suggested system utilises an Arduino- microcontroller to help locate the fault's exact location. The standard concept of Ohm's law is applied in this system. The location of the shorted cable line determines the current flow when a low DC voltage is applied to underground cable lines at the feeder end through a series resistor. The system makes use of a rectified power supply and an Arduino- microcontroller board. The Arduino - microcontroller board is interfaced with a combination of resistors and current sensing circuits. the cable's length is represented by digital data that is sent from the internal ADC device to the microcontroller and displayed on the LCD Display

    Recasting Food: An Ethnographic Study on How Caste and Resource Inequality Perpetuate Social Disadvantage in India

    Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) is the principal programme operating in India to address issues around child development, malnutrition and pre-school education. A package of services – including the Supplementary Nutrition Programme (SNP), pre-school education, immunization, health check-ups, referral services, and nutrition and health education – are provided through an Anganwadi Centre (AWC) with an Anganwadi Worker (AWW) and an Anganwadi Helper (AWH) for roughly every one thousand people. From the mid-1990s, there have been successive efforts on the part of the Government of India to universalize ICDS, and there has been a multi-fold increase in funds allocated to this programme between the 8th Five-Year Plan (1992–93 to 1996–97) and the 12th Five-Year Plan (2012–17) (1-2). However, the utilization of all services under ICDS continues to be grossly low. Close to 75 percent of children aged 0–71 months in the areas covered by AWCs did not receive any supplementary food from the centres, and less than 12 percent of children received supplementary food ‘almost daily’. For children aged 36–71 months this figure is 15.5 percent. More than 80 percent of children were not weighed at all. It has been reported that children belonging to economically backward and socially marginalised families, including Dalit, tribal, and religious minorities, are excluded from utilising these services through unfavourable institutional rules and structural factors. Equally, members of well-off families do not use services provided by AWCs – especially the SNP – for under-6 children. A multi-sited ethnographic study was conducted in four villages in Gujarat in order to identify the reasons behind poor utilisation of AWCs, especially the SNP services. The study aimed to understand everyday experience of households around the SNP in rural settings and an opportunity to study AWCs as institutions embedded in the context of village cultural life. The authors hypothesise that a study focusing on AWCs could serve as an illustrative case to highlight challenges in implementing other entitlement-based programmes

    Hierarchically Porous Gd3+-Doped CeO2 Nanostructures for the Remarkable Enhancement of Optical and Magnetic Properties

    Rare earth ion-doped CeO2 has attracted more and more attention because of its special electrical, optical, magnetic, or catalytic properties. In this paper, a facile electrochemical deposition route was reported for the direct growth of the porous Gd-doped CeO2. The formation process of Gd-doped CeO2 composites was investigated. The obtained deposits were characterized by SEM, EDS, XRD, and XPS. The porous Gd3+- doped CeO2 (10 at% Gd) displays a typical type I adsorption isotherm and yields a large specific surface area of 135 m2/g. As Gd3+ ions were doped into CeO2 lattice, the absorption spectrum of Gd3+-doped CeO2 nanocrystals exhibited a red shift compared with porous CeO2 nanocrystals and bulk CeO2, and the luminescence of Gd3+-doped CeO2 deposits was remarkably enhanced due to the presence of more oxygen vacancies. In addition, the strong magnetic properties of Gd-doped CeO2 (10 at% Gd) were observed, which may be caused by Gd3+ ions or more oxygen defects in deposits.
