Potassium chlorate decomposition under high pressure

High pressure physics involves placing various substances under high pressure and observing changes in that substance. In this experiment this high amount of pressure is induced using a diamond anvil cell. A diamond anvil cell uses a metal gasket to hold the sample between two diamonds, which will press on the sample to reach high pressures. High pressures are reached with a moderate amount of force by exerting that force over a small area. Diamonds are used for the compression because of their hardness and ability to resist compression. The pressure being exerted on the sample using a diamond anvil cell is often measured using ruby fluorescence. The behavior of ruby under high pressure is well known so the pressure inside the diamond anvil cell can be determined by observing the ruby fluorescence. Ruby is placed inside the gasket along with the sample so that it is always at the same pressure as the sample. Potassium Chlorate is a chemical that is often used as an oxygen producer and as an explosive when mixed with other chemicals. It decomposes under heat to release oxygen gas, which is the reaction we are trying to induce by placing the chemical under pressure. When molecules heat up they begin to vibrate more rapidly and are more likely to collide with each other. When molecules undergo higher pressures they are also more likely to collide as atoms get closer together. The purpose of this experiment is to determine if pressure can induce the same reaction in Potassium Chlorate as heat

High pressure infrared studies of HMX

We are studying the effects of pressure on HMX (Octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine) using infrared spectroscopy. The sample is put under pressure using a diamond anvil cell at ambient temperature, data is collected at the National Synchrotron Light Source in Brookhaven National Laboratory. In analyzing this data, we hope to learn more about the molecular vibrations as the molecule bends and deforms under pressure. Such understanding could aid in determining new safety standards or more efficient ways of using HMX. In future studies, we intend to include the aspect of temperature variation in addition to pressure, with the goal of describing the molecule in a phase diagram

Solutions of a Class of Multiplicatively Advanced Differential Equations II: Fourier Transforms

    Get PDF
For a wide class of solutions to multiplicatively advanced differential equations (MADEs), a comprehensive set of relations is established between their Fourier transforms and Jacobi theta functions. In demonstrating this set of relations, the current study forges a systematic connection between the theory of MADEs and that of special functions. In a large subset of the general case, we introduce a new family of Schwartz wavelet MADE solutions Wμ,λðtÞ for μ and λ rational with λ > 0. These Wμ,λðtÞ have all moments vanishing and have a Fourier transform related to theta functions. For low parameter values derived from λ, the connection of the Wμ,λðtÞ to the theory of wavelet frames is begun. For a second set of low parameter values derived from λ, the notion of a canonical extension is introduced. A number of examples are discussed. The study of convergence of the MADE solution to the solution of its analogous ODE is begun via an in depth analysis of a normalized example W−4/3,1/3ðtÞ/W−4/3,1/3ð0Þ. A useful set of generalized q-Wallis formulas are developed that play a key role in this study of convergence.ECU Libraries Open Access Publishing Support Fun

Self-similarity and non-Markovian behavior in traded stock volumes

    Get PDF
The volume traded daily for 17 stocks is followed over a period of about half a century. We look at the volume of stocks traded in a certain time interval (day, week, month) and analyze how long that traded volume keeps monotonically increasing or decreasing. On all three times scales we find that the sequence of traded volumes behaves neither like a sequence of independent and identically distributed variables, nor like a Markov sequence. A compressed exponential survival function with the same parameters at all timescales is firmly established. A day with an increase (decrease) of traded volume is most likely followed by a day with a decrease (increase) of traded volume. We show how the apparent self-similarity results because the small day-to-day anticorrelation carries over when larger time intervals are considered. The observed small anticorrelation can be explained as a consequence of market forces and trader reactions

Zaštitne maske za lice tijekom pandemije bolesti COVID-19 – što se skriva iza? Percepcija lica sa zaštitnim maskama

    Get PDF

Smooth wavelet approximations of truncated Legendre polynomials via the Jacobi theta function

    Get PDF
The family of nth order q-Legendre polynomials are introduced. They are shown to be obtainable from the Jacobi theta function and to satisfy recursion relations and multiplicatively advanced differential equations (MADEs) that are analogues of the recursion relations and ODEs satisfied by the nth degree Legendre polynomials. The nth order q-Legendre polynomials are shown to have vanishing kth moments for 0...4;k<n , as does the nth degree truncated Legendre polynomial. Convergence results are obtained, approximations are given, a reciprocal symmetry is shown, and nearly orthonormal frames are constructed. Conditions are given under which a MADE remains a MADE under inverse Fourier transform. This is used to construct new wavelets as solutions of MADEs

Diplomska naloga temelji na študiji brezžičnega prenosa slike za aplikacije v vesolju. Je prva faza projekta in se osredotoča na izbiro primerne tehnologije in komponent za drugo fazo kjer bo izdelan demonstracijski sistem. V vesoljskih odpravah Evropske vesoljske agencije (ESA) slikovni sistemi pogosto potrebujejo več metrov dolge kable. Kar predstavlja skoraj polovico oz. znaten del teže slikovnega instrumenta. Centralna enota mora biti sposobna komunicirati z večjimi WIS.This diploma is based on a study of wireless transmission of pictures for space applications. It is the first phase of the project and is focused on choosing the right technology and components for second phase where a demonstrative system will be built. In space missions of European Space Agency (ESA) cameras usually need long cables, which equals to almost half or a significant part of the weight of the whole system. Dependable on the position of the camera, connections can go trough multiple joints and mechanisms, which significantly increases complexity of the whole system and it\u27s reliability. In this diploma the tested system consists of two parts. On one side there is a PC with WiFi transceiver and software equipment, which represents the central unit of space craft. On the other side there is the wireless imaging system (WIS) with it\u27s own power supply. WIS consists of a camera, wireless module, microcontroller and power supply. Central unit in space craft must be able to communicate with multiple WIS

Q-advanced models for tsunami and rogue waves

    Get PDF
A wavelet [subscript] Kq[/subscript] (t ) , that satisfies the q-advanced differential equation [superscript] K q [variant prime][/superscript] ( t ) =[subscript] K q[/subscript] (qt ) for q >1 , is used to model N-wave oscillations observed in tsunamis. Although q-advanced ODEs may seem nonphysical, we present an application that model tsunamis, in particular the Japanese tsunami of March 11, 2011, by utilizing a one-dimensional wave equation that is forced by [subscript] Fq[/subscript] ( t ,x ) =[subscript] Kq[/subscript] [subscript] (t )q[/subscript] Sin (x ) . The profile [subscript] F q[/subscript] is similar to tsunami models in present use. The function Sin [superscript] ( t ) [/superscript] q is a wavelet that satisfies a q-advanced harmonic oscillator equation. It is also shown that another wavelet, Cos [superscript] ( t ) [/superscript] q , matches a rogue-wave profile. This is explained in terms of a resonance wherein two small amplitude forcing waves eventually lead to a large amplitude rogue. Since wavelets are used in the detection of tsunamis and rogues, the signal-analysis performance of [subscript] K q[/subscript] and [superscript] Cos q [/superscript] is examined on actual data
