A movable stop mechanism for the SIRE telescope
A movable stop mechanism (MSM) designed to activate flaps that change the size and shape of a telescope aperture stop on command is described. Operating at the cryogenic temperatures of the optical system, it consists primarily of a rotary solenoid that drives (activates) dual four-bar linkages in synchronism that in turn rotate the butterfly flaps into position. The design, performance characteristics, and testing of this mechanism are discussed. Specific problems that occurred during testing and the solutions that were adopted are also described
Longwall shearer tracking system
A tracking system for measuring and recording the movements of a longwall shearer vehicle includes an optical tracking assembly carried at one end of a desired vehicle path and a retroreflector assembly carried by the vehicle. Continuous horizontal and vertical light beams are alternately transmitted by means of a rotating Dove prism to the reflector assembly. A vertically reciprocating reflector interrupts the continuous light beams and converts these to discrete horizontal and vertical light beam images transmitted at spaced intervals along the path. A second rotating Dove prism rotates the vertical images to convert them to a second series of horizontal images while the first mentioned horizontal images are left unrotated and horizontal. The images are recorded on a film
Isolated Photons in Deep Inelastic Scattering
Photon radiation at large transverse momenta at colliders is a detailed probe
of hard interaction dynamics. The isolated photon production cross section in
deep inelastic scattering was measured recently by the ZEUS experiment, and
found to be considerably larger than theoretical predictions obtained with
widely used event generators. To investigate this discrepancy, we perform a
dedicated parton-level calculation of this observable, including contributions
from fragmentation and large-angle radiation. Our results are in good agreement
with all aspects of the experimental measurement.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

The Euro-Arab Investment Treaty That Nearly Was
This article documents how members of the European Economic Community and members of the Arab League negotiated a draft âmega-regionalâ investment protection treaty from 1976 to the late 1980sâthe first of its kind. The negotiations produced a full draft treaty and came tantalisingly close to completion but ultimately ran into the political sands. Had it been concluded, the Convention would have been the most significant investment protection treaty ever negotiated at the time, and one of the most significant to this day. Negotiations were conducted within the cloak of diplomatic confidentiality, however, so the effort has remained unknown to even specialised scholars and practitioners to this day
Atomic quantum superposition state generation via optical probing
We analyze the performance of a protocol to prepare an atomic ensemble in a
superposition of two macroscopically distinguishable states. The protocol
relies on conditional measurements performed on a light field, which interacts
with the atoms inside an optical cavity prior to detection, and we investigate
cavity enhanced probing with continuous beams of both coherent and squeezed
light. The stochastic master equations used in the analysis are expressed in
terms of the Hamiltonian of the probed system and the interaction between the
probed system and the probe field and are thus quite generally applicable.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figure
