    An Assessment of Economic Considerations for Industrial Hemp Production

    United States farm policy and programs are governed by the Farm Bill. The 2014 Farm Bill allows for the legal production and research of industrial hemp as long as it meets the standards outlined in the Farm Bill. Although it has a wide range of uses (upwards of 25,000 products use hemp), there is a lack of recent information regarding the economic feasibility of hemp production for the private agricultural sector. Through an extensive search of existing literature, information was gathered to construct an enterprise budget for industrial hemp. Data from the enterprise budget were used in a constrained linear programming model to compare how introducing industrial hemp production could change crop allocations in all 75 counties of Arkansas When industrial hemp was introduced, the total number of acres farmed increased by 2.8% to 4.4%, the statewide profit increased by 0.3% to 18.2%, and rice was the only crop that increased in acreage by 5%. While these results suggest that industrial hemp may be an economically promising crop, there are still hurdles to overcome. The lack of clearance (permitting) by the Drug Enforcement Agency and the absence of hemp processing facilities in the United States are clear roadblocks to hemp production. Once permitting hurdles are overcome, additional research will be needed to identify optimal locations for processing facilities and target markets for hemp goods

    Hedging Break-Even Biodiesel Production Costs Using Soybean Oil Futures

    The effectiveness of hedging volatile input prices for biodiesel producers is examined over one- to eight-week time horizons. Results reveal that hedging break-even soybean costs with soybean oil futures offers significant reductions in input price risk. The degree of risk reduction is dependent upon type of hedge, naïve or risk-minimizing, and upon time horizon.     Precise Control of Molecular Self-Diffusion in Isoreticular and Multivariate Metal-Organic Frameworks.

    Understanding the factors that affect self-diffusion in isoreticular and multivariate (MTV) MOFs is key to their application in drug delivery, separations, and heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we measure the apparent self-diffusion of solvents saturated within the pores of large single crystals of MOF-5, IRMOF-3 (amino-functionalized MOF-5), and 17 MTV-MOF-5/IRMOF-3 materials at various mole fractions. We find that the apparent self-diffusion coefficient of N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) may be tuned linearly between the diffusion coefficients of MOF-5 and IRMOF-3 as a function of the linker mole fraction. We compare a series of solvents at saturation in MOF-5 and IRMOF-3 to elucidate the mechanism by which the linker amino groups tune molecular diffusion. The ratio of the self-diffusion coefficients for solvents in MOF-5 to those in IRMOF-3 is similar across all solvents tested, regardless of solvent polarity. We conclude that average pore aperture, not solvent-linker chemical interactions, is the primary factor responsible for the different diffusion dynamics upon introduction of an amino group to the linker

    Investigating the Underlying Mechanisms Responsible for the Effectiveness of Behavioral Cough Therapy

    Chronic cough (CC), a cough that lasts more than eight weeks, is the number one complaint of adults seeking non-emergent medical care. An estimated 20% of patients with CC do not respond to medical treatment, and are said to have refractory chronic cough (RCC). Several studies provide evidence that RCC is caused by hypersensitivity of sensory protein receptors in the airway epithelium known to regulate cough. The primary sensory receptor is the transient receptor potential vanilloid (TRPV). These receptors can be found in the epithelial layer of the bronchus, larynx and nose. These receptors are very plastic; in other words they are easily influenced by endogenous and exogenous stimulants. Behavioral cough therapy (BCT), which is provided by speech-language pathologists, has been shown to result in reduced cough sensitivity. However, the underlying mechanism that results in reduced cough sensitivity is unknown. We hypothesize the change is due to down-modulation of TRPV receptors through a neuroplastic mechanism. To test this hypothesis, we will use Western Blot analysis and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) to estimate TRPV expression in biopsies of epithelial tissue obtained from the nose and larynx of patients pre and post-BCT. Examining the expression of TRPV before and after BCT will potentially explain the mechanism of the effect of BCT, which may increase its application in the clinic as well as open doors to other potential treatments for RCC

    Broadly, electronic records are presenting libraries and archives with a new set of challenges. The goal of this project is to develop the first iteration of a set of policies, procedures, guidelines and workflows to address issues specific to stewardship and preservation of born digital materials held in at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign University Archives collections and establish a base of formal policies, procedures and workflows for the Preservation Unit’s Born Digital Content Preservation service staff to consult when assisting others with born digital Library collections materials. This paper outlines the project development, methodology and first iteration of documentation produced to meet this goal, and to begin coordinated efforts to steward born digital collections at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s University Library and University Archives.Ope

    In this letter we apply the methods of our previous paper hep-th/0108045 to noncommutative fermions. We show that the fermions form a spin-1/2 representation of the Lorentz algebra.
