On the number of prime order subgroups of finite groups

    No full text
Let G be a finite group and let ?(G) be the number of prime order subgroups of G. We determine the groups G with the property ?(G)??G?/2?1, extending earlier work of C. T. C. Wall, and we use our classification to obtain new results on the generation of near-rings by units of prime order

Flip Distance Between Triangulations of a Simple Polygon is NP-Complete

Let T be a triangulation of a simple polygon. A flip in T is the operation of removing one diagonal of T and adding a different one such that the resulting graph is again a triangulation. The flip distance between two triangulations is the smallest number of flips required to transform one triangulation into the other. For the special case of convex polygons, the problem of determining the shortest flip distance between two triangulations is equivalent to determining the rotation distance between two binary trees, a central problem which is still open after over 25 years of intensive study. We show that computing the flip distance between two triangulations of a simple polygon is NP-complete. This complements a recent result that shows APX-hardness of determining the flip distance between two triangulations of a planar point set.Comment: Accepted versio

Infrared broadband source from 1000nm to 1700nm, based on an Erbium, Neodymium and Bismuth doped double-clad fiber

    Get PDF
A Nd3+, Er3+ and Bi3+ doped double-clad fiber (core diameter of 25.5ÎŒm, cladding diameter of 125ÎŒm) with a broad infrared emission has been fabricated based on technique of dry granulated oxides and investigated. Upon the excitation with a 800nm cw pump source all of the three dopant materials showed fluorescence in the infrared region of interest (1000-1700nm). The observed emitted fluorescence power was measured to be 659ÎŒW. Changing the pump wavelength to 976nm led to a fluorescence of only Er3+ and Bi3+ and a broadening of the Bi3+ emission peak. The maximal measured fluorescence output power was 1.42mW, when pumped at 976nm

Habituation of reflexive and motivated behavior in mice with deficient BK channel function.

Habituation is considered the most basic form of learning. It describes the decrease of a behavioral response to a repeated non-threatening sensory stimulus and therefore provides an important sensory filtering mechanism. While some neuronal pathways mediating habituation are well described, underlying cellular/molecular mechanisms are not yet fully understood. In general, there is an agreement that short-term and long-term habituation are based on different mechanisms. Historically, a distinction has also been made between habituation of motivated versus reflexive behavior. In recent studies in invertebrates the large conductance voltage- and calcium-activated potassium (BK) channel has been implicated to be a key player in habituation by regulating synaptic transmission. Here, we tested mice deficient for the pore forming α-subunit of the BK channel for short-term and long-term habituation of the acoustic startle reflex (reflexive behavior) and of the exploratory locomotor behavior in the open field box (motivated behavior). Short-term habituation of startle was completely abolished in the BK knock-out mice, whereas neither long-term habituation of startle nor habituation of motivated behavior was affected by the BK deficiency. Our results support a highly preserved mechanism for short-term habituation of startle across species that is distinct from long-term habituation mechanisms. It also supports the notion that there are different mechanisms underlying habituation of motivated behavior versus reflexive behavior

On-site early-warning system for bishkek (Kyrgyzstan)

    Get PDF
<p>In this work, the development of an on-site early warning system for Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) is outlined. Several low cost sensors equipped with MEMS accelerometers are installed in eight buildings distributed within the urban area. The different sensing units communicate each other via wireless links and the seismic data are streamed in real-time to the data center using internet. Since each single sensing unit has computing capabilities, software for data processing can be installed to perform decentralized actions. In particular, each sensing unit can perform event detection task and run software for on-site early warning. If a description for the vulnerability of the building is uploaded in the sensing unit, this piece of information can be exploited to introduce the expected probability of damage in the early-warning protocol customized for a specific structure.</p
