Three-Dimensional (3D) Modelling and Optimization for Multipurpose Analysis and Representation of Ancient Statues
The technological advances that have developed in the field of threedimensional (3D) survey and modelling allow us to digitally and accurately preserve many significant heritage assets that are at risk. With regard to museum assets, extensive digitalization projects aim at achieving multilingual digital libraries accessible to everyone. A first trend is geared to the use of 3D models for further specialized studies, acquiring and processing virtual detailed copies as close as possible to the shape and contents of the real one. On the other hand, many museums look today for more interactive and immersive exhibitions, which involve the visitorsâ emotions, and this has contributed to the increase in the use of virtual reality and 3D models in museums installations. In this paper, we present two case studies that belong to these scenarios. Multisensor surveys have been applied to some archeological statues preserved in two museums for multipurpose analyses and representation: a UTI test, which required high detailed data about the geometry of the object, and a communicative application, which needed instead a high level of model optimization, poor geometry, but very good representation that was achieved through remeshing tools and normal maps
MULTI-SOURCE 3D MODELS SUPPORTING ULTRASONIC TEST TO INVESTIGATE AN EGYPTIAN SCULPTURE OF THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM IN BOLOGNA
The paper presents the workflow and the results of an ultrasonic 3D investigation and a 3D survey application aimed at the assessment of the internal integrity of an ancient sculpture. The work aimed at highlighting the ability of methods devoted to the 3D geometry acquisition of small objects when applied to diagnosis performed by geophysical investigation. In particular, two methods widely applied for small objects modelling are considered and compared, the digital Photogrammetry with the Structure from Motion (SFM) technique and hand-held 3D scanners. The study concludes with the aim to enhance the final graphical representation of the tomographic results and to subject the obtained results to a quantitative analysis.
The survey is applied to the Egyptian naophorous statue of Amenmes and Reshpu, which dates to the reign of Ramses II (1279-1213 BC) or later and is now preserved in the Civic Archaeological Museum in Bologna. In order to evaluate the internal persistency of fractures and visible damages, a 3D Ultrasonic Tomographic Imaging (UTI) test has been performed and a multi-sensor survey (image and range based) was conducted, in order to evaluate the locations of the source and receiver points as accurate as possible
The presented test allowed to evaluate the material characteristics, its porosity and degradation state, which particularly affect the lower part of the statue. More in general, the project demonstrated how solution coming from the field of 3D modelling of Cultural Heritage allow the application of 3D ultrasonic tomography also on objects with complex shapes, in addition to the improved representation of the obtained results
Film cooling adiabatic effectiveness measurements of pressure side trailing edge cooling configurations
Nowadays total inlet temperature of gas turbine is far above the permissible metal temperature; as a consequence, advanced cooling techniques must be applied to protect from thermal stresses, oxidation and corrosion the components located in the high pressure stages, such as the blade trailing edge. A suitable design of the cooling system for the trailing edge has to cope with geometric constraints and aerodynamic demands; state-of-the-art of cooling concepts often use film cooling on blade pressure side: the air taken from last compressor stages is ejected through discrete holes or slots to provide a cold layer between hot mainstream and the blade surface. With the goal of ensuring a satisfactory lifetime of blades, the design of efficient trailing edge film cooling schemes and, moreover, the possibility to check carefully their behavior, are hence necessary to guarantee an appropriate metal temperature distribution. For this purpose an experimental survey was carried out to investigate the film covering performance of different pressure side trailing edge cooling systems for turbine blades. The experimental test section consists of a scaled-up trailing edge model installed in an open loop suction type test rig. Measurements of adiabatic effectiveness distributions were carried out on three trailing edge cooling system configurations. The baseline geometry is composed by inclined slots separated by elongated pedestals; the second geometry shares the same cutback configuration, with an additional row of circular film cooling holes located upstream; the third model is equipped with three rows of in-line film cooling holes. Experiments have been performed at nearly ambient conditions imposing several blowing ratio values and using carbon dioxide as coolant in order to reproduce a density ratio close to the engine conditions (DR=1.52). To extend the validity of the survey a comparison between adiabatic effectiveness measurements and a prediction by correlative approach was performed to compare the experimental results with 1D methodologies
Anomalous development of the inferior vena cava: Case reports of agenesis and hypoplasia
we reported the cases of two adult male patients who were admitted to our emergency room with abdominal pain and dyspnea caused by gallstones and pulmonary embolism respectively. during the radiological investigations, as collateral findings, we found two anomalous development of the inferior vena cava. these conditions affect about 4% of population and, although asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic, are associated with thrombotic manifestations as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. the prompt recognition of these anomalies is necessary in order to prevent the complications associated with these conditions and to set the best therapy for patients
Xâray Tomography Unveils the Construction Technique of UnâMontuâs Egyptian Coffin (Early 26th Dynasty)
The Bologna Archaeological Museum, in cooperation with prestigious Italian universities, institutions, and independent scholars, recently began a vast investigation programme on a group of Egyptian coffins of Theban provenance dating to the first millennium BC, primarily the 25thâ26th Dynasty (c. 746â525 BC). Herein, we present the results of the multidisciplinary investigation car-ried out on one of these coffins before its restoration intervention: the anthropoid wooden coffin of UnâMontu (Inv. MCABo EG1960). The integration of radiocarbon dating, wood species identifica-tion, and CT imaging enabled a deep understanding of the coffinâs wooden structure. In particular, we discuss the results of the tomographic investigation performed in situ. The use of a transportable Xâray facility largely reduced the risks associated with the transfer of the large object (1.80 cm tall) out of the museum without compromising image quality. Thanks to the 3D tomographic imaging, the coffin revealed the secrets of its construction technique, from the rational use of wood to the employment of canvas (incamottatura), from the use of dowels to the assembly procedure
Predicting the costs of managing patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
SummaryThe economic consequences of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are considerable, although the factors that best predict costs are largely unknown. This study used a population-based cohort to identify the clinical factors during an index year that were most predictive of increased direct medical costs in the subsequent year, and to develop a predictive model that described the cost variations in COPD.The medical records of 2116 patients enrolled in one regional health system who had COPD and healthcare resource utilisation data for 1998 and 1999, were abstracted for information about symptoms, smoking history, chronic illnesses, and pulmonary function data. All inpatient, outpatient and pharmacy utilisation data for each subject for 1999 were extracted from the database. Total costs for each individual were transformed to a log scale. Potential causes of cost variability (predictor variables) were defined and classified into sets (or domains). Multiple linear regression models were fitted for each domain. The study demonstrated that severity of airflow obstruction, as assessed by FEV1% predicted, is a significant but weak predictor of future healthcare resource utilisationâprior hospitalisation and home oxygen use, the presence of comorbid conditions and symptoms of dyspnoea are better predictors of costs. Those interested in the economic benefits of new COPD treatments and disease management programs need to carefully account for these factors

Predicting delay factors when chipping wood at forest roadside landings
Chipping of bulky biomass assortments at roadside landings is a common and costly step in the biomass-to-energy supply chain. This operation normally involves one chipping unit and one or several transport trucks working together for simultaneous chipping and chip transport to a terminal or end user. Reducing the delay factors in these operations is a relevant ambition for lowering supply costs. A method to estimate organizational delay based on: (1) the capacity ratio between the transport and the chipper, (2) the use of buffer storage, and (3) the number of transport units involved is suggested here. Other delays will also be present, and some of these may relate to the working conditions at the landing. A method to set a landing functionality index based on characteristics of the forest landing is also suggested. A total of 14 roadside chipping operations were assessed and the operators were interviewed to address the impact of machinery configuration and landing characteristics on machine utilization. At most sites, the chipper was the more productive part, and the chipper utilization was to a large extent limited by organizational delay. Still the utilization of the transport units varied between 37 and 97%, of which some 36% of the variation was explained by the landing functionality index. Knowledge from the work presented here should be a good starting point for improving biomass supply planning and supply chain configuration.acceptedVersio
