The effect of mixed fertilizers containing little or no calcium or sulfur on seed cotton yields

During the 1980 and 1981 crop seasons, two experiments were conducted on a Coring silt loam, a typic Fragiudalf, at Ames Plantation and a Collins silt loam, an aquic Udifluvent, at the Milan Experiment Station to determine the effect of fertilizers containing little or no calcium or sulfur on cotton yield and on the cotton leaf levels of sulfur, calcium, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium. The only differences between the two experiments, which were adjacent to each other, were that one experiment utilized mechanical weed control while the other experiment utilized chemical weed control. Both experiments had six fertilizer treatments replicated four times at Ames and six times at Milan. Each experimental plot consisted of four 102 cm rows 9.15 m long. The fertilizer treatments used potassium sulfate and potassium chloride as potassium sources. Ordinary superphosphate and diamonnium phosphorus were the phosphorus sources. The phosphorus was applied in rates of 29 and 59 kg of phosphorus/ha. Varying the potassium source and the phosphorus source and level resulted in different amounts of sulfur and calcium applied. The youngest mature leaves were sampled at initial bloom stage from the two inner rows of the four row plots. Yield data were obtained by harvesting the two inside rows. None of the treatments had a significant effect on the seed cotton yields. Comparisons between the seed cotton yields of the experiments without herbicide and with herbicide showed that the yields without herbicide were greater than the yields with herbicide. This effect occurred both years at Ames and one year at Milan. The cotton leaves when analyzed for sulfur, calcium, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium showed many significant differences due to the different fertilizer treatments

Social Networks across Chignecto: Applying Social Network Analysis to Acadie, Mi’kma’ki, and Nova Scotia, 1670-1751

This article examines the Acadian community of Beaubassin with a view to better understanding its social hierarchy and the relationships between colonists and their Mi’kmaq neighbours during the period up to 1751. Beaubassin has long been the least understood Acadian community, due in part to its distance from the colonial capital at Port Royal and also because its parish registers are not complete. However, social network analysis can provide new insights. The authors study families across generations, re-interpret a local witchcraft trial, and take a fresh look at the presence of Aboriginal peoples, determining that Beaubassin was a community of growing complexity and with stronger connections to the Mi’kmaq than previously understood.

    MRI Techniques for Cardiovascular Imaging

    Get PDF
Over the last several years, cardiovascular MRI has benefited from a number of technical advances which have improved routine clinical imaging techniques. As a result, MRI is now well positioned to realize its longstanding promise of becoming the comprehensive cardiac imaging test of choice in many clinical settings. This may be achieved using a combination of basic advanced techniques. In this overview, the basic cardiac MRI techniques which are clinically useful are reviewed, and the recent technical advances which are clinically promising are described. These advances include routine black blood and cine bright blood techniques that are high speed (slice), multislice whole heart perfusion imaging methods, and recently emerging real-time imaging methodologies. Deprovincialization: Its Importance for Plural Societies

Deprovincialization is a set of attitudes characterized by two sides: a nuanced and fresh perspective on the in-group culture and an open and accepting attitude toward other groups. After reviewing early research and indirect tests of the construct, we focused our attention on research investigating these two sides of deprovincialization. Studies conducted in various countries demonstrate that deprovincialization as in-group cultural nuance is a strong and reliable correlate of reduced prejudice and improved intergroup relations; moreover, it is distinct from both national identification and cultural relativism. Studies conducted in Italy show that deprovincialization as openness toward other groups is related to positive intergroup contact and intergroup harmony and has longitudinal negative effects on prejudice. Importantly, in both lines of research the beneficial role of deprovincialization goes beyond the effects of constructs such as social dominance orientation, right-wing authoritarianism, nationalism, and demographic variables. We conclude by proposing suggestions for future research and highlighting relevant issues to be considered in policy development and implementation
