A new method for quantification of hepatobiliary scintigraphy using 99mTc-mebrofenin. A comparative study

A method based upon the application of mathematical techniques of deconvolution on the classical compartmental model for the quantitative study of liver function from hepatobiliary scintigraphy using 99mTc-mebrofenin data is proposed. The theory in which the method is based upon is presented and a comparison with a published methodology of obtaining the hepatic extraction after scintigraphic sudies has been performed using the results on 36 rats studies obtained with the two methods. A highly significant correlation between the two techniques was verified. The characteristics of the two methodologies, the proposed one based upon a theoretical approach and the other one on an empirical approximation are discussed. Comments are made on the interest and limitations of the presented technique that may be an useful tool for the evaluation of hepatic insufficiency

Progressivity in the Portuguese personal income tax system

This Work Project analyzes the evolution of the Portuguese personal income tax system’s progressivity over the period of 2005 through 2013. It presents the first computation of cardinal progressivity measures using administrative tax data for Portugal. We compute several progressivity indices and find that progressivity has had very modest variations from 2005 to 2012, whilst from 2012 to 2013 there has been a relatively stronger decrease, excluding the impact of the income tax surcharge of the years 2012 and 2013. When this latter is included, progressivity of 2012 and 2013 decreases considerably. Analyzing the effective average tax rates of the top income percentiles in the income scale, we find that these rates have increased over the period 2010–2013, suggesting that an analysis of effective tax rates is insufficient to assess progressivity in the whole tax scheme

Impact of the fear of Covid-19 on perceptions of physical shopping convenience and consumer behaviour in Portugal

The aim of this study is top rovide an insight of the fear of Covid-19 felt by the Portuguese and how it impacted their perceptions of physical shopping convenience and consumer behaviour. Specifically, utilitarian and hedonic shopping, the likelihood of stockpiling products and the probability to change the offline shopping to online channels. Statistical evidence was found that fear does influence consumer perceptions and behaviours. Results of this study can be used by companies to better understand customers’ reactions to fear-induced situations and quickly adapt to these changes

The role of target membrane sialic acid residues in the fusion activity of the influenza virus: the effect of two types of ganglioside on the kinetics of membrane merging

The influenza virus enters target cells via the action of hemagglutinin proteins (HA) inserted into the viral envelope. HA promotes membrane fusion between the viral envelope and endosomal membrane at low pH, following viral binding to sialic acid-containing receptors on target cells, and internalization by endocytosis. The effect of target membrane sialic acid residues on the fusion activity of the influenza virus towards model membranes was evaluated by both reduction, (i.e. treating somatic cells with neuraminidase- (NA-) prior to virus-cell interactions), and by supplementing liposomes with the gangliosides GD1a and GT1b. The harshness of the neuraminidase pretreatment of target cells required to affect virus-induced membrane merging was found to greatly depend on the assay conditions, i.e. whether a virus-cell prebinding step at neutral pH was included prior to acidification. Minor concentrations of neuraminidase were found to greatly reduce virus fusion, but only in the absence of a prebinding step; they had no effect if this step was included. Although membrane merging was greatly reduced following cell neuraminidase pretreatment, virus-cell association at low pH was not disturbed proportionately. This probably reflects unspecific virus-cell binding under these conditions, probably of inactivated or aggregated virus particles, which does not translate into membrane merging. This seems to suggest both that target membrane sialic acid can protect the virus from losing its activity before triggering membrane merging, and that the importance of this interaction is not merely to ensure virus-target proximity. With liposomes, we found that both types of ganglioside supported efficient fusion, with GD1a promoting a slightly faster initial rate. However, in this case, virus-target proximity closely mirrored fusion activity, thus pointing to differential specificity between targets routinely used to assay influenza virus fusion activit

Dans le cadre des grandes entreprises familiales de Lisbonne, il existe une distinction très claire entre famille et affaires : les affaires sont clairement du domaine des hommes et la famille est l’affaire des femmes. Basée sur un travail de recherche empirique réalisé auprès de sept grandes familles d’entrepreneurs de Lisbonne, cet article a pour objectif d’analyser la façon dont les distinctions de genre mentionnées (imposées dans un contexte social caractérisé par un fort accent symbolique mis sur la lignée mâle) s’installent au quotidien, donnant naissance à une situation de complémentarité où les hommes et les femmes participent au projet économique qu’ils partagent.Cet argument est illustré sur la base de l’analyse des processus à travers lesquels les femmes, bien qu’écartées d’une participation active dans la vie professionnelle de leurs entreprises, jouent un rôle fondamental dans le maintien des relations sociales à l’intérieur du groupe social d’élite auquel elles appartiennent, acquérant ainsi une importance décisive dans la continuité du projet économique familial.No âmbito das grandes empresas familiares de Lisboa há uma distinção muito clara entre família e negócios : os negócios são, claramente, um assunto de homens e a família é um assunto de mulheres. Based on empirical research in seven large business families in Lisbon, this article aims to analyse how the referred gender differences (which are set in a social context marked by a symbolic emphasis on male descent) are handled on a day-to-day basis, giving rise to a situation where there is complementarity between the manner in which men and women participate in the economic enterprise they share.This argument is illustrated by analysing the processes through which the women, although they are unable to participate actively in the professional life of their companies, perform a fundamental role in maintaining the social relations within the elite social group to which they belong, thus being of decisive importance in continuing their families’ economic enterprises

"On dirait que l'humanité ignore ce que sont les musées et à quoi ils servent réelment."  Mário E. Teruggi, um dos animadores da Mesa Redonda de Santiago do Chile de Maio de 1972, é o autor desta frase publicada num artigo da revista Museum dedicado à América Latina e que me parece que de alguma maneira reflecte a situação dos museus perante a sociedade, nos inícios dos anos setenta. De facto, esta reunião internacional, que juntou pela primeira vez museólogos com outros especialistas para discutir o papel dos museus na América Latina, foi considerada por Raymonde Frin como uma nova experiência no que respeita a este tipo de encontros internacionais promovidos pela UNESCO. O carácter interdisciplinar desta reunião, fez com que os museólogos fossem confrontados com outros problemas, levantados pelos outros participantes, como as condições de vida das populações na América Latina o que obrigou aqueles a tomarem consciência do muito pouco ou quase nada que se tem feito nos museus sobre esta área e revelar de facto o divórcio existente entre o Museu e a Comunidade. Por outro lado, os museólogos sentiram que o seu trabalho produzido nos museus, não era insensível às questões económico-sociais como servia essencialmente para sua satisfação, e não era propriamente acessível às populações a quem se destinavam
