Grand Jury Subpoenas to Defense Attorneys Representing Targets: An Ethical-Legal Tug of War

    Get PDF
This Comment will first explore the problems associated with grand jury subpoenas to defense attorneys, and then move on to examine the role of the grand jury in the criminal justice system. The Comment will then survey previous approaches to the problem and their deficiencies, following which it will focus on the new ethical rule and its ramifications for the grand jury process. Finally, it will will suggest alternatives to the current approaches

Lebanon: A Case of History Education in a Sectarian Society

    Get PDF
This paper synthesizes the extant literature on history education in Lebanon.  The sectarian nature of the country and the recent civil war make the case of Lebanon a unique and compelling one.  Three emerging understandings underscore the complexity of history education in Lebanon.  First, Lebanon has a tradition of parochial or confessional schools dating back to the hands-off approach of the Ottoman colonial powers.  Second, the delay of a state-sanctioned national curriculum has paralyzed educators who have been left to piece together their own curriculum.  Third, the political gridlock of the country continues to make history education a contentious topic.

Initial MLU Predicts the Relative Efficacy of Two Grammatical Treatments in Preschoolers With Specific Language Impairments

    Get PDF
Purpose—We sought to confirm predictions based on past findings that pre-treatment mean length of utterance (MLU) would predict which of two grammatical treatments would best facilitate generalized and maintained grammatical development in preschoolers with specific language impairment (SLI). Method—The participants were 57 preschoolers with specific language impairment (SLI). A randomized group experiment was used. The two grammatical treatments were Broad Target Recasts (BTR) and Milieu Language Teaching (MLT). MLU was assessed at Time 1 in two conversational language samples. Growth rate of productive grammar was quantified using growth curve modeling on the Index of Productive Syntax (IPSyn) from two conversational language samples at each of 6 measurement periods. Results—Predictions were confirmed for children with initially low MLU, but not for children with initially high MLUs. MLT facilitated growth of grammar better than BTR in children who were initially in Brown’s stage I. Effects maintained 5 months after treatment ended

A strain-space plasticity theory and numerical implementation

    Get PDF
This thesis sets forth an alternate version of plasticity which closely parallels the traditional theory but interchanges the roles of stress and strain. As a result, the new formulation gives stress as a functional of strain, rather than the reverse, and is thus attuned to the needs of the dynamicist. In the case of a single loading surface, the two versions of plasticity are shown to be equivalent when the model parameters are appropriately selected. A similar though less satisfying result is obtained for formulations involving a plurality of loading surfaces. The strain-space formulation is coded for numerical solution, with provision for a variable number of loading surfaces. The numerical algorithm is tested for accuracy in the handling of perfect plasticity, and the results are compared with those given by three commonly-used stress-space algorithms. The new algorithm is then interfaced with a finite element code and used to study the response of a foundation resting on an elastoplastic half-space

Safety and Health in Biomass Production, Transportation, and Storage: A Commentary Based on the Biomass and Biofuels Session at the 2013 North American Agricultural Safety Summit

    Get PDF
There is significant interest in biomass production ranging from government agencies to the private sector, both inside and outside of the traditional production agricultural setting. This interest has led to an increase in the development and production of biomass crops. Much of this effort has focused on specific segments of the process, and more specifically on the mechanics of these individual segments. From a review of scientific literature, it is seen that little effort has been put into identifying, classifying and preventing safety hazards in on-farm biomass production systems. This commentary describes the current status of the knowledge pertaining to health and safety factors of biomass production and storage in the US and identifies areas of standards development that the biomass industry needs from the agricultural safety and health community

Implementation of a two-equation k-omega turbulence model in NPARC

    Get PDF
The implementation of a two-equation k-omega turbulence model into the NPARC flow solver is described. Motivation for the selection of this model is given, major code modifications are outlined, new imputs to the code are described, and results are presented for several validation cases: an incompressible flow over a smooth flat plate, a subsonic diffuser flow, and a shock-induced separated flow. Comparison of results with the k-epsilon model indicate that the k-omega model predicts simple flows equally well whereas, for adverse pressure gradient flows, the k-omega model outperforms the other turbulence models in NPARC
