BACKGROUND: There is strong evidence that an individual's genetic background is an important predisposing factor to longevity. In the present study we analysed the frequency of HLA class I, class II, as well as the TNF-α -308 polymorphism that may be related to an increased life span in Mexican Mestizo healthy elders. RESULTS: HLA typing was performed by polymerase chain reaction sequence specific oligonucleotide (PCR SSO) reverse dot blot. The TNF-α -308 polymorphism was assessed by PCR restriction fragment length polymorphism. A significant increased frequency of HLA-DRB1*11 was found in elderly women whereas this allele was not present in elderly males. The TNF2 allele was also increased in the elder group when compared to young controls. The frequencies of the remaining alleles tested were not statistically different among groups. CONCLUSION: These data suggest an ethnicity independent tendency of HLA-DRB1*11 in elder females to increase life span and a possible role of the TNF2 allele with the successful remodelling of senescent immune system

This article explains the reasons why the television debate held between Rajoy and Rubalcaba in November,2011 was not a real discursive event in the French media. At the same time, it is explained which was the real echo that the confrontation left in the French digital media. To do this, it is analysed the french media discourse with the help of methods and indicators that deal with the statistics related to the number of words and their concurrence within a text.peerReviewe

B.C. (before Covid): How libraries build community resilience throughout disasters through roles and services

    Get PDF
Both policy and research point to the critical roles information and communication play in community resilience. Empirical and anecdotal evidence show the vital roles that public libraries play during disasters. However, few studies have explicitly looked at the roles libraries can play and services public libraries can provide to enhance community resilience across multiple disaster types. In order to understand how libraries respond in a Covid 19 world, it is critical we understand how they responded B.C. or Before Covid 19. This research explored community resilience within the context of public libraries and how they, as FEMA-designated essential community organizations, might enhance community resilience. Specifically, this research identified, defined, and clarified the roles and services played by public libraries across different types of disasters. These findings give guidance for how we should train information professionals

In the Blood: Repressing Reproduction in the French Convent from Sanguinity to Sexuality

This project examines the French convent as a convergent point of evolving blood myths in the eighteenth century. According to Michel Foucault, as a society transitions from sovereign power to more liberal forms of government, the target of how power is enforced shifts as well: from the punishment of individuals who pose a threat to the crown to the regulation of perceived “deviants” who threaten the health and stability of the nation’s population. As the eighteenth century was a time of radical social change, the era encapsulates a prime moment for the study of continuities and discontinuities of these various forms of power. The longstanding tradition of patriarchal power from the highest political ranks down to the family unit remains steady and relatively uncontested. Yet while France is careening towards the Revolution in 1789, it is at the same time experiencing rampant colonialism: thus the idea of race is introduced into the regulation of deviance at the same time that the idea of social class is being violently challenged and reconstituted. However, the contrasting continuity of male dominance with the discontinuity of the social importance of class and race in the eighteenth century share one important commonality, and that is blood. In the corpus that I analyze in this project, the convent serves as an alternative fate for those deemed unfit for reproduction due to the threat that they pose to the purity of blood: familial, noble, and finally racial. I have chosen works by Claudine Guérin de Tencin, Denis Diderot, Boutet de Monvel, and Claire de Duras dating from 1735 to 1823 that trace this evolution of reproductive repression in both forms: sanguine (against the individual) and sexual (for the population)

Program Evaluation in the Nonprofit Sector : An Exploratory Study of Leaders\u27 Perceptions

    Get PDF
The purpose of the study was to understand the role of and capacity for program evaluation from the perspectives of leaders in the Northeast Florida nonprofit sector. The study was a two-phased qualitative design and had three research questions related to the role of program evaluation, the capacity for program evaluation, and the influence of the relationship between providers and funders on these efforts. The first phase was a nominal group process using the Delphi survey method. The second phase involved in-depth interviews. Study participants were chosen based on specific criteria. The Delphi phase had four rounds of surveys. Findings from the Delphi phase of the study indicated that leaders in Northeast Florida perceived there were eight distinct roles of program evaluation. The roles included assessing impact of programs, advancing organizational learning, cultivating funding collaborations, informing program management decisions, enhancing communication with multiple stakeholders, facilitating quality assurance, determining resource allocation, and validating organizational credibility. Findings regarding the essential capacity elements needed for program evaluation efforts included having sufficient time, sufficient financial resources, a positive culture, functional program evaluation designs/methods, sufficient human resources, realistic expectations from the philanthropic community, ongoing collaboration, and ongoing training. Study participants reported that these capacity elements were lacking in the Northeast Florida nonprofit sector. Interviews produced similar findings as the Delphi survey. In particular, the use of reflective practice as a role within program evaluation efforts and as a program evaluation approach were core topics of interviews. Additional findings from the study were related to program evaluation capacity development strategies, the dynamics of the relationships between providers and funders, and the influence of these variables on the culture of the Northeast Florida nonprofit sector
