    Implementing High-Speed String Matching Hardware for Network Intrusion Detection Systems

    This paper presents high-throughput techniques for implementing FSM based string matching hardware on FPGAs. By taking advantage of the fact that string matching operations for different packets are independent, a novel multi-threading FSM design is presented, which dramatically increases the FSM frequency and the throughput of string matching operations. In addition, design techniques for high-speed interconnect and interface circuits for the proposed FSM are also presented. Experimental results conducted on FPGA platforms are presented to study the effectiveness of the proposed techniques and explore the trade-offs between system performance, strings partition granularity and hardware resource cost

    Hearing at the Mall: Multibeam Processing Technology Improves Hearing Group Conversations in a Real-World Food Court Environment

    How can hearing aids make group conversations easier in noisy public spaces? Hearing aids often struggle to help users follow conversations in noisy, real-world environments like busy food courts. This study found that a new hearing aid technology using multiple adaptive beams to track different speakers improved users\u27 ability to understand and focus on group conversations in a mall food court setting. These results suggest that advancements in hearing aid algorithms that account for the natural head movements and multiple conversation partners could significantly enhance the listening experience for people with hearing loss in challenging everyday situations

    The Relationship between Serum Zinc Level and Liver Elastrography Using Fibroscan in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Patients

    BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Zinc is one of the essential elements for many vital functions of the body, including regulation of gene expression, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity, protein and nucleic acids metabolism. Since, many people develop advanced liver disease, including liver cirrhosis, they have zinc deficiency. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between liver stiffness and serum zinc levels in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed on 40 non-alcoholic fatty liver disease Patients referring to Imam Khomeini Hospital in Ahvaz in 1395. Serum zinc levels and liver Stiffness (based on METAVIR scale) were measured by fibroscan, and Age, sex, serum zinc level and liver fibroscan were recorded. Serum zinc level at different ages and scores of Liver stiffness was compared and analyzed. FINDINGS: This study was conducted on 40 patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The number of men was 26 patients (65%). Mean age of patients was 45.077±9.4 years, mean serum zinc level was 81.4±8.1 and mean liver stiffness was 6.5±2.1 kPa. Serum zinc level had a reverse and strong correlation with liver stiffness (p=0.0001, r=0.9). Also, with age increasing, liver stiffness increased (p=0.01, r=0.5) and serum zinc level decreased (p=0.01, r=0.5). CONCLUSION: According to findings of the present study, the serum zinc level significantly decreased with fibrosis progression in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver

    Multiple-Point and Multiple-Time Correlations Functions in a Hard-Sphere Fluid

    A recent mode coupling theory of higher-order correlation functions is tested on a simple hard-sphere fluid system at intermediate densities. Multi-point and multi-time correlation functions of the densities of conserved variables are calculated in the hydrodynamic limit and compared to results obtained from event-based molecular dynamics simulations. It is demonstrated that the mode coupling theory results are in excellent agreement with the simulation results provided that dissipative couplings are included in the vertices appearing in the theory. In contrast, simplified mode coupling theories in which the densities obey Gaussian statistics neglect important contributions to both the multi-point and multi-time correlation functions on all time scales.Comment: Second one in a sequence of two (in the first, the formalism was developed). 12 pages REVTeX. 5 figures (eps).     Cyanoacrylate closure for peripheral veins: Consensus document of the Australasian College of Phlebology

    Background: Cyanoacrylates are fast-acting adhesives used in procedural medicine including closure of superficial wounds, embolization of truncal vessels pre-operatively, vascular anomalies, visceral false aneurysms, endoleaks, gastrointestinal varices and gastrointestinal bleeding. More recently, catheter-directed cyanoacrylate adhesive closure was introduced as an alternative to endovenous thermal ablation (ETA) to occlude superficial veins of the lower limbs. Objectives: To formulate policies for the safe and effective delivery of cyanoacrylate adhesive closure procedures in Australasia, based on current experience and evidence. Methods: A panel of phlebologists including vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists, dermatologists and research scientists systematically reviewed the available data on cyanoacrylate products used in medicine and shared personal experience with the procedure. The reviewed material included bibliographic and biomedical data, material safety data sheets and data requested and received from manufacturers. Results and recommendations: Cyanoacrylate adhesive closure appears to be an effective treatment for saphenous reflux with occlusion rates at 36 months of 90–95%. We recommend a maximum dose of 10 mL of cyanoacrylate per treatment session. Serious complications are rare, but significant. Hypersensitivity to acrylates is reported in 2.4% of the population and is an important absolute contraindication to cyanoacrylate adhesive closure.1 Post-procedural inflammatory reactions, including hypersensitivity-type phlebitis, occur in 10–20% of patients.2 In the long term, cyanoacrylate adhesive closure results in foreign-body granuloma formation within 2–12 months of the procedure. We recommend against the use of cyanoacrylate adhesive closure in patients with uncontrolled inflammatory, autoimmune or granulomatous disorders (e.g. sarcoidosis). Caution should be exercised in patients with significant active systemic disease or infection and alternative therapies such as thermal ablation and foam sclerotherapy should be considered. Conclusions: Cyanoacrylate adhesive closure appears to be an effective endovenous procedure, with short-term closure rates comparable to ETA and therefore greater efficacy than traditional surgery for treating superficial veins of the lower limbs. Ongoing data collection is required to establish the long-term safety

    Crowd guilds: Worker-led reputation and feedback on crowdsourcing platforms

    Crowd workers are distributed and decentralized. While decentralization is designed to utilize independent judgment to promote high-quality results, it paradoxically undercuts behaviors and institutions that are critical to high-quality work. Reputation is one central example: crowdsourcing systems depend on reputation scores from decentralized workers and requesters, but these scores are notoriously inflated and uninformative. In this paper, we draw inspiration from historical worker guilds (e.g., in the silk trade) to design and implement crowd guilds: centralized groups of crowd workers who collectively certify each other’s quality through double-blind peer assessment. A two-week field experiment compared crowd guilds to a traditional decentralized crowd work model. Crowd guilds produced reputation signals more strongly correlated with ground-truth worker quality than signals available on current crowd working platforms, and more accurate than in the traditional model

    Practice Models and Challenges in Teledermatology: A Study of Collective Experiences from Teledermatologists

    Despite increasing practice of teledermatology in the U.S., teledermatology practice models and real-world challenges are rarely studied.The primary objective was to examine teledermatology practice models and shared challenges among teledermatologists in California, focusing on practice operations, reimbursement considerations, barriers to sustainability, and incentives. We conducted in-depth interviews with teledermatologists that practiced store-and-forward or live-interactive teledermatology from January 1, 2007 through March 30, 2011 in California.Seventeen teledermatologists from academia, private practice, health maintenance organizations, and county settings participated in the study. Among them, 76% practiced store-and-forward only, 6% practiced live-interactive only, and 18% practiced both modalities. Only 29% received structured training in teledermatology. The average number of years practicing teledermatology was 4.29 years (SD±2.81). Approximately 47% of teledermatologists served at least one Federally Qualified Health Center. Over 75% of patients seen via teledermatology were at or below 200% federal poverty level and usually lived in rural regions without dermatologist access. Practice challenges were identified in the following areas. Teledermatologists faced delays in reimbursements and non-reimbursement of teledermatology services. The primary reason for operational inefficiency was poor image quality and/or inadequate history. Costly and inefficient software platforms and lack of communication with referring providers also presented barriers.Teledermatology enables underserved populations to access specialty care. Improvements in reimbursement mechanisms, efficient technology platforms, communication with referring providers, and teledermatology training are necessary to support sustainable practices

    Essential role of microfibrillar-associated protein 4 in human cutaneous homeostasis and in its photoprotection

    UVB-induced cutaneous photodamage/photoaging is characterized by qualitative and quantitative deterioration in dermal extracellular matrix (ECM) components such as collagen and elastic fibers. Disappearance of microfibrillar-associated protein 4 (MFAP-4), a possible limiting factor for cutaneous elasticity, was documented in photoaged dermis, but its function is poorly understood. To characterize its possible contribution to photoprotection, MFAP-4 expression was either augmented or inhibited in a human skin xenograft photodamage murine model and human fibroblasts. Xenografted skin with enhanced MFAP-4 expression was protected from UVB-induced photodamage/photoaging accompanied by the prevention of ECM degradation and aggravated elasticity. Additionally, remarkably increased or decreased fibrillin-1-based microfibril development was observed when fibroblasts were treated with recombinant MFAP-4 or with MFAP-4-specific siRNA, respectively. Immunoprecipitation analysis confirmed direct interaction between MFAP-4 and fibrillin-1. Taken together, our findings reveal the essential role of MFAP-4 in photoprotection and offer new therapeutic opportunities to prevent skin-associated pathologies
