    Rural Employment At A Glance

    Get PDF
Rural Employment At A Glance is a six-page brochure that highlights the most recent indicators of employment and unemployment in rural areas. It documents changes and differences in metro and nonmetro employment growth, unemployment, earnings per job, and occupational mix, as well as differences across nonmetro areas by location and county type.employment, unemployment, metro, nonmetro, rural, urban, earnings, occupation, employment growth, unemployment rate, Community/Rural/Urban Development, Crop Production/Industries,

Transitions to Entrepreneurship and Industry-Specific Barriers

    Get PDF
Drivers of entrepreneurial entry are investigated in this study by examining how entry into small-business ownership is shaped by industry-specific constraints. The human- and financial-capital endowments of potential entrepreneurs entering firms in various industries are shown to differ profoundly, depending on the type of venture entered. The educational credentials of highly educated potential entrepreneurs, in particular, predict avoidance of small-firm ownership in some industries as well as attraction to others. Recognizing that individuals choose an industry sector jointly with their decision to enter entrepreneurship, we find that the conventional practice of conflating different industry types in empirical analyses of transitions to entrepreneurship generates misleading findings about the determinants of entrepreneurship.entrepreneurship, self-employment, capital constraints, transitions, entry barriers, business start-ups

    Stonehenge remodelled

    Get PDF
We are pleased to present the latest account of the sequence of burial and construction at the site of Stonehenge, deduced by its most recent excavators and anchored in time by the application of Bayesian radiocarbon modelling. Five prehistoric stages are proposed, of varied duration, and related by our authors to neighbouring monuments in the Stonehenge environs. While it may never be possible to produce a definitive chronology for this most complex of monuments, the comprehensive and integrated achievement owed to these researchers has brought us much closer to that goal. It is from this firm platform that Stonehenge can begin its new era of communication with the public at large

Effect Of Mergers And Acquisitions On Stockholders And The Economy

The size and volume of takeover activity has increased astronomically since the frenzy of current takeover activity began with the 1974 raid on ESB, Inc. in Philadelphia. Since then we have witnessed the growth of the raider financing tool: the junk bond. This high yield but incredibly risky bond has helped finance some of the largest mergers and acquisitions in history. The risk has not driven away investors looking for substantial fast earnings. The demand for these so called bellow-investment-grade bonds continue to grow. Are these bonds causing companies to take on too much debt to finance takeovers? Does this frenzy of takeover activity do more harm than good to shareholders, employees, the capital markets, and the economy as a whole? From the research I have done, I have determined that there are no hard and fast rules to provide the answer to these questions. There is little concrete proof that mergers and acquisitions are good or bad. Some mergers and acquisitions will be beneficial, others will not. To find the answer, you must evaluate the effects on a company by company basis.

Mean Performance Optimization of an Orbiting Distributed Aperture by Warped Aperture Image Plane Comparisons

    Get PDF
This work models the aggregate performance of satellite receiver formations functioning as orbiting interferometers as compared to filled apertures of similar geometries. These models facilitate selecting initial conditions for formations such that their control-free dynamics yield interferometry performance with minimal errors as compared to the filled apertures. The solution method draws on the dynamic models of an orbiting planar satellite formation to define the size and shape of a reference aperture and to define the degrees of freedom for the formation members. The paths of formation elements yield geometries for which the aggregate performance of the array of discrete receivers may be calculated. The objective of the optimization process is therefore minimizing the time-average square of the difference between the filled aperture\u27s intensity map and that generated by the discrete receiver array. This yields a formation whose configuration offers minimum errors for imaging processes beginning at any arbitrary start time. The problem as posed is non-convex, and requires implementation of a global search method. Genetic algorithms are used. The solution method includes a new analytic solution for the intensity map of an elliptical aperture and a technique for generalizing this solution to include the effect of non-ideal viewing geometries

Trudging the Road of Happy Destiny: The Gift Economy in Early Alcoholics Anonymous History and the Creation of The Big Book

    Get PDF
In 1939, Bill Wilson and his peers published Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How Many Thousands of Men and Women Have Recovered from Alcoholism, and in doing so, codified a spiritual gift economy through which millions of people have recovered from alcoholism and other addictions. This project examines the pragmatic formulation of this economy and argues its origins were driven as much by self-interest as altruism. It further explores the syncretic leadership of Bill Wilson and his mark on The Big Book

Is nedocromil effective in preventing asthmatic attacks in patients with asthma?

    Get PDF
In general, about 50% to 70% of patients respond to nedocromil (SOR: A, multiple RCTs and meta-analyses). Unfortunately, which patients respond is not predictable from clinical parameters. Nedocromil is worth trying in mild persistent asthma, particularly for children where the parents are worried about the growth issues associated with inhaled steroids. Side effects (sore throat, nausea, and headache) are mild and infrequent. Maximal efficacy is usually seen after 6 to 8 weeks

Vinyl pyridines including vinyl stilbazole materials and vinyl styrylpyridine oligomer materials are disclosed. These vinylpyridines form copolymers with bismaleimides which copolymers have good fire retardancy and decreased brittleness. The cure temperatures of the copolymers are substantially below the cure temperatures of the bismaleimides alone. Reinforced composites made from the cured copolymers are disclosed as well
