Finite-size scaling considerations on the ground state microcanonical temperature in entropic sampling simulations
In this work we discuss the behavior of the microcanonical temperature
obtained by means of numerical entropic
sampling studies. It is observed that in almost all cases the slope of the
logarithm of the density of states is not infinite in the ground state,
since as expected it should be directly related to the inverse temperature
. Here we show that these finite slopes are in fact due to
finite-size effects and we propose an analytic expression for the
behavior of when . To
test this idea we use three distinct two-dimensional square lattice models
presenting second-order phase transitions. We calculated by exact means the
parameters and for the two-states Ising model and for the and
states Potts model and compared with the results obtained by entropic sampling
simulations. We found an excellent agreement between exact and numerical
values. We argue that this new set of parameters and represents an
interesting novel issue of investigation in entropic sampling studies for
different models
PPM-Decay: A computational model of auditory prediction with memory decay
Statistical learning and probabilistic prediction are fundamental processes in auditory cognition. A prominent computational model of these processes is Prediction by Partial Matching (PPM), a variable-order Markov model that learns by internalizing n-grams from training sequences. However, PPM has limitations as a cognitive model: in particular, it has a perfect memory that weights all historic observations equally, which is inconsistent with memory capacity constraints and recency effects observed in human cognition. We address these limitations with PPM-Decay, a new variant of PPM that introduces a customizable memory decay kernel. In three studies—one with artificially generated sequences, one with chord sequences from Western music, and one with new behavioral data from an auditory pattern detection experiment—we show how this decay kernel improves the model’s predictive performance for sequences whose underlying statistics change over time, and enables the model to capture effects of memory constraints on auditory pattern detection. The resulting model is available in our new open-source R package, ppm (https://github.com/pmcharrison/ppm)
Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome in a very low birth weight preterm infant
Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) is an exfoliative dermatitis produced by the toxins of some strains of staphylococci, predominantly phage Group 2, strains 71 and 55. It has been reported mostly in children under 5 years of age with few cases only reported in very preterm infants. The disease can be life threatening in very low birth weight preterm babies. We are reporting one such case to emphasize the importance for clinicians to not only recognize the clinical manifestations of SSSS but also the need to closely monitor infants, especially VLBW infants with SSSS for bacterial sepsis and other complications
Simultaneous Consonance in Music Perception and Composition
Simultaneous consonance is a salient perceptual phenomenon corresponding to the perceived pleasantness of simultaneously sounding musical tones. Various competing theories of consonance have been proposed over the centuries, but recently a consensus has developed that simultaneous consonance is primarily driven by harmonicity perception. Here we question this view, substantiating our argument by critically reviewing historic consonance research from a broad variety of disciplines, reanalyzing consonance perception data from 4 previous behavioral studies representing more than 500 participants, and modeling three Western musical corpora representing more than 100,000 compositions. We conclude that simultaneous consonance is a composite phenomenon that derives in large part from three phenomena: interference, periodicity/harmonicity, and cultural familiarity. We formalize this conclusion with a computational model that predicts a musical chord’s simultaneous consonance from these three features, and release this model in an open-source R package, incon, alongside 15 other computational models also evaluated in this paper. We hope that this package will facilitate further psychological and musicological research into simultaneous consonance
Neonatal seizures: our experience of incidence, etiology and outcome in a tertiary care centre
Context: Neonatal seizures often evoke a sense of urgency among physician in charge of newborn as they oftenindicate a CNS dysfunction. Incidence of neonatal seizures remains high in our community even in this era ofadvanced perinatal care. Early detection of seizure and its etiology help us to provide specific therapy.Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence, etiology and outcome of neonatalseizures. Settings and design: Prospective hospital based descriptive study conducted in the neonatal unit oftertiary care hospital. Material and methods: Consecutive newborns admitted with seizures were included inthis study. Data were collected regarding relevant history and examination, thoroughly evaluated for etiologyand outcome was documented. Analysed by descriptive statistics and conclusions were drawn. Results: Onehundred and eight newborns with seizures were included during study period and incidence of neonatal seizurewas 5.5%. Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and sepsis constituted the most common etiologies. HIEwas the most common etiology associated with mortality. Abnormal EEG with supressed background activitywas present in majority of mortality cases. Conclusion: Most of the cases had multifactorial etiology. Measuresfor prevention, prompt recognition and specific management of neonatal seizure help to reduce the burden ofneonatal morbidity in the community
Lease Accounting Disclosure Practice of Non Bank Financial Institutions (NBFIs) in Sri Lanka: A Lessor’s Perspective
Non Bank Financial Institutions (NBFIs) have become prominent alongside with banking and finance sector. The major business of most NBFIs in Sri Lanka is leasing. Lease accounting is a form-driven standard. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (ICASL) introduced the revised accounting standard LKAS 17: Leases with effective from January 1, 2012. This research investigated the present state of accounting for lease in Sri Lanka as per the revised standard. An analytical review was done as per the standard and compliance with the stipulated disclosure requirements. All the Non Banking Financial Institutions which engage in leasing business and listed in the Colombo Stock Exchange were considered in this research. The methodology follows the content analysis which is consistent with Nasreen & Jahan (2007). The findings of this research indicate that the degree of correspondence between the standard as per LKAS: 17 and actual reporting by the leasing companies in Sri Lanka is considerably at a satisfactory level.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4038/kjm.v2i1.6544 Kelaniya Journal of Management Vol.2(1) 2013:58-91</p
