    Photoassociative ionization of Na inside a storage ring

    Motivated by recent interest in low dimensional arrays of atoms, we experimentally investigated the way cold collisional processes are affected by the geometry of the considered atomic sample. More specifically, we studied the case of photoassociative ionization (PAI) both in a storage ring where collision is more unidirectional in character and in a trap with clear undefinition of collision axis. First, creating a ring shaped trap (atomotron) we investigated two-color PAI dependence with intensity and polarization of a probing laser. The intensity dependence of the PAI rate was also measured in a magneto-optical trap presenting equivalent temperature and density conditions. Indeed, the results show that in the ring trap, the value of the PAI rate constant is much lower and does not show evidences of saturation, unlike in the case of the 3D-MOT.     Nesse trabalho foi coletado e analisado um solo cascalhento sob campo cerrado de Sete Lagoas - MG, visando obter subsídios para sua classificação e seu manejo. O solo foi analisado pelos métodos de rotina para fertilidade, química e física. Os resultados indicam que o solo é dominado pelas frações grosseiras, que perfazem mais de 80% da massa dos horizontes. O solo também apresenta acidez trocável elevada e baixos teores de nutrientes, exceto no horizonte superficial. Os testes de infiltração indicam condutividade hidráulica alta. O solo apresenta relativa resistência à erosão, mas de difícil manejo em caso de intervenção. Palavras-chave: granulornetria, fração grosseira, infiltração não saturad

    Growth conditions, structure, and superconductivity of pure and metal-doped FeTe1-xSex single crystals

    Superconducting single crystals of pure FeTe1 xSex and FeTe0.65Se0.35 doped with Co, Ni, Cu, Mn, Zn, Mo, Cd, In, Pb, Hg, V, Ga, Mg, Al, Ti, Cr, Sr or Nd into Fe ions site have been grown applying Bridgman's method. It has been found that the sharpness of transition to the superconducting state in FeTe1 xSex is evidently inversely correlated with crystallographic quality of the crystals. Among all of the studied dopants only Co, Ni and Cu substitute Fe ions in FeTe0.65Se0.35 crystals. The remaining examined ions do not incorporate into the crystal structure. Nevertheless, they form inclusions together with selenium, tellurium and/or iron, what changes the chemical composition of host matrix and therefore influences Tc value. Small disorder introduced into magnetic sublattice, by partial replacement of Fe ions by slight amount of nonmagnetic ions of Cu (~ 1.5 at%) or by magnetic ions of Ni (~ 2 at%) and Co (~5 at%) with spin value different than that of Fe ion, completely suppresses superconductivity in FeTe1 xSex system. This indicates that even if superconductivity is observed in the system containing magnetic ions it can not survive when the disorder in magnetic ions sublattice is introduced, most likely because of magnetic scattering of Cooper pairs.Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, 3 table

    Recent advances in goat artificial insemination in Brazil.

    Abstract: This review reports the advances of goat Artificial Insemination (AI) in Brazil in the last two decades. These advances were based primarily on the study and knowledge of the reproductive events of goats subjected to different methods of control of the estrous cycle and ovulation. These approaches are mainly related to the development and precise characterization of protocols of estrus induction and synchronization in goats during either the natural breeding or nonbreeding season. In parallel, the Embrapa Technique of cervical AI through cervical immobilization in goats was developed. In association, the studies characterized the cervical mucus and the ideal moment for AI execution with different types of semen. Prototypes and an AI kit were developed and tested at both laboratory and field conditions in the national dairy goat breeding program - CapraGene®. Factors affecting the pregnancy rate after AI were identified and classified. Studies based on transrectal ultrasonography have revealed the prevalence of reproductive disorders characterizing the major problems associated with subfertility or infertility in the goat. All these studies allowed to consolidate one of the most productive and applied collections of AI knowledge in goats of the last 20 years in Brazil. [Recentes avanços da inseminação artificial de caprinos no Brasil]. Resumo: Esta revisão reporta os recentes avanços da Inseminação Artificial em caprinos (IA) no Brasil nas últimas duas décadas. Estes avanços foram pautados primariamente no estudo e conhecimento dos eventos reprodutivos de cabras submetidas a diferentes formas de controle do ciclo estral e ovulação. Estas abordam principalmente o desenvolvimento e caracterização precisa de protocolos de indução e sincronização de estro em cabras durante a estação de anestro fisiológico e de acasalamento natural. Paralelamente, foi desenvolvida a Técnica Embrapa de IA cervical em caprinos por meio da imobilização cervical. Associadamente, os estudos caracterizaram a relação do muco cervical e o momento ideal para execução da IA com diferentes tipos de sêmen. Protótipos e um Kit de IA foram desenvolvidos e testados em condições de laboratório e de campo no âmbito do programa nacional de melhoramento genético de caprinos leiteiros ? CapraGene®. Fatores que interferem na taxa de gestação após a IA foram identificados e classificados. Estudos com base em ultrassonografia transretal revelaram a prevalência de desordens reprodutivas caracterizando os principais problemas associados à subfertilidade ou infertilidade na cabra.     Effectiveness of Chitosan Films Impregnated With Ciprofloxacin for the Prophylaxis of Osteomyelitis in Open Fractures: An Experimental Study in Rats

    Background: The systemic antimicrobial prophylaxis is the standard treatment in the prevention of osteomyelitis after open fractures, with topical application of antimicrobials as an alternative due to their high concentrations at the site of the fracture, low systemic concentrations and fewer side effects. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of prophylaxis of osteomyelitis through experimental model of open fractures with the use of chitosan films, whether or not impregnated with ciprofloxacin. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 24 Holtzman rats were distributed into 4 groups of 6 rats each. The CT (control of treatment) group: an open fracture model treated with systemic antimicrobial; the IC (infection control) group: an open fracture untreated model; the C (chitosan) group: an open fracture model treated using a chitosan film; and the CA (chitosan with antimicrobial) group: an open fracture model treated using a chitosan film impregnated with antimicrobial. After 3 weeks the animals were killed by an overdose of anesthetic, and a fragment osseous was removed for histological and microbiological analysis. The comparisons between the groups considered significant values of P ≤ 0.05. Results: In cultures of the CT group, there was less bacterial growth compared to the results of the cultures of the IC (P = 0.005), C (P = 0.005) and CA (P = 0.009) groups. The inflammation was lower in the CT group compared to the IC (P = 0.014), C (P = 0.001) and CA (P = 0.007) groups. Conclusions: In this experimental model of open fracture, the chitosan film pure or impregnated with ciprofloxacin was not effective in the prophylaxis of osteomyelitis
