    Eruptive history of the Late Quaternary Ciomadul (Csomád) volcano, East Carpathians, part II: magma output rates

    This study, which builds on high-precision unspiked Cassignol-Gillot K-Ar age determinations, presents an advanced DEMbased volumetrical analysis to infer long-term magma output rates for the Late Quaternary Ciomadul (Csomád) dacitic lava dome complex (East Carpathians, Romania). The volcanic field of Ciomadul developed on the erosional surface of Lower Cretaceous flysch and ~ 2 Ma old andesites and experienced an extended eruptive history from ~ 850 to < 30 ka. Predominantly effusive activity took place during the first stage (~ 850 to ~ 440 ka), producing volumetrically minor, isolated, peripheral domes. Subsequently, after a ~ 250 ky repose interval, a voluminous central dome cluster developed in the second stage (~ 200 to < 30 ka). During the youngest phase of evolution (~ 60 to < 30 ka), highly explosive eruptions also occurred, resulting in the formation of two craters (Mohos and St. Ana). The calculated ~ 8.00 ± 0.55 km3 total volume of the lava domes, which includes the related volcaniclastic (1.57 km3 ) as well as erosionally removed (0.18 km3 ) material, is in line with dimensions of other medium-sized dacitic lava domes worldwide. This volume was extruded at an average long-term magma output rate of 9.76 km3 / My (0.0098 km3 /ky). However, most of the domes (7.53 ± 0.51 km3 ) were formed in the 200 to < 30 ka period, implying a significantly increased magma output rate of 37.40 km3 /My (0.0374 km3 /ky), more than 30 times higher than in the first stage. Within these long-term trends, individual lava domes of Ciomadul (e.g. those with volumes between 0.02 and 0.40 km3 ) would have been emplaced at much higher rates over a period of years to tens of years. The active periods, lasting up to hundreds of years, would have been followed by repose periods ~ 30 times longer. The most recent eruption of Ciomadul has been dated here at 27.7 ± 1.4 ka. This age, which is in agreement with radiocarbon dates for the onset of lake sediment accumulation in St. Ana crater, dates fragmented lava blocks which are possibly related to a disrupted dome. This suggests that during the last, typically explosive, phase of Ciomadul, lava dome extrusion was still ongoing. In a global context, the analysis of the volumetric dynamism of Ciomadul’s activity gives insights into the temporal variations in magma output; at lava domes, short-term (dayor week-scale) eruption rates smooth out in long-term (millenia-scale) output rates which are tens of times lower

    Recarga artificial en Bajos Submeridionales

    Se presenta la experiencia en desarrollo en un sector de Bajos Submeridionales próximo a Tostado, para monitorear los efectos de la recarga artificial de acuíferos. El objetivo del estudio es mejorar la disponibilidad de agua en calidad y cantidad para uso ganadero y evaluar una obra de recarga a partir de un pozo doble propósito recarga – bombeo para mejorar su eficiencia, y difundir estas prácticas.El área piloto se ubica en un paleocauce arenoso del río Salado. En el mismo se han realizado numerosos estudios geoeléctricos, de infiltración, sedimentológicos, químicos recuperación de niveles, de suelos y de recarga. Además se dispone de una estación meteorológica automática, caudalímetro y freatímetros. Se realizó un análisis de eventos de recarga y su efecto sobre el sistema natural y en la obra. Se concluye que ha resultado exitosa y puede ser transferida a otros ambientes de paleocauces del chaco-santafesino.This work describes an artificial recharge experience of groundwater as source for animal beverage, de veloped on a livestock demonstrative unit, placed in Bajos Submeridionales, Santa Fe province, Argentina. The aim of this study is to improve quality and quantity of water for livestock use, analyze a recharge-pumping well efficiency, and finally to spread this practice in the region. The study area is located in a antique sandy channel of the Salado river, where have been conducted geoelectric studies, sedimentologic, soil and water analysis, pumping and recharge, and infiltration tests. Additionally, it counts with metheorological on-line data from an automatic station, flowmeter, and water-level measurements from digital and analogical devises. An analysis of a recharge event has been conducted in order to assess environmental changes and response of facilities. This successful experience suggests that these kinds of facilities could be applied in similar environments of chaco-santafesino region.Universidad Nacional de La Plat

    Construction and destruction of Mont Pelee volcano: Volumes and rates constrained from a geomorphological model of evolution

    International audienceThis study presents long-term volumes and construction rates for the Mont Conil-Mont Pelée volcano and rate estimates at which volcanic activity creates relief. An algorithm, ShapeVolc, is used to numerically model topographic surfaces. Volcano morphology is analyzed using current digital elevation model in combination with mapped geology to produce 10 paleotopographies at the end of four constructional stages and three destructional events. Volumes of each constructional stage were estimated at about 35.2 km3, 26.2 km3, 8.3 km3, and 2.5 km3 for a total cumulative erupted volume of 72.2 km3. We estimate that Mont Pelée accounted for about 10% of the Lesser Antilles arc production in the last 100 kyr. The volcano has been built at an average rate of 0.13 km3/kyr during the last 550 kyr. During that time, construction rates varied by a factor of 15, from 0.04 km3/kyr in early stages up to 0.52 km3/kyr after the second flank collapse. Volumes displaced by each flank collapse were estimated at 14.7 km3, 8.8 km3, and 3.5 km3, thus about 37% of the total constructed volume. Integrated over the volcano's lifetime, the rate at which flank collapses removed material off the island is 0.15 km3/kyr. In contrast, long-term erosion rates outside collapsed areas are estimated at about 0.05 ± 0.7 km3/kyr, or ~11 km3 of material removed. This latter rate is not negligible, which strengthens the importance of taking into account recurrent small erosional events on the geomorphological evolution of a volcanic island in a tropical context
