    Visual Feedback and Second Language Segmental Production: the Generalizability of Pronunciation Gains

    While a number of researchers have noted the lack of research on pronunciation instruction, relative to other aspects of language (i.e. syntax), pronunciation has been shown to be crucial for facilitating intelligible and comprehensible second language (L2) productions. Addressing the need for empirically tested pedagogical methods, the current study considers the use of a classroom-based visual feedback paradigm for the instruction of a segmental feature, namely voice onset time, which has been shown to be a distinctive marker of accent for English-dominant L2 learners of Spanish. In addition, this study examines the potential generalizability of gains made through the visual feedback paradigm, assessing whether gains made in controlled reading tasks (i.e. carrier sentences) will extend to more continuous and spontaneous speech. The results demonstrate significant improvements in voice onset time produced by participants following the visual feedback paradigm, relative to a control group. Furthermore, while the visual feedback training was limited to short, controlled utterances (i.e. carrier sentences), benefits were observed for more continuous and spontaneous speech

    Maximizing the effect of visual feedback for pronunciation instruction: A comparative analysis of three approaches

    Visual feedback, in which learners visually analyze acoustic speech characteristics, has been shown to significantly improve pronunciation, but extant research has varied widely with respect to the target feature, length of the intervention, and type of intervention. This study presents a comparative analysis of three methods of visual feedback for L2 segmental pronunciation instruction. These methods, all focused on training voice onset time for English-speaking learners of Spanish, differed in duration of instruction (i.e., short and long) and the nature of each intervention (i.e., phonemes presented simultaneously or sequentially). Results show that while all forms of visual feedback significantly improve L2 Spanish pronunciation, evidenced by a reduction in voice onset time, the greatest improvement was found following both longer treatments and a sequential approach. Theoretical and pedagogical implications are discussed

    When opportunities backfire:Alternatives reduce perseverance and success in task completion

    We consider an agent who needs to finish one task under a time constraint. Would she benefit from having several alternatives of which she only needs to complete one, or is it better not to have options? We conjecture that agents will be worse off when having several options. In our experiment, the control group receives a single task to work on, while the treated group has two optional tasks to choose from. We find that having two alternatives negatively affects performance. Even when the additional task is substantially easier than the original one, having more options does not help. We discuss potential mechanisms and present evidence showing that many managers do not anticipate the negative effects.</p

    Ethical Free Riding: When Honest People Find Dishonest Partners

    Corruption is often the product of coordinated rule violations. Here, we investigated how such corrupt collaboration emerges and spreads when people can choose their partners versus when they cannot. Participants were assigned a partner and could increase their payoff by coordinated lying. After several interactions, they were either free to choose whether to stay with or switch their partner or forced to stay with or switch their partner. Results reveal that both dishonest and honest people exploit the freedom to choose a partner. Dishonest people seek a partner who will also lie—a “partner in crime.” Honest people, by contrast, engage in ethical free riding: They refrain from lying but also from leaving dishonest partners, taking advantage of their partners’ lies. We conclude that to curb collaborative corruption, relying on people’s honesty is insufficient. Encouraging honest individuals not to engage in ethical free riding is essential.Social decision makin

    The impact of relative position and returns on sacrifice and reciprocity: an experimental study using individual decisions

    We present a comprehensive experimental design that makes it possible to characterize other-regarding preferences and their relationship to the decision maker’s relative position. Participants are faced with a large number of decisions involving variations in the trade-offs between own and other’s payoffs, as well as in other potentially important factors like the decision maker’s relative position. We find that: (1) choices are responsive to the cost of helping and hurting others; (2) The weight a decision maker places on others’ monetary payoffs depends on whether the decision maker is in an advantageous or disadvantageous relative position; and (3) We find no evidence of reciprocity of the type linked to menu-dependence. The results of a mixture-model estimation show considerable heterogeneity in subjects’ motivations and confirm the absence of reciprocal motives. Pure selfish behavior is the most frequently observed behavior. Among the subjects exhibiting social preferences, social-welfare maximization is the most frequent, followed by inequality-aversion and by competitiveness

    Goal processes &amp; self-efficacy related to psychological distress in head &amp; neck cancer patients and their partners

    Purpose and objective of the research: In this cross-sectional study we used a self-regulation perspective to better understand the experience of psychological distress in head & neck (H&N) cancer patients and their partners. We examined which goals they valued and the extent to which patients and partners experience goal disturbance. Furthermore, associations were explored between goal disturbance, goal reengagement, (goal)self-efficacy, and psychological distress. Methods and sample: H&N cancer patients and their partners, recruited from the Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam (N = 40), were interviewed and completed questionnaires, assessing the above aspects of the self-regulation theory. Key results: H&N cancer patients and their partners experienced goal disturbance from the disease. Such disturbances were in patients significantly related to more psychological distress. Higher levels of goal re-engagement were related to less psychological distress, again only significantly in patients. More self-efficacy was significantly associated with less psychological distress in both patients and partners. Conclusions: Self-regulation abilities as goal re-engagement and self-efficacy may be screened and used as target in future psychological interventions, given their potential to decrease perceived psychological distress. In view of elevated levels of goal disturbances in partners, psychological support for caring relatives in such interventions is recommended. (c) 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd

    Martensitic transformation of individual grains in low-alloyed TRIP steels

    We have performed in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments on low-alloyed multiphase TRIP steels during cooling, to monitor the martensitic transformation of individual austenite grains within the bulk material. Direct experimental evidence is presented that the stability of the austenite grains is controlled not only by the local carbon level but also by the grain size. This new quantitative information on the martensitic transformation in complex microstructures is of great importance for the design of martensite-based metallic materials.</p
