    The morphology and optical properties of the surface of Mercury resemble those of the Moon in remarkable detail, recording a very similar sequence of events; chemical and mineralogical similarity of the outer layers is implied. Mercury is probably a differentiated planet with an iron-rich core. Differentiation is inferred to have occurred very early. No evidence of atmospheric modification of any landform is found. Large-scale scarps and ridges unlike lunar or Martian features may reflect a unique period of planetary compression near the end of heavy bombardment, perhaps related to contraction of the core

    From Retinal Waves to Activity-Dependent Retinogeniculate Map Development

    A neural model is described of how spontaneous retinal waves are formed in infant mammals, and how these waves organize activity-dependent development of a topographic map in the lateral geniculate nucleus, with connections from each eye segregated into separate anatomical layers. The model simulates the spontaneous behavior of starburst amacrine cells and retinal ganglion cells during the production of retinal waves during the first few weeks of mammalian postnatal development. It proposes how excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms within individual cells, such as Ca2+-activated K+ channels, and cAMP currents and signaling cascades, can modulate the spatiotemporal dynamics of waves, notably by controlling the after-hyperpolarization currents of starburst amacrine cells. Given the critical role of the geniculate map in the development of visual cortex, these results provide a foundation for analyzing the temporal dynamics whereby the visual cortex itself develops

    Hippocampal overexpression of NOS1AP promotes endophenotypes related to mental disorders

    BACKGROUND\nMETHODS\nFINDINGS\nINTERPRETATION\nFUNDING\nNitric oxide synthase 1 adaptor protein (NOS1AP; previously named CAPON) is linked to the glutamatergic postsynaptic density through interaction with neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS). NOS1AP and its interaction with nNOS have been associated with several mental disorders. Despite the high levels of NOS1AP expression in the hippocampus and the relevance of this brain region in glutamatergic signalling as well as mental disorders, a potential role of hippocampal NOS1AP in the pathophysiology of these disorders has not been investigated yet.\nTo uncover the function of NOS1AP in hippocampus, we made use of recombinant adeno-associated viruses to overexpress murine full-length NOS1AP or the NOS1AP carboxyterminus in the hippocampus of mice. We investigated these mice for changes in gene expression, neuronal morphology, and relevant behavioural phenotypes.\nWe found that hippocampal overexpression of NOS1AP markedly increased the interaction of nNOS with PSD-95, reduced dendritic spine density, and changed dendritic spine morphology at CA1 synapses. At the behavioural level, we observed an impairment in social memory and decreased spatial working memory capacity.\nOur data provide a mechanistic explanation for a highly selective and specific contribution of hippocampal NOS1AP and its interaction with the glutamatergic postsynaptic density to cross-disorder pathophysiology.     Avian paramyxovirus type 1 infection in houbara bustards (Chlamydotis undulata macqueenii): Clinical and pathologic findings

    Clinical and pathologic findings of avian paramyxovirus type 1 (PMV-1) in 19 houbara bustards (Chlamydotis undulata macqueenii) imported from Pakistan into the United Arab Emirates and one captive-bred bird are reported. Clinical signs included circling, walking backward, ataxia, opisthotonos, torticollis, recumbency, head tilt, head shaking, head tremor, tucking of head under keel, nasal discharge, conjunctivitis, and diarrhea. The length of time imported birds exhibited clinical signs varied from 4 days to 18 mo after importation. Hemagglutinating antibodies against PMV-1 were detected in the sera of all 17 birds from which blood samples were collected, and PMV-1 was isolated from pooled brain, spleen, and lung tissues from two birds with acute clinical signs. There were no distinctive gross lesions at necropsy, and histologic findings were consistent with but not pathognomonic for PMV-1. All houbara bustards managed in a captive breeding and restoration program established by the National Avian Research Center have been vaccinated against PMV-1 since October 1992, and no case of PMV-1 has been reported in this collection since that time

    ACME COLLABORATION.Author Institution: Harvard University; Yale University; Harvard University; Yale University; Harvard UniversitySome polar diatomic molecules have large effective internal electric fields (Eeff∼1011 V/cm\mathcal{E}_{eff}\sim10^{11}\, V/cm) that can be used to make measurements of the electron's electric dipole moment (eEDM) with unprecedented sensitivity. By performing precision spectroscopy on the metastable H3Δ1H ^{3}\Delta_{1} state of ThO in a cryogenic buffer gas beam, we have demonstrated a statistical sensitivity to the eEDM of \delta d_{e}\approx1\times10^{-28}\, e\cdot cm/\sqrt{T/\mbox{days}}, which is competitive with the current experimental limit, \left|d_{e}\right|<1.05\times10^{-27}e\cdot cm. The existence of a non-zero eEDM on this level would be evidence for the existence of interactions that violate parity and time-reversal symmetries that are not included in the Standard Model. Many extensions to the Standard Model (in particular supersymmetric theories) predict the eEDM to be very close to the current experimental limit.
