An Adverse Outcome Pathway for Potential Space Radiation Induced Neurological Diseases

    Get PDF
Astronauts have begun to spend increasingly longer periods in space, putting themselves in foreign environments in order to explore the unknown. Space radiation is one of the largest health risks faced by astronauts on their missions. The space radiation environment has the ability to cause high levels of irreversible damage. Multiple sources of charged particle radiation exist in the space environment that may increase risk of carcinogenesis, degeneration of bodily tissue (e.g. gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, or pulmonary), acute radiation syndromes, and acute and late central nervous system (CNS) disorders. In order to help inform an understanding of the risk of degenerative CNS disease due to radiation exposure, an initial step is presented here to develop an adverse outcome pathway from radiation exposure focused on Alzheimers disease

Aligning University of Arkansas Curriculum with Employee Expectations regarding Analytics Graduates

    Get PDF
Institutions around the world need talented data analysts that can handle the influx of data being produced. This is driving an even higher need for well-prepared students that can bring value to the company immediately out of undergraduate or graduate programs. Because of this, what they are being taught needs to align directly with skills and knowledge that are required to be effective within organizations from the jump. This paper considers the alignment of higher education curriculum with employee expectations regarding analytics graduates. This research paper is designed to determine whether programs, such as the Walton College of Business, need to review and align their curriculum with employee expectations regarding analytics graduates. After interviewing six different companies with various analytics needs, it was revealed that programs could make changes in order to better prepare students for success in analytics fields. It was determined that programs should focus on technical abilities such as data management and provide more hands-on experience with real world data to develop students project management skills. Additionally, it was revealed that programs should also focus on giving students a base knowledge of programming as well as develop certain vocational skills such as intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and attention to detail

Long-term Effects of Alternative Residue Management Practices on Near-surface Soil Properties and Soybean Production in a Wheat-soybean, Double-crop System in Eastern Arkansas

Adoption of management practices that maintain or increase soil organic matter (SOM), which contains 58% carbon (C) on average, may help to mitigate climate change by sequestering atmospheric C. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to determine the long-term trends in SOM, soil C and nitrogen (N), bulk density, various soil chemical properties (i.e., pH, electrical conductivity [EC], and Mehlich-3-extractable nutrients) in the top 10 cm, and soybean yield as affected by residue burning (burning and non-burning), tillage (conventional and no-tillage), irrigation (irrigated and non-irrigated), and N-fertilization/residue level (high and low) in a wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)-soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], double-crop system in eastern Arkansas. The secondary objective was to determine the relationship between soil water potential (-MPa) and soil water content (g g-1) in the top 7.5 cm as affected by residue treatments. The field site has been consistently managed for 13 years at the University of Arkansas Lon Mann Cotton Research Station near Marianna, Arkansas on a Calloway silt loam (fine silty, mixed, active, thermic Glossaquic Fraglossudalf). Averaged across all other factors, SOM did not differ over time (P \u3e 0.05) under irrigation, while SOM content increased over time (P \u3c 0.05) until approximately nine years after initial conversion when SOM decreased thereafter under dryland production. Results indicated that irrigation management caused many of the largest differences in near-surface soil property trends over time, namely SOM and C, compared to the other field treatments. The relationship between the natural logarithm of soil water potential and the gravimetric soil water content was only affected (P \u3c 0.05) by the N-fertilization/residue level treatment. Averaged across tillage, burning, and irrigation, soil water contents under high residue treatment exceeded those water contents under low residue treatment at the same water potential. The increased soil water retention under high residue treatment may be related to increased biomass inputs, SOM accumulation, and soil aggregation at the \u3c 2mm level compared with low residue treatment. Understanding the long-term effects of growing-season weather patterns as well as irrigation, burning, tillage, and fertilization management on near-surface soil properties is critical to developing sustainable agricultural practices in the mid-South

Microgravity research in plant biological systems: Realizing the potential of molecular biology

    Get PDF
The sole all-pervasive feature of the environment that has helped shape, through evolution, all life on Earth is gravity. The near weightlessness of the Space Station Freedom space environment allows gravitational effects to be essentially uncoupled, thus providing an unprecedented opportunity to manipulate, systematically dissect, study, and exploit the role of gravity in the growth and development of all life forms. New and exciting opportunities are now available to utilize molecular biological and biochemical approaches to study the effects of microgravity on living organisms. By careful experimentation, we can determine how gravity perception occurs, how the resulting signals are produced and transduced, and how or if tissue-specific differences in gene expression occur. Microgravity research can provide unique new approaches to further our basic understanding of development and metabolic processes of cells and organisms, and to further the application of this new knowledge for the betterment of humankind

Flow along the continental slope off Washington, Autumn 1971

Observations of the hydrographic regime across the continental shelf and offshore to depths exceeding 2000 rn were made in Autumn 1971 to investigate the possible extension of the California Undercurrent off the coast of Washington. Closely spaced stations, positioned by depth, were made to the bottom on each crossing of the continental slope. Geostrophic calculations relative to 1000 m and extending up the slope to shallower depths indicated a broad band of northward flow above the continental slope...

Clickable surfaces for the selective recognition of oligosaccharides

    Get PDF
With the emergent role of protein glycosylation as a potential biomarker of disease, new technologies are required to selectively recognise unique glycan structures symptomatically expressed in disease states. Currently, glycan recognition is achieved through methods lacking high affinity and selectivity or through complex analytical methods and are poorly suited to clinical laboratories. In this thesis we propose an alternative glycan sensing strategy based on molecular self-assembly and imprinting of glycan ligands with phenyl boronic acid (PBA), imbuing selective oligosaccharide recognition to a surface. This strategy employs extensive use of the copper catalysed click reaction providing a simple highly biocompatible and adaptable self-assembled monolayer intended to form a foundation for future modifications. The synthesis and characterisation of various SAM monomers has been described here alongside azide functionalised-PBA CuAAC ligands and PBA terminated SAM monomers. SAMs formed with these were characterised for surface organisation and the CuAAC reaction yield established thus confirming reaction utility in functionalisation of alkyne terminated SAMs. Saccharide binding of PBA functional SAMs was then examined accounting for surface organisation between SAM monomer designs. Having determined a suitable SAM for functionalisation, we then produced a novel oligosaccharide-PBA imprinted surface demonstrating high selectivity between structurally different oligosaccharides

Computation of Cosmic Ray Ionization and Dose at Mars: a Comparison of HZETRN and Planetocosmics for Proton and Alpha Particles

    Get PDF
The ability to evaluate the cosmic ray environment at Mars is of interest for future manned exploration. To support exploration, tools must be developed to accurately access the radiation environment in both free space and on planetary surfaces. The primary tool NASA uses to quantify radiation exposure behind shielding materials is the space radiation transport code, HZETRN. In order to build confidence in HZETRN, code benchmarking against Monte Carlo radiation transport codes is often used. This work compares the dose calculations at Mars by HZETRN and the Geant4 application Planetocosmics. The dose at ground and the energy deposited in the atmosphere by galactic cosmic ray protons and alpha particles has been calculated for the Curiosity landing conditions. In addition, this work has considered Solar Energetic Particle events, allowing for the comparison of varying input radiation environments. The results for protons and alpha particles show very good agreement between HZETRN and Planetocosmics
