Chasing the second gamma-ray bright isolated neutron star: 3EG J1835+5918/RX J1836.2+5925
The EGRET telescope aboard NASAs Compton GRO has repeatedly detected 3EG
J1835+5918, a bright and steady source of high-energy gamma-ray emission with
no identification suggested until recently. The long absence of any likely
counterpart for a bright gamma-ray source located 25 degrees off the Galactic
plane initiated several attempts of deep observations at other wavelengths. We
report on counterparts in X-rays on a basis of a 60 ksec ROSAT HRI image. In
order to conclude on the plausibility of the X-ray counterparts, we reanalyzed
data from EGRET at energies above 100 MeV and above 1 GeV, including data up to
CGRO observation cycle 7. The gamma-ray source location represents the latest
and probably the final positional assessment based on EGRET data. The X-ray
counterparts were studied during follow-up optical identification campaigns,
leaving only one object to be likely associated with the gamma-ray source 3EG
J1835+5918. This object, RX J1836.2+5925, has the characteristics of an
isolated neutron star and possibly of a radio-quiet pulsar.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. To appear in the Proceedings of the 270.

Are Q-stars a serious threat for stellar-mass black hole candidates?
We examine the status of the threat posed to stellar-mass black hole
candidates by the possible existence of Q-stars (compact objects with an exotic
equation of state which might have masses well above the normally-accepted
maximum for standard neutron stars). We point out that Q-stars could be
extremely compact (with radii less than 1.5 times the corresponding
Schwarzschild radius) making it quite difficult to determine observationally
that a given object is a black hole rather than a Q-star, unless there is
direct evidence for the absence of a solid surface. On the other hand, in order
for a Q-star to have a mass as high as that inferred for the widely-favoured
black hole candidate V404 Cygni, it would be necessary for the Q-matter
equation of state to apply already at densities an order of magnitude below
that of nuclear matter and this might well be considered implausible on
physical grounds. We also describe how rotation affects the situation and
discuss the prospects for determining observationally that black hole

ACTIVATION OF GABAA RECEPTORS AND INHIBITION OF NEUROSTEROID SYNTHESIS HAVE SEPARABLE ESTROUS-DEPENDENT EFFECTS ON BINGE DRINKING IN FEMALE MICE
poster abstractAlcohol concentrations relevant to the beginning stages of binge intoxica-tion may selectively activate GABAA receptor subtypes expressing δ-subunit proteins (δ-GABAAR). Indeed, administration of agonists that interact with these δ-GABAAR prior to alcohol access, can abolish binge drinking behavior (Melon and Boehm, 2011). Unfortunately, our ability to manipulate binge drinking in females is dependent upon estrous phase. The present experi-ments were designed to clarify the estrous-dependent effects of activation of δ-GABAAR on binge drinking. Specifically, we were interested in demonstrat-ing whether females display more persistent binge drinking as a function of cycle-dependent changes in the synthesis of endogenous neurosteroids that modulate δ-GABAAR. Using the Drinking-in-the-Dark binge-drinking model, regularly cycling female mice were given 2 hours of daily access to alcohol (20%v/v). Vaginal cytology was assessed after each drinking session to track estrous status. In experiment 1, animals were administered gaboxadol (an agonist with high affinity for δ-GABAAR) prior to their 8th day of access. In experiment 2, these methods were repeated, but mice received vehicle or finasteride (a neurosteroid synthesis inhibitor) 22hr prior to their 8th day of access. Results from experiment 1 demonstrated that diestrus females were insensitive to the significant gaboxadol-induced decrease in binge drinking observed for proestrus, estrus and metestrus females. In experiment 2, ve-hicle and finasteride treated diestrus females exhibited gaboxadol-induced reduction of their binge drinking. Surprisingly, finasteride pretreatment sig-nificantly reduced binge drinking for estrus females. These studies suggest that ovarian-linked changes to extrasynaptic GABAA R and to neurosteroid activity may be important factors in the binge consumption of alcohol for females. Future studies will further explore the role that acute stress during diestrus may play in inhibiting the effects of δ-GABAA R activation on binge drinking
Social networks and labour productivity in Europe: An empirical investigation
This paper uses firm-level data recorded in the AMADEUS database to
investigate the distribution of labour productivity in different European
countries. We find that the upper tail of the empirical productivity
distributions follows a decaying power-law, whose exponent is obtained
by a semi-parametric estimation technique recently developed by Clementi et al.
(2006). The emergence of "fat tails" in productivity distribution has already
been detected in Di Matteo et al. (2005) and explained by means of a model of
social network. Here we show that this model is tested on a broader sample of
countries having different patterns of social network structure. These
different social attitudes, measured using a social capital indicator, reflect
in the power-law exponent estimates, verifying in this way the existence of

On the time dependent Schwarzschild - de Sitter spacetime
An imperfect cosmic fluid with energy flux is analyzed. Even though its
energy density is positive, the pressure due to the fact
that the metric is asymptotically de Sitter. The kinematical quantities for a
nongeodesic congruence are computed. The scalar expansion is time independent
but divergent at the singularity . Far from the central mass and
for a cosmic time , the heat flux does not depend on

On class visualisation for high dimensional data: Exploring scientific datasets
Parametric Embedding (PE) has recently been proposed as a general-purpose
algorithm for class visualisation. It takes class posteriors produced by a
mixture-based clustering algorithm and projects them in 2D for visualisation.
However, although this fully modularised combination of objectives (clustering
and projection) is attractive for its conceptual simplicity, in the case of
high dimensional data, we show that a more optimal combination of these
objectives can be achieved by integrating them both into a consistent
probabilistic model. In this way, the projection step will fulfil a role of
regularisation, guarding against the curse of dimensionality. As a result, the
tradeoff between clustering and visualisation turns out to enhance the
predictive abilities of the overall model. We present results on both synthetic
data and two real-world high-dimensional data sets: observed spectra of

Revisiting OSIRIS-REx Touch-And-Go (TAG) Performance Given the Realities of Asteroid Bennu
The Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and SecurityRegolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) mission is a NASA New Frontiers mission that launched in 2016 and rendezvoused with the near-Earth asteroid (101955) Bennu in late 2018. Upon arrival, the surface of Bennu was found to be much rockier than expected. The original Touch-and-Go (TAG) requirement for sample collection was to deliver the spacecraft to a site with a 25-meter radius; however, the largest hazard-free sites are no larger than 8 meters in radius. To accommodate the dearth of safe sample collection sites, the project reevaluated all aspects of flight system performance pertaining to TAG in order to account for the demonstrated performance of the spacecraft and navigation prediction accuracies. More-over, the project has base lined on board natural feature tracking instead of lidar for providing the on board navigation state update during the TAG sequence. This paper summarizes the improvements in error source estimation, enhancements in on board trajectory correction, and results of recent Monte Carlo simulation to en-able sample collection with the given constraints. TAG delivery and on board navigation performance are presented for the final four candidate TAG sites
Mandated data archiving greatly improves access to research data
The data underlying scientific papers should be accessible to researchers
both now and in the future, but how best can we ensure that these data are
available? Here we examine the effectiveness of four approaches to data
archiving: no stated archiving policy, recommending (but not requiring)
archiving, and two versions of mandating data deposition at acceptance. We
control for differences between data types by trying to obtain data from papers
that use a single, widespread population genetic analysis, STRUCTURE. At one
extreme, we found that mandated data archiving policies that require the
inclusion of a data availability statement in the manuscript improve the odds
of finding the data online almost a thousand-fold compared to having no policy.
However, archiving rates at journals with less stringent policies were only
very slightly higher than those with no policy at all. At one extreme, we found

Given the long term benefits of data accessibility to the academic community,
we believe that journal based mandatory data archiving policies and mandatory
data availability statements should be more widely adopted
Defining human mesenchymal stem cell efficacy in vivo
Allogeneic human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) can suppress graft versus host disease (GvHD) and have profound anti-inflammatory and regenerative capacity in stroke, infarct, spinal cord injury, meniscus regeneration, tendinitis, acute renal failure, and heart disease in human and animal models of disease. There is significant clinical hMSC variability in efficacy and the ultimate response in vivo. The challenge in hMSC based therapy is defining the efficacy of hMSC in vivo. Models which may provide insight into hMSC bioactivity in vivo would provide a means to distinguish hMSCs for clinical utility. hMSC function has been described as both regenerative and trophic through the production of bioactive factors. The regenerative component involves the multi-potentiality of hMSC progenitor differentiation. The secreted factors generated by the hMSCs are milieu and injury specific providing unique niches for responses in vivo. These bioactive factors are anti-scarring, angiogenic, anti-apoptotic as well as regenerative. Further, from an immunological standpoint, hMSC's can avoid host immune response, providing xenographic applications. To study the in vivo immuno-regulatory effectiveness of hMSCs, we used the ovalbumin challenge model of acute asthma. This is a quick 3 week in vivo pulmonary inflammation model with readily accessible ways of measuring effectiveness of hMSCs. Our data show that there is a direct correlation between the traditional ceramic cube score to hMSCs attenuation of cellular recruitment due to ovalbumin challenge. The results from these studies verify the in vivo immuno-modulator effectiveness of hMSCs and support the potential use of the ovalbumin model as an in vivo model of hMSC potency and efficacy. Our data also support future directions toward exploring hMSCs as an alternative therapeutic for the treatment of airway inflammation associated with asthma
