Statistical Mechanics of the Vicinal Surfaces with Adsorption

We study the vicinal surface with adsorption below the roughening temperature, using the restricted solid-on-solid model coupled with the Ising model. By the product-wavefunction renormalization group method, we calculate the surface gradient pp and the adsorption coverage Θ\Theta as a function of the Andreev field η\eta which makes surface tilt. Combining Monte Carlo calculations, we show that there emerges effective attraction between the steps. This attractive interaction leads to instability against step bunching.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, ISSI PDSC-2000, submitted to Surf. Sci. RevTeX 3.1 preprint styl

A PERIOD3 variant causes a circadian phenotype and is associated with a seasonal mood trait.

In humans, the connection between sleep and mood has long been recognized, although direct molecular evidence is lacking. We identified two rare variants in the circadian clock gene PERIOD3 (PER3-P415A/H417R) in humans with familial advanced sleep phase accompanied by higher Beck Depression Inventory and seasonality scores. hPER3-P415A/H417R transgenic mice showed an altered circadian period under constant light and exhibited phase shifts of the sleep-wake cycle in a short light period (photoperiod) paradigm. Molecular characterization revealed that the rare variants destabilized PER3 and failed to stabilize PERIOD1/2 proteins, which play critical roles in circadian timing. Although hPER3-P415A/H417R-Tg mice showed a mild depression-like phenotype, Per3 knockout mice demonstrated consistent depression-like behavior, particularly when studied under a short photoperiod, supporting a possible role for PER3 in mood regulation. These findings suggest that PER3 may be a nexus for sleep and mood regulation while fine-tuning these processes to adapt to seasonal changes

Statistical Mechanical Calculation of Anisotropic Step Stiffness of a Two-Dimensional Hexagonal Lattice Gas Model with Next-Nearest-Neighbor Interactions: Application to Si(111) Surface

We study a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice gas model with both nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions in a staggered field, which describes the surface of stoichiometrically binary crystal. We calculate anisotropic step tension, step stiffness, and equilibrium island shape, by an extended random walk method. We apply the results to Si(111) 7×\times7 reconstructed surface and high-temperature Si(111) 1×\times1 surface. We also calculate inter-step interaction coefficient.Comment: revised on May 29 1999: RevTeX v3.1, 10 pages with 9 figures (one figure added

Importance of feeding status evaluation in older patients undergoing hemodialysis

    Get PDF
Older hospitalized patients undergoing hemodialysis are increasingly experiencing malnutrition caused by dysphagia. However, only a few studies have focused on this problem. We used the Kuchikara Taberu Balance Chart (KTBC) to evaluate the patients’ feeding status and examined its association with their nutritional status and prognosis. This study included elderly patients undergoing hemodialysis who were hospitalized at Nagasaki Renal Center for > 3 days between June 2021 and February 2022. In total, 82 inpatients were included [mean age, 73.4 ± 10.0 years; men, 57.3%; median dialysis vintage, 79.0 months (interquartile range, 37.3–164.8)]. We classified patients with lower than the median KTBC score (57 points) as being at risk for dysphagia; 37 patients (45.1%) were at risk for dysphagia. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient (ρ) elucidated that the KTBC total score was significantly associated with each nutritional indicator [serum albumin level (ρ = 0.505, p < 0.001); geriatric nutritional risk index (ρ = 0.600, p < 0.001); and nutritional risk index (ρ = -0.566, p < 0.001)]. The KTBC score was also closely associated with the body mass index (ρ = 0.228, p = 0.04). Patients with a lower KTBC score showed poor prognosis (log-rank test: p = 0.001), and age- and sex-adjusted Cox proportional analysis showed that the KTBC score was associated with life prognosis (hazard ratio, 0.90; 95% confidential interval, 0.86–0.94; p < 0.001). Therefore, we concluded that the patients at risk of dysphagia, identified using the KTBC score, were malnourished and had a poor prognosis. Hence, the evaluation of dysphagia using the KTBC is encouraged to prevent malnutrition in vulnerable older patients undergoing hemodialysis

External Pancreatic Juice Drainage Through a Percutaneous Endoscopic Drainage Tube for the Patient With a Postoperative Pancreatic Juice Leakage

    Get PDF
Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) has been widely accepted for patients who have no swallowing ability but have an intact gut. Its clinical application is mainly for nutritional support and decompression of the intestine in patients with bowel obstruction. In this paper, we report external pancreatic juice drainage through a percutaneous endoscopic drainage tube in a patient with postoperative pancreatic juice leakage. Soon after this procedure, pancreatic juice leakage subsided. This procedure was minimally invasive for the patient and may be a new application of PEG to maintain the good quality of life (QOL) in a patient with pancreatic juice leakage

Vicinal Surface with Langmuir Adsorption: A Decorated Restricted Solid-on-solid Model

We study the vicinal surface of the restricted solid-on-solid model coupled with the Langmuir adsorbates which we regard as two-dimensional lattice gas without lateral interaction. The effect of the vapor pressure of the adsorbates in the environmental phase is taken into consideration through the chemical potential. We calculate the surface free energy ff, the adsorption coverage Θ\Theta, the step tension γ\gamma, and the step stiffness γ~\tilde{\gamma} by the transfer matrix method combined with the density-matrix algorithm. Detailed step-density-dependence of ff and Θ\Theta is obtained. We draw the roughening transition curve in the plane of the temperature and the chemical potential of adsorbates. We find the multi-reentrant roughening transition accompanying the inverse roughening phenomena. We also find quasi-reentrant behavior in the step tension.Comment: 7 pages, 12 figures (png format), RevTeX 3.1, submitted to Phys. Rev.

Anti-NXP2 autoantibodies in adult patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies: Possible association with malignancy

    Get PDF
Objectives: Myositis-specific autoantibodies (MSAs) are useful tools for identifying clinically homogeneous subsets and predicting prognosis of patients with idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) including polymyositis (PM) and dermatomyositis (DM). Recent studies have shown that anti-NXP2 antibody (Ab) is a major MSA in juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM). In this study the frequencies and clinical associations of anti-NXP2 Ab were evaluated in adult patients with IIM. Methods: Clinical data and serum samples were collected from 507 adult Japanese patients with IIM (445 with DM and 62 with PM). Eleven patients with JDM, 108 with systemic lupus erythematosus, 433 with systemic sclerosis and 124 with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis were assessed as disease controls. Serum was examined for anti-NXP2 Ab by immunoprecipitation and western blotting using polyclonal anti-NXP2 Ab. Results: Seven patients (1.6%) with adult DM and one (1.6%) with adult PM were positive for anti-NXP2 Ab. Except for two patients with JDM, none of the disease controls were positive for this autoantibody. Among eight adult patients with IIM, three had internal malignancies within 3 years of diagnosis of IIM. Another patient with DM also had a metastatic cancer at the diagnosis. All of the carcinomas were at an advanced stage (stage IIIb-IV). Conclusions: While less common than in juvenile IIM, anti-NXP2 Ab was found in adult IIM. Anti-NXP2 Ab may be associated with adult IIM with malignancy
