The single electron R-pump: first experiment
We fabricated and tested the single electron R-pump, i.e. a three-junction Al
circuit with on-chip Cr resistors. We show that due to the presence of the
resistors (R > h/e^2 = 25.8 kOhm), the accuracy of electron transfer in the
R-pump can approach the level of 10^-8. Preliminary results of experiment with
the R-pump made at PTB are reported.Comment: 2 pages, incl. 3 figure
On the comparison between the LISFLOOD modelled and the ERS/SCAT derived soil moisture estimates
In order to evaluate the reliability of the soil moisture product obtained by means of the LISFLOOD hydrological model (De Roo et al., 2000), we compare it to soil moisture estimates derived from ERS scatterometer data (Wagner et al., 1999b).

Once evaluated the effect of scale mismatch, we calculate the root mean square error and the correlation between the two soil moisture time series on a pixel basis and we assess the fraction of variance that can be explained by a set of input parameter fields that vary from elevation and soil depth to rainfall statistics and missing or snow covered ERS images.

The two datasets show good agreement over large regions, with 90% of the area having a positive correlation coefficient and 66% having a root mean square error minor than 0.5 pF units. Major inconsistencies are located in mountainous regions such as the Alps or Scandinavia where both the methodologies suffer from insufficiently resolved land surface processes at the given spatial resolution, as well as from limited availability of satellite data on the one hand and the uncertainties in meteorological data retrieval on the other hand
Storage capabilities of a 4-junction single electron trap with an on-chip resistor
We report on the operation of a single electron trap comprising a chain of
four Al/AlOx/Al tunnel junctions attached, at one side, to a memory island and,
at the other side, to a miniature on-chip Cr resistor R=50 kOhm which served to
suppress cotunneling. At appropriate voltage bias the bi-stable states of the
trap, with the charges differing by the elementary charge e, were realized. At
low temperature, spontaneous switching between these states was found to be
infrequent. For instance, at T=70 mK the system was capable of holding an
electron for more than 2 hours, this time being limited by the time of the
measurement.Comment: 3 pages of text and 2 figure
Flame fronts in Supernovae Ia and their pulsational stability
The structure of the deflagration burning front in type Ia supernovae is
considered. The parameters of the flame are obtained: its normal velocity and
thickness. The results are in good agreement with the previous works of
different authors. The problem of pulsation instability of the flame, subject
to plane perturbations, is studied. First, with the artificial system with
switched-off hydrodynamics the possibility of secondary reactions to stabilize
the front is shown. Second, with account of hydrodynamics, realistic EOS and
thermal conduction we can obtain pulsations when Zeldovich number was
artificially increased. The critical Zeldovich numbers are presented. These
results show the stability of the flame in type Ia supernovae against
pulsations because its effective Zeldovich number is small.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figure
