    Remanufacturing could become a cornerstone of a future sustainable society and considerable progress has been made towards finding technical solutions for the renovation of products or selected components. Not all the barriers to remanufacturing are purely technical, however; others are related to business drivers, or social factors. The problems anticipated for remanufacturing, as identified by Guide [1] include “stochastic product returns, imbalances in return and demand rates, and the unknown condition of returned products.” In order to investigate the significance of these problems, a simulation model was constructed to explore the costs and benefits of a range of different end-of-life (EOL) strategies. It suggests that environmental harm can be reduced to an extent, when a company is set up to process returned goods, but that this benefit comes at the cost of considerable complications in scheduling and logistics

    Symbiotic Assembly Systems – A New Paradigm

    AbstractAssembly systems have been pressed in recent years to provide highly adaptable and quickly deployable solutions in order to deal with unpredictable changes following market trends. This has led to the development of multiple paradigms, namely Flexible Assembly System, Holonic Assembly Systems, Evolvable Assembly Systems, Modular Assembly systems, etc. Mostly these focus on increasing availability of automation, however this focus has overshadowed the human element in assembly systems. The lack of a clear human element in these approaches resulted in non-necessary automation and increase complexity. This paper proposes a new paradigm of Symbiotic Assembly Systems (SAS) in order to integrate the human aspects into these developments. The motivation is human actors should be treated as an intrinsic component of assembly systems. This would result in a system that can take advantage of its component's individual strengths (human or machines), and create a symbiotic environment. Beyond machine automation, human interventions in the system need not only to be modelled as processes but also integrated into the whole system operation. The idea builds on biological systems and their ability to establish symbiotic environments resulting in optimal collaborations. This paper proposes the conceptual vision of Symbiotic Assembly Systems and identifies the necessary developments required to achieve such paradigm. Furthermore it reports on how the developments from other paradigms can be integrated into SAS. An illustrative example is presented to demonstrate the potential of this approach

    Towards an ontology framework for the integrated design of modular assembly systems

    Next generation manufacturing companies have to become highly responsive in order to succeed in an ever more rapidly changing global market. The ability to effectively develop and adapt their assembly facilities (systems) to changing requirements on demand plays a crucial role in achieving high responsiveness since the assembly process has to deal with the full inherent complexity of increasingly mass-customised products. This work was motivated by the current lack of a holistic assembly system design theory that would enable design environments to address the need for rapid system development and adaptation. The challenge is to create a common environment where domain experts can effectively collaborate while taking advantage of the best practices of their diverse domains. This thesis investigates how a domain ontology can help to overcome those challenges. The approach is taking advantage of the higher levels of standardisation inherent in the modular assembly system paradigm which is considered to be one of the fundamental enabling factors to achieve a high level of adaptation. A new ontology framework has been developed to support the design and adaptation of modular assembly systems (ONTOMAS). The ONTOMAS framework is based on engineering ontology principles structuring the domain using formalisms for aggregation, topology, taxonomies, and system theory principles. A number of design patterns have been identified and formalised to support key design decision-making tasks during the design of modular assembly systems. Furthermore, the function-behaviour-structure paradigm has been applied to capture the characteristics of modular assembly equipment at different levels of abstraction that reflect the specific needs of the engineering design process. The proposed ONTOMAS framework provides a sound foundation for computer based support tools to reduce the assembly system design effort and time while maintaining a high level of quality. An integrated design framework for the requirements driven specification of assembly processes and configuration of modular assembly system has been developed. The design approach applies the new formalisms of ONTOMAS to support the design decision-making activities. The developed ONTOMAS framework has been applied in several industrial and synthetic use cases to verify its applicability and appropriateness. Furthermore, the new ontology and design framework have been used as foundation for the development of a prototype collaborative design environment which allows different domain experts to participate in the design of modular assembly systems

    A transformation of human operation approach to inform system design for automation

    Design of automation system relies on experts’ knowledge and experience accumulated from past solutions. In designing novel solutions, however, it is difficult to apply past knowledge and achieve design right-first-time, therefore wasting valuable resources and time. SADT/IDEF0 models are commonly used by automation experts to model manufacturing systems based on the manual process. However, function generalisation without benchmarking is difficult for experts particularly for complex and highly skilled-based tasks. This paper proposes a functional task abstraction approach to support automation design specification based on human factor attributes. A semi-automated clustering approach is developed to identify key functions from an observed manual process. The proposed approach is tested on five different automation case studies. The results indicate the proposed method reduces inconsistency in task abstraction when compared to the current approach that relies on the experts, which are further validated against the solutions generated by automation experts.</p

    Directly Printable Flexible Strain Sensors for Bending and Contact Feedback of Soft Actuators

    This paper presents a fully printable sensorized bending actuator that can be calibrated to provide reliable bending feedback and simple contact detection. A soft bending actuator following a pleated morphology, as well as a flexible resistive strain sensor, were directly 3D printed using easily accessible FDM printer hardware with a dual-extrusion tool head. The flexible sensor was directly welded to the bending actuator’s body and systematically tested to characterize and evaluate its response under variable input pressure. A signal conditioning circuit was developed to enhance the quality of the sensory feedback, and flexible conductive threads were used for wiring. The sensorized actuator’s response was then calibrated using a vision system to convert the sensory readings to real bending angle values. The empirical relationship was derived using linear regression and validated at untrained input conditions to evaluate its accuracy. Furthermore, the sensorized actuator was tested in a constrained setup that prevents bending, to evaluate the potential of using the same sensor for simple contact detection by comparing the constrained and free-bending responses at the same input pressures. The results of this work demonstrated how a dual-extrusion FDM printing process can be tuned to directly print highly customizable flexible strain sensors that were able to provide reliable bending feedback and basic contact detection. The addition of such sensing capability to bending actuators enhances their functionality and reliability for applications such as controlled soft grasping, flexible wearables, and haptic devices

    A comparison of the manufacturing resilience between fixed automation systems and mobile robots in large structure assembly

    The modern manufacturing industry is undergoing major transformations due to global competition and rapidly changing market demands. Traditional systems with rigid structures are very difficult to reconfigure every time a change in production is required. A promising alternative to these is seen in mobile, self-organising manufacturing systems, where self-deploying and independent entities such as mobile robots are used to facilitate a more reconfigurable assembly process. In addition, an integral part of manufacturing is the transportation of components within the manufacturing environment. Conveyor systems are often unsuitable for moving components that are large, heavy or awkward, making them difficult to use in large structure assembly. Currently, such components are commonly transported by cranes to dedicated automation systems which are seen as expensive and unadaptable. In this paper we investigate the differences in resilience to variations between a set of mobile robots and the widely accepted fixed automation systems under different conditions. Therefore, instead of transporting components or parts to manufacturing equipment we analyse the potential benefits of transporting the equipment to the large parts. By means of simulations, the two systems are compared to one-another in scenarios of identical part arrival times and part processing capacities. Assuming equal production rates, we assess their ability to respond to (1) rush orders, (2) variable arrival times and (3) production mix variation. Currently, there are no specific algorithms for process control of such mobile systems. For this reason we apply the First-In-First-Out task-selection rule.
