The development of an interactive multimedia based professional development

The role of the teacher has changed over time such that teachers are asked to augment their own specialist knowledge with skills from other domains, for example information technology. This study has examined the perceptions and experiences of teachers and speech pathologists involved in the production of an instructive Interactive Multimedia (IMM) product to deliver Professional Development (PD). The individuals involved in this project were teachers from the High Valley Language School (HVLS) -a specialised primary school. The study used a social action research methodology, which allowed the researcher to build theories from emergent data. The data collection process consisted of observations, journals, meeting minutes, and interviews. The data was analysed primarily using a qualitative perspective. Qualitative research methods allow phenomena to be studied in greater depth. The study outlined the need to understand what factors determined the feasibility of such IMM projects, and what attributes form the baseline of skills needed to achieve success. This study also outlined existing research and development methodologies that can assist in unfamiliar project domains. The results of the study show that while the team members were not trained in informatim1 technology development, they were relatively well equipped to adapt to large tasks and the creation of Educational Interactive Multimedia. The team members displayed how the use of existing skills and problem solving techniques from their domain can be used to solve problems that crossover into the information technology domain

Linguistic theory and 'communicattve' modern language, teaching: the future shows change

    Get PDF
According to one of its foremost proponents the influence of transformational generative linguistics (TGG) is waning. This waning influence can be noticed largely in disciplines related to linguistics such as psychology but not among many professional linguistis and language teachers. If this is so, two questions might be asked before a look into the future can be attempted: (1) Wha was transformational grammar? And (2) How dtd it affect language teaching in general and TESL in particular? These two questions are related to two other questions. 1) What was the extent of the inlluence of TCG on language teaching? and (2) How long will this influence remain? The answers to these two questions are largely speculative but are nevertheless interesting and hence are the focus of this report

Plant-made oral vaccines evaluation of capsules

Antigen expression through the Chloroplast Transformation Technology (CTT) produces bioencapsulated subunit-vaccines, capable of eliciting immune responses when delivered orally. Considerable challenges to effective plant-based vaccines are the normalization of dosage and preservation of accumulated antigen, which is complicated by variable high water content and protease activity. This study critically examines the efficacy of lyophilization in dehydrating plant-tissues and preserving plant-derived antigens with vaccine potential. Lyophilization was optimized through gravimetric analysis using lettuce expressing Protective Antigen (PA) of Bacillus anthracis (LS-HPAG) and the human autoantigen Proinsulin (Pins) fused to Cholera toxin subunit B (LS-CTB-Pins). Lyophilization for 48-hours was sufficient treatment to reduce lettuce to 4.57% of its original weight, which retained .058% water content in the bound state; these levels corresponded with oven-dried controls while antigen was stabilized for over a year of storage at room temperature. A simulated gastric fluid assay was applied to evaluate stability of plant derived antigens during digestion. It was observed that lettuce plant cells conferred protection through antigen bioencapsulation for up to an hour under enzymatic digestive conditions. LS-HPAG immunogenicity was then demonstrated through the induction of a PA-specific IgG response by through oral boosting of C57/BL6 test mice. Survival during toxin challenge demonstrated a protective immune response if 40% of animal immunized by plant-derived PA. Lastly, the inclusion of excipient and adjuvant additives will be considered and utilized for the development of prototype vaccine capsule formulations

Referendum on the Revolution: The Pennsylvania Constitutional Debate, 1776-1784

    Get PDF
The Pennsylvania constitution of 1776 ignited an extensive and intractable debate that remained at the center of the state’s politics throughout the Revolutionary period. This debate encompassed disagreement over a broad range of questions relating to the relationship between government and society, many of which brought into question the implications of the concept of popular sovereignty for governmental structure and popular political agency. Competing notions regarding these issues, while expressed within a general framework of consensus concerning the source of political authority [the people], revealed fundamentally different visions of governmental order. Partisans presented these visions as inextricably connected to their respective understandings of the American Revolution. This debate suggests that constitutionalism and political ideology were closely connected to, and mutually informative of, one another during the Revolution and that factions within the Patriot cause perceived their differing visions of government and brands of constitutionalism as inseparable from the cause of the Revolution itself
