Observation of medium-induced yield enhancement and acoplanarity broadening of low-pTp_\mathrm{T} jets from measurements in pp and central Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02 TeV

    No full text
International audienceThe ALICE Collaboration reports the measurement of semi-inclusive distributions of charged-particle jets recoiling from a high transverse momentum (high pTp_{\rm T}) hadron trigger in proton-proton and central Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02 TeV. A data-driven statistical method is used to mitigate the large uncorrelated background in central Pb-Pb collisions. Recoil jet distributions are reported for jet resolution parameter R=0.2R=0.2, 0.4, and 0.5 in the range 7<pT,jet<1407 < p_{\rm T,jet} < 140 GeV/c/c and trigger-recoil jet azimuthal separation π/2<Δφ<π\pi/2 < \Delta\varphi < \pi. The measurements exhibit a marked medium-induced jet yield enhancement at low pTp_{\rm T} and at large azimuthal deviation from Δφπ\Delta\varphi\sim\pi. The enhancement is characterized by its dependence on Δφ\Delta\varphi, which has a slope that differs from zero by 4.7σ\sigma. Comparisons to model calculations incorporating different formulations of jet quenching are reported. These comparisons indicate that the observed yield enhancement arises from the response of the QGP medium to jet propagation

Charged-particle production as a function of the relative transverse activity classifier in pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC

International audienceMeasurements of charged-particle production in pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions in the toward, away, and transverse regions with the ALICE detector are discussed. These regions are defined event-by-event relative to the azimuthal direction of the charged trigger particle, which is the reconstructed particle with the largest transverse momentum (pTtrigp_{\mathrm{T}}^{\rm trig}) in the range 8<pTtrig<158<p_{\mathrm{T}}^{\rm trig}<15 GeV/c/c. The toward and away regions contain the primary and recoil jets, respectively; both regions are accompanied by the underlying event (UE). In contrast, the transverse region perpendicular to the direction of the trigger particle is dominated by the so-called UE dynamics, and includes also contributions from initial- and final-state radiation. The relative transverse activity classifier, RT=NchT/NchTR_{\mathrm{T}}=N_{\mathrm{ch}}^{\mathrm{T}}/\langle N_{\mathrm{ch}}^{\mathrm{T}}\rangle, is used to group events according to their UE activity, where NchTN_{\mathrm{ch}}^{\mathrm{T}} is the charged-particle multiplicity per event in the transverse region and NchT\langle N_{\mathrm{ch}}^{\mathrm{T}}\rangle is the mean value over the whole analysed sample. The energy dependence of the RTR_{\mathrm{T}} distributions in pp collisions at s=2.76\sqrt{s}=2.76, 5.02, 7, and 13 TeV is reported, exploring the Koba-Nielsen-Olesen (KNO) scaling properties of the multiplicity distributions. The first measurements of charged-particle pTp_{\rm T} spectra as a function of RTR_{\mathrm{T}} in the three azimuthal regions in pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02 TeV are also reported. Data are compared with predictions obtained from the event generators PYTHIA 8 and EPOS LHC. This set of measurements is expected to contribute to the understanding of the origin of collective-like effects in small collision systems (pp and p-Pb)

Multiplicity dependence of charged-particle intra-jet properties in pp collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

International audienceThe first measurement of the multiplicity dependence of intra-jet properties of leading charged-particle jets in proton-proton (pp) collisions is reported. The mean charged-particle multiplicity and jet fragmentation distributions are measured in minimum-bias and high-multiplicity pp collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV using the ALICE detector. Jets are reconstructed from charged particles produced in the midrapidity region (η<0.9|\eta| < 0.9) using the sequential recombination anti-kTk_{\rm T} algorithm with jet resolution parameters RR = 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 for the transverse momentum (pTp_{\rm T}) interval 5-110 GeV/cc. High-multiplicity events are selected by the forward V0 scintillator detectors. The mean charged-particle multiplicity inside the leading jet cone rises monotonically with increasing jet pTp_{\rm T} in qualitative agreement with previous measurements at lower energies. The distributions of jet fragmentation functions zchz^{\rm ch} and ξch\xi^{\rm ch} are measured for different jet-pTp_{\rm T} intervals. Jet-pTp_{\rm T} independent fragmentation of leading jets is observed for wider jets except at high- and low-zchz^{\rm ch}. The observed "hump-backed plateau" structure in the ξch\xi^{\rm ch} distribution indicates suppression of low-pTp_{\rm T} particles. In high-multiplicity events, an enhancement of the fragmentation probability of low-zchz^{\rm ch} particles accompanied by a suppression of high-zchz^{\rm ch} particles is observed compared to minimum-bias events. This behavior becomes more prominent for low-pTp_{\rm T} jets with larger jet radius. The results are compared with predictions of QCD-inspired event generators, PYTHIA 8 with Monash 2013 tune and EPOS LHC. It is found that PYTHIA 8 qualitatively reproduces the jet modification in high-multiplicity events except at high jet pTp_{\rm T}. These measurements provide important constraints to models of jet fragmentation

Exploring nuclear structure with multiparticle azimuthal correlations at the LHC

International audienceUnderstanding nuclear structure provides essential insights into the properties of atomic nuclei. In this paper, details of the nuclear structure of 129^{\rm 129}Xe, such as the quadrupole deformation and the nuclear diffuseness, are studied by extensive measurements of anisotropic-flow-related observables in Xe-Xe collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sNN=5.44\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.44 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The results are compared with those from Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02 TeV for a baseline, given that the 208^{\rm 208}Pb nucleus is not deformed. Furthermore, comprehensive comparisons are performed with a state-of-the-art hybrid model using IP-Glasma+MUSIC+UrQMD. It is found that among various IP-Glasma+MUSIC+UrQMD calculations with different values of nuclear parameters, the one using a nuclear diffuseness parameter of a0=0.492a_0=0.492 and a nuclear quadrupole deformation parameter of β2=0.207\beta_2=0.207 provides a better description of the presented flow measurements. These studies represent an important step towards a thorough exploration of the imaging power of nuclear collisions at ultrarelativistic energy and the search for the imprint of nuclear structure on various flow observables in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC. The findings demonstrate the potential of nuclear structure studies at the TeV energy scale and highlight that the LHC experiments can complement existing low-energy experiments on nuclear structure studies

Charm fragmentation fractions and cc{\rm c\overline{c}} cross section in p-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02 TeV

International audienceThe total charm-quark production cross section per unit of rapidity dσ(cc)/dy\mathrm{d}\sigma({\rm c\overline{c}})/\mathrm{d}y, and the fragmentation fractions of charm quarks to different charm-hadron species f(chc)f(\mathrm{c}\rightarrow {\rm h_{c}}), are measured for the first time in p-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 5.02 TeV at midrapidity (0.96<y<0.04-0.96<y<0.04 in the centre-of-mass frame) using data collected by ALICE at the CERN LHC. The results are obtained based on all the available measurements of prompt production of ground-state charm-hadron species: D0\mathrm{D}^{0}, D+\mathrm{D}^{+}, Ds+\mathrm{D}_\mathrm{s}^{+}, and J/ψ\mathrm{J/\psi} mesons, and Λc+\Lambda_\mathrm{c}^{+} and Ξc0\Xi_{\rm c}^{0} baryons. The resulting cross section is dσ(cc)/dy=219.6±6.3  (stat.)  11.8+10.5  (syst.)  2.9+7.6  (extr.)±5.4  (BR)±4.6  (lumi.)±19.5  (rapidity shape)+15.0  (Ωc0)\mathrm{d}\sigma({\rm c\overline{c}})/\mathrm{d}y =219.6 \pm 6.3\;(\mathrm{stat.}) {\;}_{-11.8}^{+10.5}\;(\mathrm{syst.}) {\;}_{-2.9}^{+7.6}\;(\mathrm{extr.})\pm 5.4\;(\mathrm{BR})\pm 4.6\;(\mathrm{lumi.}) \pm 19.5\;(\text{rapidity shape})+15.0\;(\Omega_{\rm c}^{0}) mb, which is consistent with a binary scaling of pQCD calculations from pp collisions. The measured fragmentation fractions are compatible with those measured in pp collisions at s=5.02\sqrt{s} = 5.02 and 1313 TeV, showing an increase in the relative production rates of charm baryons with respect to charm mesons in pp and p-Pb collisions compared with e+e\mathrm{e^{+}e^{-}} and ep\mathrm{e^{-}p} collisions. The pTp_\mathrm{T}-integrated nuclear modification factor of charm quarks, RpPb(cc)=0.91±0.04  (stat.)0.09+0.08  (syst.)0.03+0.04  (extr.)±0.03  (lumi.)R_\mathrm{pPb}({\rm c\overline{c}})= 0.91 \pm 0.04\;{\rm (stat.)}{}^{+0.08}_{-0.09}\;{\rm (syst.)}{}^{+0.04}_{-0.03}\;{\rm (extr.)}{}\pm 0.03\;{\rm (lumi.)}, is found to be consistent with unity and with theoretical predictions including nuclear modifications of the parton distribution functions

Measurement of the inclusive isolated-photon production cross section in pp collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

International audienceThe production cross section of inclusive isolated photons has been measured by the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC in pp collisions at centre-of-momentum energy of s=13\sqrt{s}=13 TeV collected during the LHC Run 2 data-taking period. The measurement is performed by combining the measurements of the electromagnetic calorimeter EMCal and the central tracking detectors ITS and TPC, covering a pseudorapidity range of ηγ<0.67|\eta^{\gamma}|<0.67 and a transverse momentum range of 7<pTγ<2007<p_{\rm T}^{\gamma}<200 GeV/cc. The result extends to lower pTγp_{\rm T}^{\gamma} and xTγ=2pTγ/sx_{\rm T}^{\gamma} = 2p_{\rm T}^{\gamma}/\sqrt{s} ranges, the lowest xTγx_{\rm T}^{\gamma} of any isolated photon measurements to date, extending significantly those measured by the ATLAS and CMS experiments towards lower pTγp_{\rm T}^{\gamma} at the same collision energy with a small overlap between the measurements. The measurement is compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations and the results from the ATLAS and CMS experiments as well as with measurements at other collision energies. The measurement and theory prediction are in agreement with each other within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties

Measurement of beauty production via non-prompt charm hadrons in p-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02 TeV

International audienceThe production cross sections of D0\mathrm {D^0}, D+\mathrm {D^+}, and Λc+\mathrm {\Lambda_{c}^{+}} hadrons originating from beauty-hadron decays (i.e. non-prompt) were measured for the first time at midrapidity in proton-lead (p-Pb) collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02 TeV. Nuclear modification factors (RpPbR_{\mathrm {pPb}}) of non-prompt D0\mathrm {D^0}, D+\mathrm {D^+}, and Λc+\mathrm {\Lambda_{c}^{+}} are calculated as a function of the transverse momentum (pTp_{\mathrm T}) to investigate the modification of the momentum spectra measured in p-Pb collisions with respect to those measured in proton-proton (pp) collisions at the same energy. The RpPbR_{\mathrm {pPb}} measurements are compatible with unity and with the measurements in the prompt charm sector, and do not show a significant pTp_{\mathrm T} dependence. The pTp_{\mathrm T}-integrated cross sections and pTp_{\mathrm T}-integrated RpPbR_{\mathrm {pPb}} of non-prompt D0\mathrm {D^0} and D+\mathrm {D^+} mesons are also computed by extrapolating the visible cross sections down to pTp_{\mathrm T} = 0. The non-prompt D-meson RpPbR_{\mathrm {pPb}} integrated over pTp_{\mathrm T} is compatible with unity and with model calculations implementing modification of the parton distribution functions of nucleons bound in nuclei with respect to free nucleons. The non-prompt Λc+/D0\mathrm {\Lambda_{c}^{+}/D^{0}} and D+/D0\mathrm{D^+/D^0} production ratios are computed to investigate hadronisation mechanisms of beauty quarks into mesons and baryons. The measured ratios as a function of pTp_{\mathrm T} display a similar trend to that measured for charm hadrons in the same collision system

    Measurement of Λ3H{}_{\Lambda}^{3}\mathrm{H} production in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02 TeV

    No full text
International audienceThe first measurement of Λ3H_{\Lambda}^{3}\mathrm{H} and Λ3H^3_ {\overline{\Lambda}}\overline{\mathrm{H}} differential production with respect to transverse momentum and centrality in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02~TeV is presented. The Λ3H_{\Lambda}^{3}\mathrm{H} has been reconstructed via its two-charged-body decay channel, i.e., Λ3H3He+π_{\Lambda}^{3}\mathrm{H} \rightarrow {}^{3}\mathrm{He} + \pi^{-}. A Blast-Wave model fit of the pTp_{\rm T}-differential spectra of all nuclear species measured by the ALICE collaboration suggests that the Λ3H_{\Lambda}^{3}\mathrm{H} kinetic freeze-out surface is consistent with that of other nuclei. The ratio between the integrated yields of Λ3H_{\Lambda}^{3}\mathrm{H} and 3He^3\mathrm{He} is compared to predictions from the statistical hadronisation model and the coalescence model, with the latter being favoured by the presented measurements

Investigating strangeness enhancement in jet and medium via ϕ\phi(1020) production in p-Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02 TeV

    No full text
International audienceThis work aims to differentiate strangeness produced from hard processes (jet-like) and softer processes (underlying event) by measuring the angular correlation between a high-momentum trigger hadron (h) acting as a jet-proxy and a produced strange hadron (ϕ(1020)\phi(1020) meson). Measuring hϕ-\phi correlations at midrapidity in p-Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 5.02 TeV as a function of event multiplicity provides insight into the microscopic origin of strangeness enhancement in small collision systems. The jet-like and the underlying-event-like strangeness production are investigated as a function of event multiplicity. They are also compared between a lower and higher momentum region. The evolution of the per-trigger yields within the near-side (aligned with the trigger hadron) and away-side (in the opposite direction of the trigger hadron) jet is studied separately, allowing for the characterization of two distinct jet-like production regimes. Furthermore, the hϕ-\phi correlations within the underlying event give access to a production regime dominated by soft production processes, which can be compared directly to the in-jet production. Comparisons between hϕ-\phi and dihadron correlations show that the observed strangeness enhancement is largely driven by the underlying event, where the ϕ/h\phi/\mathrm{h} ratio is significantly larger than within the jet regions. As multiplicity increases, the fraction of the total ϕ(1020)\phi(1020) yield coming from jets decreases compared to the underlying event production, leading to high-multiplicity events being dominated by the increased strangeness production from the underlying event

Measurement of the inclusive isolated-photon production cross section in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02 TeV

    No full text
International audienceThe ALICE Collaboration at the CERN LHC has measured the inclusive production cross section of isolated photons at midrapidity as a function of the photon transverse momentum (pTγp_{\rm T}^{\gamma}), in Pb-Pb collisions in different centrality intervals, and in pp collisions, at centre-of-momentum energy per nucleon pair of sNN=5.02\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02 TeV. The photon transverse momentum range is between 10-14 and 40-140 GeV/cc, depending on the collision system and on the Pb-Pb centrality class. The result extends to lower pTγp_{\rm T}^{\gamma} than previously published results by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the same collision energy. The covered pseudorapidity range is ηγ<0.67|\eta^{\gamma}| <0.67. The isolation selection is based on a charged particle isolation momentum threshold pTiso, ch=1.5p_{\rm T}^{\rm iso,~ch} = 1.5 GeV/cc within a cone of radii R=0.2R=0.2 and 0.40.4. The nuclear modification factor is calculated and found to be consistent with unity in all centrality classes, and also consistent with the HG-PYTHIA model, which describes the event selection and geometry biases that affect the centrality determination in peripheral Pb-Pb collisions. The measurement is compared to next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations and to the measurements of isolated photons and Z0^0 bosons from the CMS experiment, which are all found to be in agreement
