Exploitation of the brown mussel Perna indica (Kuriakose and Nair) from selected centres along The west coast of Tamil Nadu
The brown mussel, Pema vndica. Is found abundantly on intertldal and subtidal rocks along This study was undertaken to determine the current level of exploitation from selected centres along the west coast of Tamil Nadu, since estimates of catch and effort form part of the basic information required for fishery
management

Man began to think of fish culture when he realised that
the oceans and other waterbodies could not provide sufficient
fish to meet the demand of increasing population. This led
to the beginning of studies on the reproduction and nutritional
requirements of different species of fish.
Fish that grow in natural waters get their food from
their environment. They move in the sea, lake or river in
search of food and favourable conditions for growth and
reproduction. When fish are stocked in ponds and farms they
have to get additional supply of nutrients fi*om external
sources
Growth characteristics of certain estuarine phytoplankters
The growth constants, mean generation time, chlorophyll in relation to .
cell numbers and 4 uptake have been studied in a few unialgal cultures
of selected phytoplankters isolated from Cochin backwaters. Highest growth
constant and lowest mean generation time are obtained during the exponential
growth phase. The changes taking place in the growth kinetics on varying.
concentrations of essential nutrients have also been incorporated
Studies on lantern fish (Benthosema pterotum) 1. Biochemical and microbiological investigation
Lantern-fish, an under-utilised fish is present in abundance, all the year round in tropical and sub-tropical waters. Biochemical and microbiological studies carried out on lantern fish, caught from the Gulfs of Oman and Aden are reported in this paper
Quantitative ecology of phytoplankton in the Cochin backwater
A one-year study on the standing crop in terms of chlorophylls, primary
production and total-cell counts of four station grids has shown that there were
regional and seasonal variations in the magnitude of phytoplankton production in
the Cochin backwater. Statistically treated using a microcomputor, a multiple
regression relationship has been established between parameters within stations.
But th<^ Correlation coefBclent and Standard Regression coefficient have revealed
that the plankton production and the related parameters at all the stations were
independent of each other and the parameters varied from station to station. Probable
reasons are briefly discussed
Stock assessment of the brown mussel, Perna indica (Kuriakose and Nair) from the southwest coast of India
Estimated the population parameters and the maximum sustainable yield
(MSY) of the brown mussel Perna indica from the southwest coast of India.
Analysis using the length based Thompson and Bell's method indicated MSY
of 853 t, F_^,^ (X =) 1.4875 and mean biomass 961 t. Though the estimated
annual average catch is less than the MSY, an increase in effort is not
recommended since it will not lead to a considerable increase in the catch
Software Metrics Evaluation Based on Entropy
Software engineering activities in the Industry has come a long way with various improve- ments brought in various stages of the software development life cycle. The complexity of modern software, the commercial constraints and the expectation for high quality products demand the accurate fault prediction based on OO design metrics in the class level in the early stages of software development. The object oriented class metrics are used as quality predictors in the entire OO software development life cycle even when a highly iterative, incremental model or agile software process is employed. Recent research has shown some of the OO design metrics are useful for predicting fault-proneness of classes. In this paper the empirical validation of a set of metrics proposed by Chidamber and Kemerer is performed to assess their ability in predicting the software quality in terms of fault proneness and degradation. We have also proposed the design complexity of object-oriented software with Weighted Methods per Class metric (WMC-CK metric) expressed in terms of Shannon entropy, and error proneness
Quantitative assessment of the potential fishery resources of the Indian Ocean and adjoining seas
Even -though oceanic fisheries have bccome a major contributing factor in the world production of marine fish, for countries bordering the Indian Ocean which do not have large mechanized fishing fleet capable of operating far away from their ports, the fisheries of shallow-water areas are of primary interes
Recent trends in cephalopod fishery of Kerala coast
Since the Cephalopods have emerged as a valuable resource in recent times
because of the demand in export trade, constant monitoring of the fishery,
resource position and relevant biological aspects has become imperative.
The resource characteristics and biological aspects of cephalopods are
being regularly monitored at Vizhinjam, Cochin and Calicut by

Cytological studies on diploid and autotetraploid ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.)
Cytology of diploid and induced autotetl'aploid of ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) was studied. The diploid (2n=22) showed one or two associations offour chromosomes at first metaphase. The tetraploid formed a high frequency of quadrivalents at first metaphase. Both showed bridge-fragment configurations at first anaphase. Pol1en fertility was 13% in the diploid and 85% in the tetraploid.
