Long Range Scattering and Modified Wave Operators for some Hartree Type Equations

We study the theory of scattering for a class of Hartree type equations with long range interactions in space dimension n > 2, including Hartree equations with potential V(x) = lambda |x|^{- gamma} with gamma < 1. For 1/2 < gamma < 1 we prove the existence of modified wave operators with no size restriction on the data and we determine the asymptotic behaviour in time of solutions in the range of the wave operators.Comment: TeX, 89 pages, available http://qcd.th.u-psud.f

Composite-type Rb-87 optical-pumping light source for the rubidium frequency standard

    Get PDF
The light source is composed of a cylindrical Rb-87 lamp 10 mm diameter and a Rb-85 filter cell 3-7 mm long attached to the front flat face of the lamp. This composite type device is operated in an oven at about 100 C. Thus a light source for Rb-87 hyperfine optical pumping less than 4 cm long by 3 cm diameter was constructed

Basic Properties of a Vortex in a Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor

We numerically study the vortex core structure in a noncentrosymmetric superconductor such as CePt3Si without mirror symmetry about the xy plane. A single vortex along the z axis and a mixed singlet-triplet Cooper pairing model are considered. The spatial profiles of the pair potential, local density of states, supercurrent density, and radially-textured magnetic moment density around the vortex are obtained in the clean limit on the basis of the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity.Comment: 6 pages; submitted to Proc. of VORTEX I

Failure criterion of glass fabric reinforced plastic laminates

    Get PDF
Failure criteria are derived for several modes of failure (in unaxial tensile or compressive loading, or biaxial combined tensile-compressive loading) in the case of closely woven plain fabric, coarsely-woven plain fabric, or roving glass cloth reinforcements. The shear strength in the interaction formula is replaced by an equation dealing with tensile or compressive strength in the direction making a 45 degree angle with one of the anisotropic axes, for the uniaxial failure criteria. The interaction formula is useful as the failure criterion in combined tension-compression biaxial failure for the case of closely woven plain fabric laminates, but poor agreement is obtained in the case of coarsely woven fabric laminates

Temperature Dependence of the Superfluid Density in a Noncentrosymmetric Superconductor

    Get PDF
For a noncentrosymmetric superconductor such as CePt3Si, we consider a Cooper pairing model with a two-component order parameter composed of spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing components. We calculate the superfluid density tensor in the clean limit on the basis of the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity. We demonstrate that such a pairing model accounts for an experimentally observed feature of the temperature dependence of the London penetration depth in CePt3Si, i.e., line-node-gap behavior at low temperatures.Comment: 10 page

Depth/diameter relationships of fresh craters within Hesperia Planum, Mars

    Get PDF
Meteorite impact craters represent important geological features for revealing the near-surface layers of a planetary surface. In the case of Mars, this characteristic was proposed as a useful method to study spatial variations of such attributes as the distribution of sub-surface volatiles, and heat flow. Using the Planetary Image Cartography System (PICS) software, a quantitative analysis was completed of the geometry of fresh impact craters in the Hesperia Planum region of Mars, where an uniform target material and optimum viewing geometry make possible an analysis of target effects over a large geographic region. Because of the morphologic similarity to the lunar maria, it is likely that Hesperia Planum comprises a series of flood lavas that partially infilled topographic depressions within the Martian highlands. Measurements of partially buried crater rims suggest that the lava flows within Hesperia Planum are between 200-400 m thick

Analytical Formulation of the Local Density of States around a Vortex Core in Unconventional Superconductors

On the basis of the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity, we obtain a formula for the local density of states (LDOS) around a vortex core of superconductors with anisotropic pair-potential and Fermi surface in arbitrary directions of magnetic fields. Earlier results on the LDOS of d-wave superconductors and NbSe2_2 are naturally interpreted within our theory geometrically; the region with high intensity of the LDOS observed in numerical calculations turns out to the enveloping curve of the trajectory of Andreev bound states. We discuss experimental results on YNi2_2B2_2C within the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity.Comment: 13 pages, 16 figure

Massive Spin-2 fields of Geometric Origin in Curved Spacetimes

We study the consistency of a model which includes torsion as well as the metric as dynamical fields and has massive spin-2 particle in its spectrum. The massive spin-2 mode resides in the torsion, rather than in the metric. It is known that this model is tachyon- and ghost-free in Minkowski background. We show that this property remains valid and no other pathologies emerge in de Sitter and anti-de Sitter backgrounds, with some of our results extending to arbirary Einstein space backgrounds. This suggests that the model is consistent, at least at the classical level, unlike, e.g., the Fierz--Pauli theory.Comment: 17 pages, Clarifying remarks added in section 5, minor changes, version to be published in the Phys.
