    First Observations of Benthos and Seston from a Submersible in the Lower St. Lawrence Estuary

    Six dives with the submersible PISCES IV have permitted a unique description of the benthic and pelagic environments of a large, deep Canadian estuary. The estuarine floor and continental slopes are divided into five depth-dependent benthic zones. In order of decreasing depth are the Bathyal Trough Zone, the lnfaunal Zone, the Ophiura Zone, the Ice Rafting Zone and the Wave Base Zone. The zonal boundaries are based on changes in the faunal community, sediment texture, current energy, level of bioturbation and suspended particulate loading. Biological resuspension appears important in the Bathyal Trough and lnfaunal Zones. Current resuspension dominates the Ophiura and Ice Rafting Zones with storm waves additionally reworking the Wave-Base sediments. Seston characteristics are strongly influenced by the source and dynamics of the host water mass. The Surface Layer, the entrained outflow from the St. Lawrence River, is the source of most suspended matter found beneath. Large particles, mostly organo-mineral aggregates, become even larger with depth and indicate a rapid downward transfer of suspended sediment. The upper Intermediate Layer is complicated by stratified zones of turbulence that temporarily reduce the floe size. With the absence of such fine water structure, the lower Intermediate Layer is characterized by long chains of marine "snow" joined by delicate filaments. The Bottom Layer, a zone of increased turbulence, had aggregates breaking up into a haze of fine particles.Six plongées à bord du submersible Pisces IV ont permis de décrire les milieux benthique et pélagique de l'estuaire, large et profond, du Saint-Laurent. Le fond de l'estuaire et les talus continentaux ont été divisés, selon la profondeur, en cinq zones benthiques. Ce sont, du fond vers la surface, la zone bathyale du chenal Laurentien, la zone endobenthique, la zone à Ophiura, la zone de dépôts glaciels et la zone sous l'influence des vagues. Ces zones ont été déterminées à partir des variations des populations macrobenthiques, de la texture des sédiments, de l'énergie des courants, du niveau de bioturbation et de la concentration des particules en suspension. La resuspension biologique semble être importante dans les zones bathyale et endobenthique, mais la resuspension par les courants domine dans les trois autres zones. Les sédiments de la zone sous l'influence des vagues peuvent aussi être remaniés par les vagues de tempêtes. Les caractéristiques du seston sont fortement influencées par la source et la dynamique des différentes masses d'eau. Une grande partie du matériel en suspension provient de la couche superficielle, entraîné par le courant du Saint-Laurent. Les grosses particules, surtout les agrégats organo-minéraux, sont de plus en plus grosses en profondeur, ce qui suppose une descente rapide du matériel en suspension vers le fond. Dans la couche intermédiaire supérieure, des zones de turbulence stratifiées réduisent temporairement la taille des agrégats. La partie inférieure de la couche intermédiaire ne contient pas de ces stratifications fines et est plutôt caractérisée par la présence de longues chaînes de particules rattachées par un filament délicat. Der Aestuarboden und die Kon-tinentalhànge sind in fùnf tiefenbedingte benthische Zonen eingeteilt. Der Ordnung nach, in abnehmender Tiefe, liegen die bathyal Zone des Skt-Lorenz Kanals, die endobenthische Zone, die Ophiura Zone, die Eisstrandungs Zone und die Wellen-Einfluss-Zone. Die Zonengrenzen sind auf Verànderungen in der Faunenwelt, Sedimenttextur, Strômungsenergie, Niveau der Bioturbation und der Konzentration der Schwebstoffe gegrùndet. Biologische Resuspension ist in der bathyalen und endobentischen Zone wichtig, wàhrend die Resuspension durch die Strômung in der Ophiura und Eisstrandungszone ùberwiegt, mit zusàtzlicher Bearbeitung der Wellen-Basis-Elemente durch Sturmwellen. Seston Kennzeichen sind durch die Dynamik der Gastgewàsser stark beeinflusst. Ein grosser Teil der Schwebstoffe kommt aus der oberen Schicht und wird durch die Strômung des Skt Lorenz Stromes mitgeschleppt. Grosse Teile, meistens organischmineral Aggregate werden mit wachsender Tiefe noch grosser und zeigen ein schnelles Sinken der Schwebstoffe an. In der oberen Zwischenschicht verringern die stratifizierten Turbulen Zonen zeitweilig die Grosse der Aggregate. Der untere Teil der Zwischenschicht zeigt keine solche feinen Stratifikationen und kennzeichnet sich eher durch die Gegenwart von langen Ketten von Schwebstoffteilchen, die durch einen dùnnen Faden zusammenhalten.     Temporal course of cerebrospinal fluid dynamics and amyloid accumulation in the aging rat brain from three to thirty months

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Amyloid accumulation in the brain parenchyma is a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and is seen in normal aging. Alterations in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics are also associated with normal aging and AD. This study analyzed CSF volume, production and turnover rate in relation to amyloid-beta peptide (Aβ) accumulation in the aging rat brain.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Aging Fischer 344/Brown-Norway hybrid rats at 3, 12, 20, and 30 months were studied. CSF production was measured by ventriculo-cisternal perfusion with blue dextran in artificial CSF; CSF volume by MRI; and CSF turnover rate by dividing the CSF production rate by the volume of the CSF space. Aβ40 and Aβ42 concentrations in the cortex and hippocampus were measured by ELISA.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There was a significant linear increase in total cranial CSF volume with age: 3-20 months (<it>p </it>< 0.01); 3-30 months (<it>p </it>< 0.001). CSF production rate increased from 3-12 months (<it>p </it>< 0.01) and decreased from 12-30 months (<it>p </it>< 0.05). CSF turnover showed an initial increase from 3 months (9.40 day<sup>-1</sup>) to 12 months (11.30 day<sup>-1</sup>) and then a decrease to 20 months (10.23 day<sup>-1</sup>) and 30 months (6.62 day<sup>-1</sup>). Aβ40 and Aβ42 concentrations in brain increased from 3-30 months (<it>p </it>< 0.001). Both Aβ42 and Aβ40 concentrations approached a steady state level by 30 months.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In young rats there is no correlation between CSF turnover and Aβ brain concentrations. After 12 months, CSF turnover decreases as brain Aβ continues to accumulate. This decrease in CSF turnover rate may be one of several clearance pathway alterations that influence age-related accumulation of brain amyloid.</p

    A characteristic lengthscale causes anomalous size effects and boundary programmability in mechanical metamaterials

    The architecture of mechanical metamaterialsis designed to harness geometry, non-linearity and topology to obtain advanced functionalities such as shape morphing, programmability and one-way propagation. While a purely geometric framework successfully captures the physics of small systems under idealized conditions, large systems or heterogeneous driving conditions remain essentially unexplored. Here we uncover strong anomalies in the mechanics of a broad class of metamaterials, such as auxetics, shape-changers or topological insulators: a non-monotonic variation of their stiffness with system size, and the ability of textured boundaries to completely alter their properties. These striking features stem from the competition between rotation-based deformations---relevant for small systems---and ordinary elasticity, and are controlled by a characteristic length scale which is entirely tunable by the architectural details.     Amyloid-beta transporter expression at the blood-CSF barrier is age-dependent

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Age is the major risk factor for many neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). There is an accumulation of amyloid-beta peptides (Aβ) in both the AD brain and the normal aging brain. Clearance of Aβ from the brain occurs via active transport at the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier (BCSFB). With increasing age, the expression of the Aβ efflux transporters is decreased and the Aβ influx transporter expression is increased at the BBB, adding to the amyloid burden in the brain. Expression of the Aβ transporters at the choroid plexus (CP) epithelium as a function of aging was the subject of this study.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This project investigated the changes in expression of the Aβ transporters, the low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein-1 (LRP-1), P-glycoprotein (P-gp), LRP-2 (megalin) and the receptor for advanced glycation end-products (RAGE) at the BCSFB in Brown-Norway/Fischer rats at ages 3, 6, 9, 12, 20, 30 and 36 months, using real time RT-PCR to measure transporter mRNA expression, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) to measure transporter protein in isolated rat CP.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There was an increase in the transcription of the Aβ efflux transporters, LRP-1 and P-gp, no change in RAGE expression and a decrease in LRP-2, the CP epithelium influx transporter, at the BCSFB with aging. Decreased Aβ42 concentration in the CP, as measured by quantitative IHC, was associated with these Aβ transporter alterations.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Age-dependent alterations in the CP Aβ transporters are associated with a decrease in Aβ42 accumulation in the CP, and are reciprocal to the changes seen in these transporters at the BBB, suggesting a possible compensatory role for the BCSFB in Aβ clearance in aging.</p

    Theory of the Maxwell Pressure Tensor and the Tension in a Water Bridge

    A water bridge refers to an experimental "flexible cable" made up of pure deionized water which can hang across two supports maintained with a sufficiently large voltage difference. The resulting electric fields within the deionized water flexible cable, maintain a tension which sustains the water against the downward force of gravity. A detailed calculation of the water bridge tension will be provided in terms of the Maxwell pressure tensor in a dielectric fluid medium. General properties of the dielectric liquid pressure tensor are discussed along with unusual features of dielectric fluid Bernoulli flows in an electric field. Analogies between dielectric fluid Bernoulli flows in strong electric fields and quantum Bernoulli flows in superfluids are explored.Comment: 6 pages and 1 figur

    First Constraints on Source Counts at 350 Microns

    We have imaged a \sim6 arcminute2^2 region in the Bo\"otes Deep Field using the 350 μ\mum-optimised second generation Submillimeter High Angular Resolution Camera (SHARC II), achieving a peak 1σ\sigma sensitivity of \sim5 mJy. We detect three sources above 3σ\sigma, and determine a spurious source detection rate of 1.09 in our maps. In the absence of 5σ5\sigma detections, we rely on deep 24 μ\mum and 20 cm imaging to deduce which sources are most likely to be genuine, giving two real sources. From this we derive an integral source count of 0.840.61+1.39^{+1.39}_{-0.61} sources arcmin2^{-2} at S>13S>13 mJy, which is consistent with 350 μ\mum source count models that have an IR-luminous galaxy population evolving with redshift. We use these constraints to consider the future for ground-based short-submillimetre surveys.Comment: accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journa

    Evolution: Complexity, uncertainty and innovation

    Complexity science provides a general mathematical basis for evolutionary thinking. It makes us face the inherent, irreducible nature of uncertainty and the limits to knowledge and prediction. Complex, evolutionary systems work on the basis of on-going, continuous internal processes of exploration, experimentation and innovation at their underlying levels. This is acted upon by the level above, leading to a selection process on the lower levels and a probing of the stability of the level above. This could either be an organizational level above, or the potential market place. Models aimed at predicting system behaviour therefore consist of assumptions of constraints on the micro-level – and because of inertia or conformity may be approximately true for some unspecified time. However, systems without strong mechanisms of repression and conformity will evolve, innovate and change, creating new emergent structures, capabilities and characteristics. Systems with no individual freedom at their lower levels will have predictable behaviour in the short term – but will not survive in the long term. Creative, innovative, evolving systems, on the other hand, will more probably survive over longer times, but will not have predictable characteristics or behaviour. These minimal mechanisms are all that are required to explain (though not predict) the co-evolutionary processes occurring in markets, organizations, and indeed in emergent, evolutionary communities of practice.
