    From O'Shaughnessy to opportunity: Innovating Hepatology Trials in the UK

    Developing new treatments that improve outcomes for patients with decompensated cirrhosis remains an unmet area of clinical need. The UK has a rich history of being on the forefront of clinical trials for this patient group. However, there have been challenges in achieving this goal in the past decade, with several negative studies as well as trials struggling to achieve recruitment. This has been further exacerbated by the changed clinical landscape following the COVID-19 pandemic. In response to this, the O'Shaughnessy report was commissioned to identify potential opportunities to improve clinical trial performance in the UK. In this review article, we identify critical areas for the UK hepatology community to collaborate and develop sustainable partnerships for clinical trial delivery which will ensure that outcomes are representative, inclusive and patient-centred

    Computer-based technology and student engagement: a critical review of the literature

    Computer-based technology has infiltrated many aspects of life and industry, yet there is little understanding of how it can be used to promote student engagement, a concept receiving strong attention in higher education due to its association with a number of positive academic outcomes. The purpose of this article is to present a critical review of the literature from the past 5 years related to how web-conferencing software, blogs, wikis, social networking sites (Facebook and Twitter), and digital games influence student engagement. We prefaced the findings with a substantive overview of student engagement definitions and indicators, which revealed three types of engagement (behavioral, emotional, and cognitive) that informed how we classified articles. Our findings suggest that digital games provide the most far-reaching influence across different types of student engagement, followed by web-conferencing and Facebook. Findings regarding wikis, blogs, and Twitter are less conclusive and significantly limited in number of studies conducted within the past 5 years. Overall, the findings provide preliminary support that computer-based technology influences student engagement, however, additional research is needed to confirm and build on these findings. We conclude the article by providing a list of recommendations for practice, with the intent of increasing understanding of how computer-based technology may be purposefully implemented to achieve the greatest gains in student engagement. © 2017, The Author(s)

    Social media in undergraduate medical education: A systematic review.

    INTRODUCTION: There are over 3.81 billion worldwide active social media (SoMe) users. SoMe are ubiquitous in medical education, with roles across undergraduate programmes, including professionalism, blended learning, well being and mentoring. Previous systematic reviews took place before recent explosions in SoMe popularity and revealed a paucity of high-quality empirical studies assessing its effectiveness in medical education. This review aimed to synthesise evidence regarding SoMe interventions in undergraduate medical education, to identify features associated with positive and negative outcomes. METHODS: Authors searched 31 key terms through seven databases, in addition to references, citation and hand searching, between 16 June and 16 July 2020. Studies describing SoMe interventions and research on exposure to existing SoMe were included. Title, abstract and full paper screening were undertaken independently by two reviewers. Included papers were assessed for methodological quality using the Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument (MERSQI) and/or the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research (SRQR) instrument. Extracted data were synthesised using narrative synthesis. RESULTS: 112 studies from 26 countries met inclusion criteria. Methodological quality of included studies had not significantly improved since 2013. Engagement and satisfaction with SoMe platforms in medical education are described. Students felt SoMe flattened hierarchies and improved communication with educators. SoMe use was associated with improvement in objective knowledge assessment scores and self-reported clinical and professional performance, however evidence for long term knowledge retention was limited. SoMe use was occasionally linked to adverse impacts upon mental and physical health. Professionalism was heavily investigated and considered important, though generally negative correlations between SoMe use and medical professionalism may exist. CONCLUSIONS: Social media is enjoyable for students who may improve short term knowledge retention and can aid communication between learners and educators. However, higher-quality study is required to identify longer-term impact upon knowledge and skills, provide clarification on professionalism standards and protect against harms

    Unusual morphology of equimolar Ar–Kr alloys

    The transmission high electron energy diffraction (THEED) technique was employed for studying the structure of the equimolar Ar–Kr alloy, in which the thermodynamics predicts the maximum feasibility of phase separation. Deposition of preliminarily cooled gas mixtures was performed onto substrates cooled to 6 or 20 K. All diffraction patterns contained several sets of reflections against an appreciable background. Analysis of the data obtained during a warm-up from 6 to 33 K (at which the major part of argon was removed due to sublimation) as well as of the diffraction pattern from the “sandwich” (two successively deposited film of pure Ar and Kr) provided reliable arguments for the following conclusions. Actually, we have documented for the first time a phase separation of an Ar–Kr mixture, manifestations of which turned out to be oddly asymmetric as far as the behavior of the components involved is concerned. Upon deposition both onto 6 or 20 K the emerging sample contained two crystal phases of virtually pure argon with a small admixture of krypton. One of the Ar phases (fcc) did not cause a surprise, whereas the other was hcp with the a/c ratio close to the ideal value. The krypton component separated as a fine-grained glass-like state, possibly, with a low admixture of argon
